THE REVIEW FOR THE BOOK: CRIMSON COVENANT.

GENRE:PARANORMAL ROMANCE...
AUTHOR:Samantha Whiskey
TYPE:STANDALONE.
POV: FIRST PERSON, DUAL POV.
MY RATING: 5 "BLOODY HELL" STARS.

Alek is the king of all Vampires and a member of the onyx assassin whose job is to serve justice. LIving for centuries on and on gets dull but when one night, his sister is attacked in the woods, he met with the love of his life...his mate...his queen.

Lyric is living a normal, mundane life when one night shook her world and now she is in a fantasy where reality seems out of reach...mated to the Vampire..not a simple one but a king is more difficult than its sounds. And when someone is trying to ruin the peace between the species...the Covenant will strike back harder...What if this young love is destroyed in the midst of this politics and danger?

I’d fallen into a dark fairytale in the span of a few days. And why did it feel so… natural? So easy to fall into this midnight story complete with feeders and servants and immortal creatures so beautiful it was as if the stars themselves had created them?

I love the paranormal genre...Just a few months ago, I would never have taken a liking to this genre but giving it a chance and finding some amazing books such as this one made me a die-hard fan of this genre.

Alek and Lyric...god, I adored this couple...they had such an action-packed life together...Mating to each other was not their choice but fate's and they were so darn perfect for each other. Like -one starts and the other complete -perfect...and the world-building was mind-blowing...secondary characters were so lively.

The thrill at the end was so absorbing that once you start this book you will leave it at the end.

This was such a random pick and I'm so happy I found it! Crimson Covenant is the first book in a new paranormal romance series by Samantha Whiskey and I'm hooked. This was also my first book by this author and I really liked her writing style. I honestly didn't know what to expect when I started this book but I was pleasantly surprised, I finished the book in one sitting.

Crimson Covenant is a mix between A Discovery of Witches and BDB. I really enjoyed the story and the characters, even the overall arc of the series is interesting and makes me want to read more. It was a fast read but it didn't bother me, it didn't feel rushed or sloppy, the author still took the time to develop Alek and Lyric's relationship in a way that was satisfying and made me connect with both.

I'm honestly super excited to have found this series and to read the other books.

The plot idea and the blurb sounded interesting. The first 25% of the book were on ok read.

The story went downhill after that. Their thoughts only revolved around each other and not much else.
The looks, the power they radiated, the pull, the jealousy, the utter obsessiveness, the library full of books, feeding...
All playing in a tiny little bubble that was bloody boring, with the plot taking a backseat.
It made the female lead look like a single minded and at times hysterical idiot. Running around doing nothing besides thinking about a boy like a teenager.
Does he like me? Why does he reject me? Am I not pretty enough? Why does he ignore me? What he wants to marry me, no way! Why does he not think about me? Does he have other women?
So so tiresome.
It felt like the author could only focus on a few themes at once. Missing the overall concept of what life entails completely. Which kept me wondering what the purpose of this story was? The bad world building and the lack of proper descriptions made it hard for me to even imagine the story and the scenes in my mind while reading. That is also why a good world building and a concept is needed which I searched here needlessly.

I didn’t like the stereotypical behaviour the characters presented. For example the kings sister.
Why was the princess such a cliché? Why didn’t they teach her self Defense and some warrior training, she is such a rare treasure after all? Wouldn’t it not have been the logical measure? She acted like a damsel in distress, which was annoying for an immortal a couple of hundred years old, being the sister of the king, a king that leads a group of assassins. She had nothing to do all day long, no purpose at all. Besides looking good, playing the side kick when it was necessary for the plot because the main leads needed to talk about and sort through their feelings. This is sloppy work in my book.

The writing needed an editor.
The characters were jumbled and not properly distinct. She named the servant class talem, to that point she had no knowledge about that. Only he did.
Small mistakes throughout the book kept on piling up, like that she opened and closed her lips. I shouldn’t need to point out that this is anatomically not possible.

The descriptions of her tasting like cinnamon and vanilla, I have never kissed someone tasting like that unless there was a bubble gum involved.
And come on, when I see some guy on the streets in leather pants, it would definely not get my panties wet, to the contrary, what an odd fashion style would come to mind and nothing else.

The characters were poorly build. They had all the right answers and acted as our moral code would expect or the plot would, like for example that she doesn’t care about his power, prestige and wealth... but to be honest, in that moment when she said that, I asked myself, why not? There is no characterisation or trait that would indicate she does or doesn’t, the author just tells us. And therefore the character doesn’t stand on its own, it is bendable in all directions the author or the plot wants them to.
That is supported by the many things that were out of control for the characters, how they act and react because of the mating bond.
That all added up to make me not care at all for any of the leads because they did not have a real character I could relate to.

The plot idea was good but not implemented properly, the plot was tiny and only in the background while they ran around playing romantically cat and mouse.
I am too old for that poo.
I gave up around 50%

I don't usually read paranormal romances, but when I saw that Samantha was writing one (and since she's one of my all time favorite authors) I jumped on it as quickly as could, and it did not disappoint!!

Alek is the king of all vampires, and the power he exudes just leaps off the page! On the night his sister is set to return, she is attacked by a demon, and on his way to save her, he comes across a human who can plainly see the demons face. Alek immediately has an overwhelming attraction to this beautiful woman, and she's all he can think about. When she becomes in danger herself, he saves her life and takes her home with him, where she is immediately immersed in an entirely new world.

I loved Lyric so freaking much!! She's so strong, and even though she's had her entire life flipped upside down, she is absolutely captivated by everything Alek is. He's extraordinarily beautiful, strong, powerful, kind and ruthless all at the same time. They develop a strong emotional bond very quickly, and their relationship and chemistry continues to grow as the book goes on. With danger seemingly lurking around every corner, as well as a very personal danger regarding Lyric, I couldn't read fast enough!! I needed to know right away what was going to happen to all of these characters that I adore, yet I wanted to savor it all at the same time. The heat factor is definitely ramped up, but the emotional connection these two share was just so beautiful!! The tease at the end for the second book in the series was absolutely amazing as well, and I can't wait for more!! I can't recommend this new series enough!!

**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions!**

The typical virgin meets alpha vampire novel...nothing much which separates it from many other books in this genre. I liked it but not my favorite in the world. I wish there had been more background development on Lyric especially. I am more excited about Lachlan's and Valor's story though!

It’s actually a 4.75 but Goodreads still isn’t in the 21st century and I can’t give an accurate score so here we are 🤷🏽‍♀️

I didn’t want to read this. Had no interest in supernatural sexy romances. But a friend insisted and Jeez-Us. Vampires are hot. This is Twilight on crack and it’s addictive as hell.

Long story short. Lyric is a human. Alek is a vampire. Well he’s not just a vampire he’s King of the Vampires and head of a very important Conclave. He has a band of brothers, The Onyx Assassins and every single one of them is drop your panties in the street HOTT. There’s Lachlan, who’s Scottish and intense and second in command. Then there’s Benedict who I want more of because there wasn’t enough of him in this book. Then there’s Ransom who has a sense of humour as well as being hot, a winning combo of ever there was one, and he may be a favourite as the books progress. BUT .. then there’s Hawthorne and fudge me sideways is he the one I’m waiting for. Broody and moody and as Lyric states in the book - easily the best looking of the bunch. I want him. I want him. I WANT HIM.

It’s not just about the men in Thai book, oh no. The women are just as tough and kick ass, there’s Lyric, the h of this particular story who is no pushover. Valour her best friend who I think is going to be so much fun. Then there’s Avianna who I already am hoping and praying Is Hawthorne’s mate because their chemistry is off the chart. And last but not least Olivia who I want to get to know so badly!

Apart from great characters, there’s a lot of hot steamy- let me find me a vampire that takes me against a wall- sex and I couldn’t get enough. But there’s also an amazing storyline that has all the elements of a super fabulous series that keeps you hooked.

I cannot recommend this enough, even if you don’t think you like supernatural romance, you will love this! The only thing that made it a 4.75 star instead of a 5 was that it had some cheesy parts in the H & he’s monologues.

I have been looking for a good paranormal for a while now and I am so glad I wasn't disappointed! I FREAKING LUUUURRRVVVEEDDD IT!!!! The whole Onyx Assassins drew me in! 5 badass men and sexy as hell! Lol. We have Alek, King and mate to Lyric, this is their story. We then have Lachlan, Ransom, Benedict, and Hawk. The bond between them is like no other and they each have something about them, that makes them extraordinary! I love them all. In this read Alek falls for a human, his mate Lyric but all is not that it seems. Filled with truths revealed and betrayals and lies exposed, not to mention the action and hot sex makes for a fantastic read! I cannot wait to start on Lachlan's story next! I am so happy that another goodreads friend, liked and recommended this book to read! I love vampires so much!!
So freaking happy😊😊 4.5 stars

Gostei da mocinha... N gostei do vampiro rei, a sociedade vampira é bem patriarcal e a autora sempre pontua o machismo com as proprias personagens, mas nao fica militante sobre... Gostei disso. Boa leitura, bem facil e divertido. Sinceramente gostei mais do Xavier.

3.5 ⭐️

It’s been a while since I’ve read a vampire romance. For a first book in the series it was pretty interesting. It takes some typical parts of this type of story : a king who needs a queen, a woman was doesn’t know about the supernatural, hidden societies… etc

I liked the characters as well as the plot. While predictable in some ways, it was still enjoyable and I’m intrigued by the other assassins.

Alek and Lyric made for good MCs and I could feel the chemistry between them. As always with Samantha Whiskey, I got sucked in by the writing so no complaints on that part. However I would have liked a few more sex scene for more meaningful conversations between Alek and Lyric or even the others guys as I don’t feel like I know that much about them in the end.

A solid book nonetheless.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
🌶️🌶️/5

This book was a fun short fantasy read. I love fated mate stories and I love the premise of their society! Alek was protective, dark, alluring, sexy, and so much more. I loved him.

I loved Lyric, she was strong and kind and willing to do whatever it takes for the people she loves.

There were a few lull moments where I was waiting for something to happen. I wish I could have seen them get to know each other more. It just felt like they were together only because they were mates and I would like to have seen and feel that they would be together if they weren’t fated.

There was a plot point I didn’t think was utilized as much as it could have been but overall I enjoyed the book!

Whiskey may have embarked on “Crimson Covenant” as a passion project but she has successfully built another fascinating world for her readers with the “Onyx Assassins” series.

Paranormal is not normally my personal jam, but Whiskey hooked me from Chapter 1 with Alek and Lyric’s story. This book has a little bit of everything, vampires, assassins, kidnapping attempts, dark plots, ancient secret societies, forbidden love, siblings bonds, and a “bat cave”.

Overall, it is a delicious treat that leaves you wanting more and wishing Whiskey could wave a magic wand to give us Lachlan and Valor’s story immediately.

"Eu tinha encontrado minha companheira e a reivindicado. Estou finalmente inteiro. Mas não pertenço apenas a mim mesmo, por que Lyric me possui, corpo e alma."

"Carmesim é a cor da vida, e é isso que você é para mim agora, minha vida."

"Você sabe como era minha vida antes de você aparecer?
Era noite após noite alimentando-me, lutando e enchendo horas sem sentido com política e burocracia. Você é oque dá sentido à minha vida agora. Sem você não há nada."

This book is a nice introduction to the intricacies of this paranormal world. I do wish that the romance wasn’t so much an insta-love situation and that Alek had fought it more. The author also needs to up the smut level a bit as I truly don’t think vampires would be quite that….vanilla. Having said all of that, Alek and Lyric are very well written and their story is fun to read. There’s lots of political drama and action involved in discovering a nefarious plot. There’s also a lot of fun secondary characters for future books. Overall this was a good read.

Is this the vampire drama I’ve been searching for?

Sort of!

The premise is very intriguing and plot wise?? A nail biter. On the other hand, I felt like the author was trying to accomplish TOO much in the span of one novel… the addition of like 5 different plot points after the 50% mark had the end of the book feeling like a CW show. But I loved the dialog and spice so 🤷‍♀️

Ultimately I wished the story had been more character driven (bc the characters had such great building blocks) but I am looking forward to book 2!

A new world from Samantha Whiskey?
I didn't see that one coming.
Having read so many PNR's I can honestly say I was hesitant, to dive back into that world.
I shouldn't have been.

This book was different from anything else I have read. Yes, there are all manners of paranormal beings but I was pleasantly surprised.

High steam, drama, plot twists and interesting characters kept me absolutely riveted.

I devoured this book in one sitting, not an easy feat for me these days.

1.5 stars rounded up to 2 because I finished it. I think I've reached my peak interest in smutty paranormal romance.

I'm just going to say this had insta-lust, insta-love, and a whole lot of shmexy sex with a VERY small focus on story development/building. I have no desire to read the next books in the series because it will be more of the same, just a couple different faces in the world.

Well, I may read the one about the King's assassin, Hawke, because ....reasons.

Talk about heart stopping!

What a wild ride! After devouring Samantha’s hockey books, I wasn’t sure about these, but the temptation was too great. Fantastic read that I’m sure had a few flaws, but it was so good, I didn’t even care! Loved it!!!

--Missing depth, and a more intimate connection
--Plenty of action to keep me turning the pages
--SPICE

This is normally not my genre and not something I would usually pick up, but since I've read and enjoyed a lot by this author, I figured I'd give it a go and what would you know, I had a good time! It's exactly what you would expect from an insta-love vampire romance, but during finals season, this is just the level of mental energy I can give to reading.

Well, better than my last book so 3.5 stars.
I appreciated the wit and pluck from the heroine but ultimately was bogged down by the thought I had every frickin time the hero is like "no I can't drink from her, I will hurt/kill her" so I will CONTINUE TO ABSTAIN AND MAKE IT WORSE.

WTF people? Ever heard of an apple a day scenario? He could have easily taken a little bit each day, quick and easy, and still kept his faculties without spiraling out of control. That was very distracting for me.

And we have a girl raised in the foster system who can pay to buy her own condo and put herself thru school to get a doctorate but absolutely no idea of what work she did to earn all this financial independence??? Need a better foundation for the story. And it bothered me that she never followed up with getting her belongings from her home, or sell her home, or all those things that go with being an adult.

I feel like they were a good couple but ultimately Alek did nothing to make me fall in love with him.

Scenes are hot, but ultimately I started glazing over them since Vampire sex is SO amazing that I will never be able to comprehend. I liked his guards? friends? assassins? They provided some comic relief. I only read this book so I could read book 2 about the hot Scotsman, so hopefully it will be better.

Wow! That was the best Samantha Whiskey book I have ever read! It was quite possibly the best book I've read of 2020 if not just the best book I've read ever!

I could not put it down once I started it, I was so enraptured with the story that was weaved! I fell in love with the story of Alek and Lyric and love the whole mating concept! Alek is the epitome of alpha and it was amazing to see him fall for Lyric.

Paranormal romance is not something I ever read and I was skeptical, but I decided to give it a try since I tend to devour every book Samantha writes and I'm so glad I took that chance. I had no idea this story and series was missing in my life!

I loved every single character that we were introduced to in this book! I really hope we get a story for every one of the Assassins including Avianna (even though a part of me thinks she will end up with one of the Assassins). I also hope we get to read about the Lycans and Witches in a spin-off series down the road once we've read about all the Assassins.

ARC Review

Samantha Whiskey once again never disappoints me and this new series was exactly what I needed. When I read the first chapter of Crimson Covenant I was so in love with the new world that Samantha made. I haven’t read a lot of vampire stories but this one is really up there.

The characters and the world were written so beautifully and with so much detail and care. Lyric and Alek were phenomenal and even when I knew the ending was coming, I WANTED MORE! I wish we got to see a pregnancy scene, hopefully we’ll get to see it in the future. There’s so many changes that happen within this story and I absolutely loved how GOOD THIS WAS!

Now I can’t wait for Lachlan’s story because I just know that the Scot will make me fall in love with him
