Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

The cover takes me back. As does the color spread of the chapter 598. You may have been reading One Piece for up to thirteen years when these come out, witnessed the originals right at the beginning - and here it's all brought back to you! The herald for the second half of the story!
There's a lot to like here (as always), but my highlight was Luffy's absolute wrecking of the pacifista that gave the entire crew so much trouble the last time. It was also nice to see them get some respect from the newcomers and scrubs: they're now considered global threats, menaces to society, public enemies. I have a hard time thinking up another story that does this sort of a thing as well as One Piece does, having characters grow in infamy as they do.
I must say to surprise with the end of Ace's death. Luffy begin his training with Rayleigh with so much hardship and suffer for the loss of his dearest brother.
After all, I loved their new appearance!!! 2 years half, there are so much difference, except Chopper. Cute as ever! Hahaha... New turning points for Straw Hat Pirate.

Its the time skip period when everyone receivves the message 3D2Y aka meet 2 years later and they have to get strong for this new age and we see everyone doing their things to become strong and its amazing to see whose doing what and particularly Luffy trying to master Haki and then the TIME SKIP of 2 years happens and everyone gathers at Grove 42 and what happens in between is fascinating and when the marines are involved and what Luffy does then to take down the opponents is fascinating and just shows the difference in their powers, Strawhats are together and next up: FISHMAN ISLAND SAGA! Epic start to an epic dawn of the new adventures of one piece! This was a treat to read!
I know this is post arc/pre arc, but i thought it was pretty weak. Previous "between arc" volumes have been really enjoyable. This one didn't do it for me. (The panel with Sanji's nosebleed when he sees Nami and Robin made me crack up though. 🤣) On to Fish-man Island! 🦈🧜🏻♀️🏝️

2025 reread : raising the rating to 5 stars because I am weak. I still love this cover. And seeing all the strawhats wanting to get stronger so they don't have to relie so much on Luffy is lovely (and in part why I am raising the rating). We also get some important worldbuilding by finally getting an explanation of how haki works after seeing it used but not names so many times in the series. I'm still not an instant fan of the new character designs, but it's so nice to have the strawhats finally reunited!! We also get to see Roger in the strawhat (for the first time?). But I think my favorite bit of this volume is seeing the people who sheltered the various strawhats for 2 years help them one last time to escape the marines and leave for fishmen island.
I love the cover call back to the first cover. I like how this is a clear transition between the first half of Grand Line and the second half even though I'm not the biggest fan of each of the new character designs (I'm just being grumpy don't listen to me). Anyway, it's good to see them finally reunited!
This volume has a problem with the formating of manga series. Volumes do not end with the arc but when the chapters fill the book. So this is half ending/preparing for training and the meeting of our beloved crew.
The time skip is done flawlessly, however, since this is my re-read it is kinda boring. The fake straw hats are meh and everything about them sux. What is amazing is the progress our heroes did. Design-wise it is a feast and their characters changed, though believably and their growth is visible at first sight.
There are spectacular and memorable moments - Luffy KOing the pacifista, Zoro cutting the ship, everyone meeting. But it's fine. This also marks the beginning for Fishman Island, which is not my favourite arc, but maybe I'll change my mind, once I continue!

The Strawhat crews reunite after a long 2 year period. Each obtaining unique power up of their own and new look too. Their journey towards Fishman island and New World starts from the place they got separated and reunited again. Personally I think the new Zoro looks more badass than before. And Luffy seems kinda mature than before.
One Piece, Vol. 61 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (595–603) of the on-going manga series.
This tankōbon concludes the interim story arc. Before being separated, the Straw Hat Pirates had planned to meet up after three days. However, Monkey D. Luffy's message amends that to two years through the attack on Marine Headquarters. Although they wish to reunite with Luffy and comfort him about his brother, Portgas D. Ace's, death, they instead take advantage of the opportune locales that Bartholomew Kuma sent them all to improve their skills – Luffy himself trains with Silvers Rayleigh.
Two years later, the Straw Hats gather on the archipelago where they were last together. A similar Marine force that caused them difficulties years ago tries to detain them, but because of their growth they easily flee. Together again, they resume their adventure by setting sail for Fishman Island, an underwater island.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part it is written and constructed rather well. Two years have passed since the crew was separated and the Straw Hats have trained vigorously since then. They are now set to reunite and pick up from where they left off on their journey.
All in all, One Piece, Vol. 61 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.
Un volumen un poco de relleno y comeback en el que todos los personajes sufren un glow up salvo los femeninos que únicamente se las sexualiza (si todavía fuera posible) aún más.
Here we are at the 61st Volume of One Piece, and apparently we’re only halfway there! Looking back when I first started reading One Piece as a kid I don’t think I could have realized how expansive the story of a rubber boy who wants to be King of the Pirates would become. Reading One Piece now as an adult definitely can feel overwhelming (especially as others have seemingly done a better job with keeping up with it). Despite being a bit overly complicated and now filled with supporting(?) characters I don’t care for (I truly don’t care for most of the Super Rookie captains), this is still One Piece, a wild and wacky pirate adventure story that brings back good memories of childhood and provides thrilling peaks for what’s ahead for the Straw Hats
Highlights: - “Romance Dawn” has always been a weird phrase but I love it and I’m glad Oda Sensei brought it back to launch the second half of Luffy’s journey. - Personally I feel like the end of Part 1 should have been at the end of the last volume (and would have had not included all that content about the Super Rookies and just focused on the Straw Hats agreeing to wait 2 years before reuniting). Still I did like how Oda broke up this volume by showing his concept art of the Straw Hat’s appearances post Time Skip. - Won’t lie some of the redesigned Straw Hat appearances will take some getting used to. Luffy, Zoro and Sanji all look like I expected and Nami and Robin are fine (very fine if you know what I mean) but the more “elaborate” Straw Hats’ redesigns are either a bit much (Chopper being more Pokemon-esque) or a LOT much (Franky). - Still got a smile on my face watching the Straw Hats reunite at the Sunny :) - The fake Straw Hat Crew was honestly a funny subplot and I’m curious if we’ll see them again soon. - Loved seeing the Straw Hats take down rival pirates, Marines and the Kuma robots. Knowing shonen stories like this though it won’t be enough for future enemies and more training will be necessary but I guess watching the characters train to become even more OP is part of the fun.
@ torino kingdom: chopper can study the medicine and learn from medicine makers @ kamabakka kingdom: sanji will learn the cuisines from the newkama kenpo instructors. @ island of weatheria: nami will be taught about the weather of the new world. @ tena gena kingdom: brook shall be singing @ bridge in east blue: robin is brought to dragon. @ karakuri island: franky will hone his skills in inventions and gadgets. @ boin archipelago: usopp will learn under heracle to be stronger while using plants. @ ruins of the shikkearu kingdom: zoro is taught by mihawk about the way of the sword
while skipping to the different straw hat members, they always thought about the moments luffy brought them into the crew. without hesitation, without fear. now, they have the will and the drive to become stronger.
luffy's photo showed a tattoo with “3D” crossed out beside “2Y”. they're gonna be meeting two years later. jimbei will meet luffy at fishman island in 2 years' time. meanwhile, luffy will be receiving lessons from rayleigh to train different types of haki.
two years later, straw hat crew is recruiting people???? FALSE NEWS.
REUNITED!! all their friends are helping them escape the marines
I’m so impressed by the quality of this time skip. The putting down and picking up of Luffy’s hat had me misty-eyed, and I was so happy to see the crew after so many chapters, and a whopping two years for them!

"Maybe there's no such thing as a coincidence in the world. Maybe everything that happens is inevitable. Destiny just goes on in its plodding way. And yesterday, Luffy... has grown into a man... even more worthy of that! It might not be a bad thing... to live just a little longer."
Coming off a huge turning point, this volume feels intentionally calm, and that calm sometimes drags. A new arc is clearly being set up, but the slower pace and scattered structure made parts of it feel less engaging than expected. Much of the book is about reintroducing the crew and reminding the reader who they are now, which is important, but it can also feel like a long pause before the story really moves again. There’s no central conflict driving things forward, and if you’re eager for momentum, this volume can feel like it’s holding back. I found myself appreciating what it was doing more than actively enjoying every chapter.
The strongest part here is the character work. Nearly every major character gets a moment to quietly show how they’ve changed, and the changes feel earned rather than flashy. Growth shows up in confidence, restraint, and clearer purpose instead of dramatic speeches. Some arcs land better than others. A few characters come across as more focused and self aware, while others lean hard into familiar jokes that may or may not still work for you. For me, those recurring gags sometimes undercut the emotional weight and made sections feel repetitive. Still, the sense of loyalty and shared direction across the cast is clear, and the reunions feel grounded instead of sentimental.
World-building carries a lot of the volume. New locations, new rules, and a stronger sense of danger beyond the immediate story all help reframe the series moving forward. The writing balances humor with seriousness, sometimes awkwardly, sometimes very effectively. This isn’t a volume that tries to impress with big moments. It’s more about resetting the board and showing readiness for what’s next. As a transition, it works.
Volume 61: Chapter 595-603 Saga 6: Summit War Saga 7: Fishman Island Arc 23: Post-War Arc 24: Return to Sabaody Arc 25: Fishman Island
A message from Luffy reached his crews. They will meet again at Sabaody Archipelago after 2 years. In these 2 years, they will train to become more stronger. Luffy and Rayleigh trained at Ruskaina Island.
Three types of Haki were introduced: - Observation Haki (Kenbushoku no Haki) - Armament Haki (Busoshoku no Haki) - Conqueror's Haki (Haoshoku no Haki)
After 2 years, all the Straw Hat Pirates were back to the Sabaody Archipelago. In the period of Straw Hat Pirates' hiatus, there were a group of nifty crooks who disguised as the Straw Hat Pirates. They started gathering another crews including the new rookies, Caribou and Coribou.
Marine have mobilized their squad including Sentoumaru and two Pacifistas to capture Straw Hat Pirates. Luffy, Zoro and Sanji easily defeat the Pacifistas.
During the past 2 years, Duval and Hachi are responsible for guarding the Thousand Sunny. Bartholomew Kuma also guards the ship as his last mission. Basically, Kuma is a good person and a savior of the Straw Hat Pirates.
POST WAR ARC - FINAL PART 1. i can't wait for luffy to heal with his crew mates. i cannot wait to see how they all grow stronger and better, especially seeing how they've all landed where they needed to.
RETURN TO SABAODY ARC 1. i love each of their transformation/change in appearance: nami's long hair and her new technology, brook having become a whole ass superstar LOL (his songs actually are good), sanji changing eyebrows?? and growing a beard (love), usopp's power up!!!!! AND HIS HAIRRRRRRRR I LOVE IT he looks so cool!!!, robin looks incredibly good - that hair is amazing; CHOPPER'S HAT IS SO HECKING CUTE, he is so cute in mistaking his real friends with those dumbos; frankyy got even more powered up AND HE CUT HIS HAIR!; and zoro omfg - HUNK OF A MAN WITH A SCAR ON HIS EYE (he looks so badass)
2. does weatheria have a magnetic field? so the logpose kept pointing to fishman island?
3. i am beyond excited for the new arcs to come! they have made many friends together on different islands, and they've all come together to help them out. power of friendship!!!
Best Saga, Best Arcs, Best everything. Really curious on how the Time-Skip is handled narratively, though. Such things are pretty easy to mess up a little, but we'll see.
Arc ranking so far:
1. Marineford 2. Enies Lobby 3. Sabaody Archipelago 4. Long Ring Long Land 5. Post-Enies Lobby 6. Water 7 7. Skypiea 8. Alabasta 9. Post-War 10. Reverse Mountain 11. Amazon Lily 12. Impel Down 13.
This was a little bit of an awkward transition with the time skip in the middle. It was nice to see what everyone was planning to do during the time skip. It was fun to see their reunion. There was a fun little story with this reunion. It was also nice to understand more of Kuma. Though I still feel the beginning after the time skip is a little rough. I'm excited to get through this and really get this back half going!
As much as it saddens me that the Strawhats were separated for so long, I LOVE that they spent that time training and learning new skills! I knew the islands they were sent to had to have a purpose! It was too perfect! Poor Sanji seems to have suffered the most though 😅
Their reunion was so sweet 🥹 I love how much they care for each other
