Pembroke Black's life hasn't been easy. As a child she put up with a father who was only looking out for himself. When her mother died she moved in with her grandparents and her father couldn't have cared less. As soon as she was old enough she left to join the Army and was a surgeon who was so good she was able to walk a soldier through surgery on herself.
But now she's out of the service and depression is getting the better of Pem. She sees her doctors weekly and takes her medicine, but it still doesn't help. Not even the many attempts to take her own life have worked to relieve Pem of her depression. However, news has reached her that her grandfather has died, so she's going back to her hometown to take care of her grandmother and deal with the will.
Theo Manning has been helping "grandma" since her husband passed away. Even before Harold died he would go to their house just to talk and help the old man out. Theo knows a bit about Pem's family and how her father would do anything including hurt his mother for a bit of cash. So he's made sure to keep an eye on the house and grandma. But his protection extends to Pem when he meets her and discovers she's his mate. Things won't be easy though because Pem does not have much of a joyful outlook on life right now and doesn't wish to saddle a mate with someone like her.
This book breaks my heart and really tugs at my heartstrings. As a military spouse I've experienced living with someone who suffered a bit from PTSD. It's not easy and I can only imagine the pain Pem felt dealing with her nightmares. Then to have everything heaped on her with her family issues it all just makes you feel terrible, but yet excited when she starts to see the joyful side of life with a mate.
I'm very excited for Milo's book and to see how him and his woman work out.

Loved Theo and Pem
Major Pembroke Black, has retired from the army and is home to help her grandma. She meets the Manning brothers who have been keeping an eye on her grandma since her grandpa died.
Theo has found his mate in his friend MaryBeth's granddaughter. Pem is not to happy about having a dragon mate. Theo is patient and doesn't push. Her father and uncle and his family are causing trouble. Pem and Marybeth need the Manning family's help. Marrying Theo will go a long way in keeping them safe.
Loved Theo and Pem's story. A nice set up for Milo's story.

Love this next generation of Manning dragons! I received this book as an ARC and I purchased it too! I got this book today and I just finished it. As with all of Ms. Barton's books, it's awesome.

Theo Manning has been helping 'grandma' since her husband had passed. Of course, any of the Mannings were more than glad to step up, especially if it meant keeping her safe. Pembrook's, aka Pem, dad and his brother were despicable, disrespectful sons who continually stole from their parents and often got physical with both women. When Pem came home for the reading of the will she also comes face to face with Theo who happens to be her mate. I love Kathi S. Barton's book. They always flow so easily, the world-building is phenomenal to read with characters that are always so flawed they're relatable. Not only that, they're always strong characters with equally strong mates. I can't wait for Milo's story next
