Holiday Cottage #4

Gingerbread Cottage

Rate this book
The Holiday Cottages are magical places, where those who come to Sprucewood, Colorado, to “get away” find themselves and their hopes renewed, relationships kindled, and dreams coming true.

Carrie Highsmith’s career is threatened when her boss insists she secure a contract between a toy manufacturing company and an elderly couple before the end of December, or else. She can succeed and become a partner or fail and file for unemployment. Carrie rushes to Colorado, where the land is located, and rents the Gingerbread Cottage to serve as her base while she negotiates the deal. Her mission, however, faces a handsome obstacle, Matt Wilder, a Sprucewood lawyer.

Matt, who represents the local landowners, stays one-step ahead of Carrie in her attempts to seal the agreement. After living in Chicago for several years, Matt gives up his successful life and returns to the place and people he loves and who love him. He’s protective of the couple who own the land in question and intends to make certain no outsider takes advantage of them.

Who will win the battle of wills, the small-town lawyer or the driven career woman?

Growing up in White Deer, Texas a small town that boasts one blinking light, Linda Baten Johnson won blue ribbons for storytelling, and the dream of making up tales to entertain was born. As an adult, Linda spent many hours packing and unpacking as she and her husband George have lived in 15 different places in the United States and enjoyed a three-year assignment in England. In between moves, Linda earned her Master of Arts degree in English and history, worked as a Realtor, a teacher, and logged many volunteer hours.

One volunteer assignments was a National Park lighthouse in Michigan where she and her husband lived in the assistant keeper’s cottage. That posting inspired Mystery of Desolation Point, and she used historical records as the basis for the middle grade novel. Linda loves research and all books include an historical element. In her Young Texans Series, she focuses on specific Texas topics such as the Galveston Hurricane, the original 300 settlers, and Juneteenth. She currently writes squeaky-clean romance novellas and cozy mysteries.

Linda loves traveling and collecting experiences and stories. Some of her favorite memories include parasailing, white water rafting, and being mistaken for a tour guide in Mexico and in Russia. Her children and grandchildren tease her about never going anywhere without orchestrating an educational experience.

She loves gathering with family and friends and opening her home at Thanksgiving for a celebration of the many blessings we enjoy.

Christmas Magic

Gingerbread Cottage is a book, that will leave you feeling happy. Each book that I have read in the series, makes me want to read the next book about the holiday cottages. This time we are back in Sprucewood for a potential sale of property and possible new company locating in town. When Carrie is sent to close the deal, she is immediately drawn into the holiday themed cottages and the town. The attraction to the attorney, Matt and the family that own the property, brings out the Christmas joy that she has missed. There is magic in the air and Carrie wants it to bring her home.

The Gingerbread Cottage is a charming story about Carrie Highsmith, a spirited young woman who rents one of the Holiday Cottages in Sprucewood, Colorado. She plans to quickly close a deal for her boss and return to the big city. As she meets the town folk, including the handsome Matt Wilder, her attitude changes, and she begins to enjoy her stay in this slow-paced town. Not only will you savor this delightful romantic tale, but the author Linda Baten Johnson includes two delicious recipes; one for gingerbread and one for gingerbread cookies. Find a comfy chair, have a cup of tea and enjoy!

Linda is a friend of mine, and I've read some of her other books. She usually writes historical stories, but this is the first romance book of hers that I've read. The book was very good, as well as her other books.

It is good to return to Sprucewood, Colorado and the Holiday Cottages. This series could be read in any order but I just personally like to read them in order and preferably one right after the other. Not always possible but just a preference. Sprucewood was the perfect place for Carrie to have time to figure out if a partnership in her real estate firm is what she really wants or is small town attorney, Matt, a much better choice. Let’s face it we know the choice she’ll make but the path to that decision is interesting and will keep you reading to the end.
