Read till chapter 479 (where the anime stopped)

The series starts of with one of the best arc in the Shounen genre, but isn't exactly able to reach the same level of storytelling (although it tries really hard to do so).

Kubo clearly has one of the best artstyles I have ever seen, period. Many times I found myself just staring at the beautiful doublespreads, not able to comprehend the time that must have crept in these weekly releases.

The characters were overall pretty great: fantastic character design, but sometimes lacking a bit of background to fully understand the character. The villains were also pretty great (backstory wise), but in the end suffer under the MASSIVE powercreep.

I thought that Bleach (in it's early stages) had the most potential out of the big three. But suffers so much under the powercreep, that most characters aren't even recognizable as themselves towards the end. What could otherwise could have been interesting fights between 2 swordsmen and their swords abilities, became so utterly blown out of proportion that the panels just were filled up with energy beams flying all over the place.

Now did I have fun reading this: ABSOLUTELY! I had a real blast and the story really managed to keep me interested at all times. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who likes some good 'ol shounen. Also I would recommend you hold on tight for all the twists and turns coming up in the story: it's one heck of a ride.

Very exited to see the rest animated SOON (October). It's gonna be crazy I'm sure!

The second time i read this from start to finish. A lovely sentiment to my teenage years as well as a great read in general. Reading the manga once more makes me wish for the anime to continue even more so!

Kurosaki Ichigo is a fifteen years old boy who can see ghosts. He meets Kuchiki Rukia, a "Soul Reaper" trying to protect Ichigo's family against a "Hollow" (an undead monster attacking the living). Things don't go according to the plan and Rukia ends up having to transfer some of her powers to Ichigo who saves the day and becomes a Soul Reaper himself. Reluctantly, he begins to protect his town while trying to keep up with his education and social life. But the hollows keep coming and the stakes keep getting higher.

Bleach is a fantastic manga. It is also the first (and so far only the one) I've ever read, so keep that in mind. It's got cool samurai-like sword fights, action-packed story that keeps pushing forward, placed in an intriguing world full of history, mystery and awesome characters.

Ichigo is the protagonist, but the Bleach cast is staggering. It is the thing I would normally be completely lost in, but the books do a great job introducing them and their differences so gradually that it never became a problem.

And they're all great, with their backstories, fighting styles and abilities. I got hooked instantly and stayed hooked throughout its staggering 74 volumes. Tito Kube has managed to build and draw a world that stayed with me and kept me coming back, desperate for more.

Unfortunately, Bleach suffers from an affliction common to long-running series: upping up the stakes, inventing more and more grave threats and dealing with them by even more fantastic powers. The heroes fight godlike creatures somewhere around the half of the series and literal gods will have appeared before the whole story ends.

Over time, things become harder to follow and the reader loses a sense of scale. Is this fantastic power going to be enough to withstand that fantastic threat? Who knows!

Tite Kubo has managed to tone things down back to a manageable level in one of the later arcs, but then let everything blow completely out of proportion again at the very last one.

The other thing that bothered me throughout was the rather blatant cheesecake aspect. A large proportion of the female protagonists feature humongous breasts and the male gaze is in full force.

I quite enjoy a bit (or indeed a lot) of sexiness, but for the most part, Bleach does it in an over-the-top crass manner. That said, I've only now learned that the target audience for this manga is teenage boys. I don't think that makes it right, but I get it I guess.

An aside about the anime based on Bleach: I have seen it a couple of times prior to reading the manga and it is the most faithful translation of a "book" into a "movie" that I've ever seen. The anime follows the plot perfectly, the characters give off the same vibe and the two works really feel like two sides of the same coin.

I have had a blast with Bleach. It has a special place in my heart.

Great characters, great story. Has one of the best power systems in manga/anime. Some of the best villains, too. Love this series.

Bleach just oozes style.

From a certain point in the manga onwards, Kubo's art style achieves a combination of elegance and coolness that, in my view, remains unrivaled. Not to mention all the amazing character designs, awesome world-building, and the (sometimes) minimalist panel backgrounds. Something else I really appreciate in Kubo's work is his tendency to refrain from making the "good guys" seem heroic as they defeat their opponents; instead, Kubo often draws them in sombre, reflective or humble moods as their enemies fall before them.

With a manga of Bleach's length, there's bound to be some highs and lows, so in an attempt to be (somewhat) realistic, I'm giving Bleach 4.5/5 stars.
Nevertheless, Bleach remains one of my favourite works.

Not my favorite series, but far from the worst. Way better than it was hyped up to be.

Upsides: creative bankai, cool cerebral concepts, poetic concepts and messages about personality and character, visually one of the best Mangas you will ever read, great ensemble of characters, great intercharacter dynamics, more gender balanced than a lot of other Shonen, lots of great minor character personalities, characters regularly change clothes and have a sense of fashion, great plot twists once in a while and groups/events have their necessary backstories.

Downsides: Ensemble breaks down after Soul Society arc as series becomes very Ichigo focused, settings dont really change very much, story arc is essentially three repetitions of the same story with different elements, pacing is 0 or 100 with no in between, most characters had little depth and I came away from this series with zero characters I actually cared about very much, and mostly, the story becomes solely focused on the main protagonist more than I have seen for any other major series.

TL:DR Im glad I read it, but I likely won't revisit it ever again.

I watched the Bleach anime way before I started to read the manga and it was interesting to see the differences between the anime and the manga. The fillers of the anime definitely added more world-building even if it was not canon. I did wished that we can get more depth in some of the characters (ex. Aizen and Urahara) but oh well.

Overall, the manga was a great read for nostalgic shounen readers and newcoming manga readers. DEFINITELY CHECK IT OUT.

Thought I'd finish up with the reading before the anime catches up with where I'd left the manga. The story is a bit weak with the ending quite rushed, but the art never disappoints. Kubo Tite is one of the great manga masters for me. His ability to create complex characters is maybe second only to Eiichiro Oda.

I’ve read this series through so many times and the story stutters a bit in the middle but the first huge arc and the final arc are masterpieces of shounen. And Tite Kubos art style consistently improves and becomes more striking as the series goes on, coupled with more interesting and understated writing.

Read this my 2/3 years ago. Amazing manga, some of best action scenes I’ve read but some below average character development for a lot of our main cast.

The plot and villains are the brightest spots no question. 10/10 across the board there, 2 top 15 arcs in manga

Typical issues of Shonen are present aka bad femme outfits and half the people look identical but...
It was a really fun read. I liked it.

I love this series.
Bleach>Naruto>OP

I've watched Bleach and Naruto, and tried OP, but I just couldn't get through even the first seasons. OP Manga is good but I didn't finish.
