Clementine's Awakening

Rate this book
Death is rarely the end in Savannah. Sometimes it’s only the beginning.

Clementine is ready to live her best life, starting with a new job at O’Hara’s Pub. But working as a server isn’t easy for a lifelong wallflower. She encounters a sympathetic ally in Rosemary, but there’s a problem: Rosemary’s a ghost, a former slave trapped for eternity in the pub.

The girls form an unlikely friendship. Clementine offers compassion to the lonely ghost, who defends her by playing harmless pranks on rude customers and cruel co-workers. Their activities soon attract another spirit—Deadeye Abernathy, the madman who murdered Rosemary 150 years ago.

Deadeye joins the fun, turning the pranks into gruesome attacks. Clementine must find a way to stop him before he destroys her friends and the new life she loves. But how can a human survive a battle between two ghosts in the Most Haunted City in America?

Great, engaging read. Soucy writes characters (loved both Clem and Rosemary) and atmosphere (I've never actually been to Georgia but after reading this feel like I can say I have) as good as anyone. This was my first work of hers to read but definitely won't be my last. She has joined my list of must-read authors.

CLEMENTINE'S AWAKENING is the first book I have read by author Jennifer Soucy. Taking place in the South, where ghost tours are very popular, a young woman--Clementine--gets her first job as a waitress. Her alcoholic/addicted mother is a force that she physically needs to break away from in order to start her own life.

". . . I could be whoever I wanted-even myself--if I dared . . . "

Clementine is a character I immediately bonded to. Her past had ben troubled, abusive, and she'd had no true friends--yet her outlook that she would make a better life by herself made me want her to succeed so badly.

She does make some friends--and enemies--on her new journey. The most noticeable is the ghost of a former slave, named Rosemary, who plays innocent pranks on those who aren't pleasant to Clem.

"Even today, people still found a way to demean and devalue others . . . "

When things take a more violent turn, they realize that the ghost of Rosemary's murderer has found them and decided to "play".

His pranks are intended to be much more deadly . . .

". . . Monsters like to hide in the dark, waiting until you almost forget . . ."

This was a wonderful story that had so many great elements to it: friendship, independence, emotional growth, and even love. The writing style was fluid, and easy to "get into". I'm looking forward to reading more by this author in the future.

Recommended.

Clementine's Awakening is the heart breaking story of Clementine. Her mother is a drunk and has never done a thing for her in her life. As soon as Clem (as her friends call her) graduates high school, her mother tells her to get a job or get out. Clem does not want to end up like her mom and is determined to make a better life for herself. Refusing a job at the strip club with her mother, she lands a waitress job at O'Hara's. It's located in the down town historic part of Savannah. And it is haunted. Clem is the only one that can see the ghost and the only one that can talk to her. While learning about Rosemary (the ghost) the pair attracts something else, something much darker.
This book!! It's set in Savannah, Georgia. I have been lucky enough to visit the city and let me tell you! It really is THAT gorgeous. So for me, the setting works. I love every scene. Clem is a great character. She is determined and strong (stronger than she realizes). You really want her to rise above her white trash up bringing. She forms great friendships with her coworkers at O'Hara's, it all feels real. The writing is smooth and flows easily. I finished this book in 3 sittings and for me that is fast. You get pulled in and don't want to put it down. I really enjoyed this book. I can't wait to see what Jennifer Soucy comes out with next!

If I could think of anything to relate this book to it would be true blood but in Savannah,GA with ghosts instead of vampires. Sounds interesting, right?

Clementine is trying to open her wings and get out from under her drug addicted mother by starting her first job as a waitress. She didn’t realize it would be so uplifting and haunting all at the same time.

I really loved how easy Soucy’s writing is. It is truly like drinking a cool glass of ice tea on a warm summer's day. This story is atmospheric in how it brings in the Savannah history and architecture of the buildings. It makes me want to visit there someday. Soucy can even get a little saucy in her writing which I very much enjoyed. She is one I’m adding to my list of authors who knows how to build that sexual tension. I was even surprised by the connections built with unlikable characters. I really appreciated how the author included diverse and LGBTQ characters. The only downside for me while well intentioned, I didn’t feel it had the proper perspective for the black character in the story. So I gave this book 4 ⭐️.

With me being a white reviewer, I really feel like this book needs a Black reviewer's perspective. If you have a reviewer in mind for this please tag them below. I’d love to send this copy to them.

Thank you to silver shamrock press for sending me this copy for an honest review.

CLEMENTINE'S AWAKENING tells the tale of Clem, a 19 yo surviving the trauma of addict parenting. She befriends a ghost in her new workplace and things take an interesting turn.

The style is simple, easy to chew through. There wasn't a lot of thought-provoking going on. This is something that I have noticed with most SSP books and I wonder if it is a product of the editing? Entertaining, but not much else.

I will say this story makes me want to visit Savannah, the most haunted city in America.

Thank you Silver Shamrock Publishing for gifting me a copy of CLEMENTINE'S AWAKENING in exchange for an honest review.

Happy Women in Horror Month, people. Still looking for something to add to that lady-led TBR pile for the rest of February? Look no further. Clementine’s Awakening is the latest release from Silver Shamrock, toted as southern gothic horror. While it doesn’t fit perfectly into the subgenre, Soucy keeps the slow-burn elements until she doesn’t. She also displays an essence of quiet horror, until she gets loud.

It’s a truly enjoyable book from start to finish that had me playing the “just one more chapter” game until I ran out of story. There’s a lot on display that works here, as well as a thing or two that doesn’t, but the extent of the success can be boiled down to one word. Clementine. It is her story after all, so shouldn’t the lead be relatable, loveable, and make you enjoy the time you spend in their world? Well, yeah, and Soucy nails every element here. Clementine is thrust into strong environments here. For one, a new restaurant job that reeks of authenticity. Seriously, if you’ve ever worked in food service before, Soucy captures the tension, anxiety, and busyness perfectly. She also captures the disappearing into the basement so people will leave you alone for two seconds perfectly. This is where she meets Rosemary, the ghost of a slave who’s mystery acts to catalyze the rest of the story.

It would’ve been all too easy to lose track of who Clementine is, losing her in the bustling restaurant setting or even the backdrop of Savannah, Georgia which Soucy skillfully brings to life, making the reader feel like they’ve been there. Like they know it’s ins, outs, and secrets. Instead, Soucy grounds the character through the relationship with her mother, something that hit home for me, knowing someone who has been through the same struggles, and through her blossoming friendship with Lula, my favorite character in the story.

My one issue with the story is Henry, Clementine’s love interest. We spend a lot of time developing this character, and as a reader I will rarely, if ever, complain about taking time for character development, but it ultimately feels like we don’t get very far. We know he’s a big guy, a talented musician, and would do anything for Clementine, but in a story where the other characters are so rich, his lack of flaws and problems stand out.

Making him stand apart from Clementine could have caused events toward the end of the book to carry more weight, though this is a small gripe, because the events pull off shock and surprise in spades. This could certainly be attributed to the villain of the piece, Thomas Abernathy. He is creepy as anything, and although we get backstory, there’s enough mystery left over to keep the reader properly looking over their shoulder, as up north as they may be.

Clementine’s Awakening is the first thing I’ve read by Jennifer Soucy, but it sure as hell won’t be the last. An engaging story that brings not only a cast of characters to life on the page, but an entire city. The author should be commended for weaving a magic throughout the narrative that brings the reader in and doesn’t let them leave until every last thread has been unraveled. I can see the endings causing some rifts, but I enjoyed it.

I received a copy from the publisher for review consideration.

This all starts with an experience. An experience of living the life of working in a restaurant. Some of us take food service workers for granted. Some don’t think twice about how hard they work or how little pay waitresses and bartenders make if it wasn’t for tips. Some are not even aware of the tug-of-war battle between the kitchen and those running food and slinging drinks to thirsty customers. Soucy demonstrates the experience as brilliantly as one could. As intricate as only an experienced worker in that business could. The very first day Clementine works at O’Hara’s is anxiety inducing. Balancing plates on both arms like it’s some kind of performative act, while trying to please multiple customers and not appear distressed. Then you add the layer of inappropriate behavior from a fellow staffer, layered with more inappropriate behavior from some idiot young man. But have no fear, Rosemary (the friendly ghost) is here!

Layer after layer of experiences of the restaurant life, of the life of a loner, with the series of finding and becoming best friends with Lula. These all stack and Clementine hits the top. Henry. Her piano man. The man she never knew she’d get. And Henry’s feels the same love for Clementine–his southern belle. Life would be pretty awesome with all her new friends and boyfriend, right? That would be a fairy tale. This is horror, and Soucy knows exactly how and when to turn it up to eleven. With bursts of gut-wrenching and fast-paced explosions blood, terror, and confusion, typically caused by the bad man (the not so friendly ghost), Soucy proves that she’s a force not to be reckoned with. I really enjoyed how Clementine adapted to all the different challenges. She’s the every girl. The every guy. She’s you, me, us. Her insecurities are ours. Her fears are everyone’s.

Soucy walked a fine line between romance and supernatural horror at times. I loved it. It felt like a good ol’ love story, but I know it isn’t. I had an idea how everything ends. And then I read the ending. It wasn’t anything like what I thought it would be. It was so much better.

An excellent tale which I feel sits well in the YA genre. A very 'sunny' horror, the rebuilding of the life of the main character is what drives this on - it gets the reader really rooting for Clementine.
I think it's probably also the first book where I've come to care about about a ghost. The ending did pull the carpet out from under me. Very much a Romeo and Juliet tale Savannah style. Some great dark touches, and yes, a really enjoyable read. I could say a lot more and there would be spoilers!

I thoroughly enjoyed Clementine's Awakening. Jennifer Soucy's writing style flows and the pages practically flip themselves. She also has a restaurant background (as do I), so re-living the restaurant setting really brought me back. I look forward to reading more of her work!

I want to thank the publisher and author for the chance to review this book.

First, the voice is capable and inviting as our protagonist Clementine (Clem) escapes a horrible family, drug addicted mother, sexual abuse, poverty and lack of self esteem to gain employment at a Savannah, GA pub/restaurant knee deep in ghost country central. Her life appears to make an upswing. Most of the story deals with Clem’s life and interaction with the staff.. some friends and some foe. She eventually gets contact with a murdered slave girl ghost in the cellar of the bar who needs her friendship and her help. This contact not only complicates Clem’s life but unleashes the ghost girls murderer. We see Clem find love and horror as her life begins to unravel again along with her inexplicable desire to see this “horror through” to the end. Her loyalty will be her worst mistake.

No spoilers as I’ve might have already stepped over the line.

Though I do think there is too much character development until the final bloody chapters. I enjoy the introduction of the evil presence that’s creating havoc in these people lives. I love that author following the usual structure of these types of stories and then make the twist ending a “What the hell?” moment.

On the edge of a YA novel and a fantastic introduction to those who haven’t dipped a toe into horror stories before. I love the strong female voices. The male stereotypes here were a bit hard to ignore however.

Final words, I hope this author continues to find her voice, an author to watch. Enjoy!

Savannah. Ghosts. Atmosphere, setting, characters, romance - y'all, this story has it all. Soucy has a gift for pulling a reader into her story and immediately orienting them in place and time - I felt Savannah in every line, and I felt for Clem and Rosemary as the story progressed. No spoilers here, but just know that this book hits all the highlights, and keeps its promises, just like Savannah. Looking forward to more from this author!

Overview: In Savannah, ghosts are to be expected. There are tours around the hottest haunted spots for just this reason. Clementine comes from a wretched home ruled by her drug addict mother. She’s finally out of the house and working her first job, as a waitress at O’Hara’s Pub. In no time, she encounters the ghost of a young slave girl in the restaurant's basement. They become friends. The ghost - named Rosemary - begins defending Clementine’s honor but pulling pranks on the people that terrorize her around work. When things become more violent, it is revealed that Rosemary’s murderer has returned to O’Hara’s to cause trouble. Not only are people getting severely injured or killed, this Deadeye pirate has his interests pinned on Clementine ...

The Good: Soucy is a fine writer. She knows drama and classic love tropes. She even reveals an ability to go dark and vicious, however briefly.

The Bad: For me, this was a romance novel. It was corny a lot of the time; I rolled my eyes pretty frequently. To put it simply, this wasn’t the kind of story I seek. It has a lot of mushy love scenes and friendship highlights. It wasn’t until the end that things got dark enough to get my attention. Unfortunately, the finale wasn’t enough to make up for the journey.

The Takeaway: If you like a familiar love story where the girl lacking confidence wins the hunk everyone swoons for, then this is a novel you’d probably enjoy. It feels a bit YA - despite the occasional “fuck” and death scene - but does spice things up with a little haunting on the side. Soucy has a good voice, even if it isn’t the kind of voice I’m drawn to reading. I just would have preferred less mush and more conflict. The mother could have easily made this a domestic drama of gritty proportions, but her involvement in the story was never pushed far enough.

Poor Clementine! Her mother was probably a bigger more terrifying monster than the actual ghost. At first this book flowed easily for me and I really enjoyed watching Clementine’s transformation from scared, dependent, abused little girl; to strong, independent woman. I loved the characters of Lula and Florence. Lula being Clem’s first real friend and Florence almost a surrogate mother figure.

I also truly loved all of the history about Savannah. My favorite book of all time is Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The references to the Mercer house brought me pure delight.

I was not as sure about Henry and the relationship that developed between him and Clem. It didn’t seem to have the chemistry or closeness that the other characters had with her. Although there were a-lot of sections of the book dedicated to their relationship, I’d have much rather seen Clem become the strong woman on her own.

I would have loved a bit more horror and less romance, but that’s the style of book I enjoy. If you’re a reader who loves a good ghost story, some historical elements and a love story this is for you!!

Clementine is nineteen and ready to take care of herself. She has a new job as a server at O’Hara’s pub and a plan to get away from her alcoholic, addicted mom so she can finally have a normal life. When Clementine makes friends at the pub, her escape plan turns into a reality. There’s just one thing standing between her and normalcy - one of those friends is a ghost. Can their friendship span the chasm of death, or will their connection call a cold-blooded killer back from the grave?

If you enjoy memorable characters, dark twists, and polished writing, this romantic horror is for you. Soucy has a way with crafting main characters with just the right amount of damage. Clementine’s sordid backstory reeled me in. Her hard work, perseverance, and innocence in spite of her blighted circumstances makes her a character to cheer for. The lush backdrop of Savannah, the touch of history, and the beautiful romance coils around this enthralling haunting, lulling the reader into a false sense of security. This chilling read was a thrill ride I didn’t want to end.

This book was so much fun! Joining Clementine on her journey into adulthood was great. Seeing her tackle her first job as a waitress, making friends, finding love, and all in the great city of Savannah what more could we ask for. This also is a ghost story that is quite clever. This book is unique because it takes place in a restaurant and it gives you a sense of what it might be like working there. I have never read a story that took place mainly in a restaurant so that was a lot of fun. Definitely worth picking up if you are looking for something with a southern atmosphere, romance, creepy ghosts, and a girl coming into her own adulthood. Will be definitely reading more of Soucy's books.

A sweet, easy read.

This novel was ‘easy’ to read in the sense that It flowed well. The character were easy and likable, but perhaps a little too saccharine or melodramatic villain for my taste. Nice writing and you can tell Soucy has the waitress and Savannah experience, it was like taking a trip there!

A gothic ghost story set in modern Savannah! Great story, multi dimensional characters, and one helluva gut punch. Soucy also excels at creating atmosphere!
