Nicely written debut novel. Interesting characters. Gina was such a wicked female.
Tae was a good friend to Phy. Khia's actions were surprising & I'm looking forward to reading next part to see what happens with this couple.

Through thick and thin

Whew Khia and Phy were a whole lot. This cover did not do them justice. They were a fiery couple and that needed to be shown.

Khia was fresh out of a relationship with baby bop aka Gina. This situation ship was off to me because Khia was too much of a boss to not know his girl was bibbety boppin around town. His hesitancy with her was clear and he didn't seem to fully trust her. So why live with her and be with her for years? It felt forced.

Needless to say she was a deep after thought once Khia saw Phy again. He was clear on what he wanted and it was Phy as his wife and baby mama. He was smitten with her and made sure she knew it. She was stubborn, but he made sure to shower her with love.

Phy had a full circle moment with Khia because she crushed on him for years, but thought he wasn't interested. When he pops up and is fully invested she is swept into his orbit. I loved her spirit. She was sweet, living with a dash of good and I was here for it.

Trell was hilarious. I laughed at him throughout this book. He was Khia's first cousin and was was always looking out for him. His motto was trust no one, so he thought. He found himself "mixin" with Tae, Phy's LS, bestie, sister you know they vibes. It wasn't supposed to be a serious thing, but before he knew it he craved her presence. Trell had to claim Tae.

Sweet Tae's story was tragic. I felt for her and understood why she was closed off in some aspects. The author highlighted the plight of dark skinned girls, the misconceptions around who is perceived as fat, and some privilege shown by light skinned black women.

There were some twist and turns, but ultimately both Khia and Trell were on demon time and decide they want to start families and fully commit to being family men. Their sexual appetite was also on full display. They made sure their women knew they lived everything about them.

I found it off that the author/characters were talking to the reader. I still enjoyed the story, but I prefer the characters to live out their lives instead of talking to the audience per se.

Not to bad

So the story has quite the potential. There are parts however where it was draining to read, like we know Dick is power, but does it have to be mention ever moment. A lot of stuff was repetitive, and explanation after what the characters say made it a bit long winded. The time line jumped also, at one point they would be having a conversation and in the next line they are in the restaurant or at the hospital, etc. The characters could used more development, at some points I thought they were teenagers again. I'm hoping part 2 is a lot smoother, the characters are more mature. Those are some of the reasons it took me a while to finish.

Not my cup of tea...

Petty drama is not my thing. I was interested in this book because it seems to connect a lot of her other work and her new books have been some of my favorite so I back tracked. I'm assuming this is her first series because her current writing is way more mature. I lost interest after realizing every sentence started with either "a ni**a like me, a bi*ch like me, or baby momma...". Immature hood drama was the theme and I wasn't for it. Her current books are way better so I'll stick to her current work.

Great story

Even better the second time around. I originally read this book in 2019. I love the relationship between the two couples. Phy and Kiaere are crazy cute together. Trell and Tae are a hot mess but perfect together.

3.5 ⭐ ⭐⭐💫

This story is good, but if you are not use to the the Charleston dialect it will be hard to get in to. And this story has many points of view not just the main couple.

Khia knew that he was wrong for putting his hands on Phy. I understand that was his wife, but Phy had just came out of the coma, and had just given birth to their twins. Khia was selfish, and he overreacted. The love that they shared was real, and I hope that Phy teaches Khia a lesson, but I would love to see them work it out. I know that once Grandmama gets wind of what Khia has done, she's going to give him a great tongue lashing. Khia knows that he wasn't raised liked that, and Trell, Tae, or Grandmama will be happy about what he's done.

Tae had been through so much in her years, that she didn't open up easily to anyone. The only family that she had was Phy. Trell help open up her heart, and before you know it, they were in love. Trell or Tae didn't know anything about love. In fact, Trell stated that he would never fall in love, but he did, and not only that, but he proposed to Tae! Tae was now a fianceè, with a baby on the way. Trell was the backbone to their union, and it was a beautiful thing. Trell realized that Tae was very delicate, and he couldn't just say anything to her, or just treat her any type of way either.

Gina had been dealt a bad hand..... from being raped by her father, having her father's child, to having a delusional mother, that thought Gina was taking her man away from her, she never had a role model. Gina had it good with Khia, until she was caught red- handed cheating with a random guy in the club, she was a loose cannon between her legs. Khia put her out, and she couldn't let go. She became a stalker, and tried to kill Phy, and now she's on the run. Gina knows that Khia doesn't play, and she signed her own death certificate.

Whoa, wow.... Nice, really, really, really nice...

I was reading a book by MS. Sumter, and her main character was explaining how one of her favorite author was Mel Dau (as well as Candi B ~ whom I have read before) and since I have never hear of this author, let alone, read her, I research and found this book and man, for a first impression and first time, I LOVE it (hoping it stays like that).... Now this is explained, yes, this is my first time reading this author, and it was refreshingly nice...
Phy is an amazing woman. From the ugly overweight duckling to a smart, intelligent, independent responsible strong black woman.
Khiarea "Khia" is your epitome black, alpha, macho, man man and although have some thuggish ways, he decided education is definitely the key to being in the biggest thuggish savage up front under everyone nose and profit from it. No excuses and taking no prisoners.
Tae is the beta to Phy's alpha and a boss in her won right, but she has major parentals issues and abandonment. She is the epitome and very dedicated Line Sister and is still going strong for it...
Trell is Khia's beta and a sight of fresh air. A jock step but a beast and could be on some issues smarter than anyone out there even Khia. Loves life and tends to be a stress free individual.
These couples are so unique and special and so down to earth, you actually feel you are in this story with them... A couple things stands out though: 1) how come there haven't have any interaction between Phy and her mom since that's why she moved in the first place, 2) what was that past relationship she had before Khia?
Now that said, what is wrong with you Khia?...

If imma put down and stand behind it was a person, it’s Khiaere. Bayyyybeeee that man saw Phy and told her she was gon be his baby mama and he stood 10 toes on it. Watching how they built a relationship was so cute. Now Baby Bop psycho behind needs to be UNALIVED immediately. I mean immediately she’s the hoe, she’s the one that cheated but you out here causing Khiaere all these problems. The way Phy and Khiaere go hard for each other is everything. Trell and Khiaere’s bond is so tight and I love that for them. Watching Tae and Trell build their relationship was beautiful because the amount of trauma Tae has endured she truly deserves love. This story is filled with too many laughs, lots of love, bomb ssa sex, and a crazy psycho who needs to be gone and I can’t wait. Now Khiaere, that situation at the end was too much and I pray y’all make it through this. Great story Miss Dau!!!

FIYAH READ....... for those of you that judge a book by it's cover.... DONT with this one.. I went in hoping to just like the book...but I came out LOVING IT....
So unbelievably refreshing.... I WISH I could give this Author 10 stars in so many areas......
The book was enjoyable
The characters were down to earth and relate able
The situations and relationships were realistic

THE DIALOGUE was OUTRAGEOUSLY #RealLifeFunny... I laughed through the first 30 minutes of the book. I had to stop and re-read so many parts just to get the full effect with the #shade that was intended.

This debut book and series hit the mark dead on. I was in need of a book to bring me out of my reading funk!!!

Slowly falling in love with this series!!

Mel Dau did an amazing job with book one, I can wait to read book two!! The drama and the love so far in this book is everything and that cliffhanger all I can say is wow!

Khia and Phy have loved each other for so long but never acted on it and now it’s definitely an unstoppable love, that I love watching grow through all the drama. Watching the love between Tae and Trell grow is just as exciting and keeps the pages flowing.

Cousins and best friends trying to navigate love through all the drama of life and I can’t wait to see how Mel Dau brings it all together! I definitely recommend this book to everyone who loves a good romance book with a bit of drama.

What a Great Debut!

Loved that this story didn’t follow the norm for urban fiction. All the players educated, but take no mess. Loved Phy and Tate’s friendship and sisterhood. Loved both couples and the way they built their relationships. Phy is to stubborn and Tae can’t let go of the past. Trill is the Man, he ain’t playing with Tae. Khiaere’s love for Phy. Baby Bop was delusional, didn’t appreciate what she had but felt like she still deserving, she was corrupted early, she got from her Mama. Mama Rosa took no prisoners, she was funny as all get out! Is see where Trellis got his sense of humor from. Gina needs punishment for her actions.. Can’t wait for part 2!

Gritty sophisticated passion

This book is a page turner!!! I loved the author's writing style and how she incorporated Charleston lingo, landmarks, and culture into this love story. At first, I was not here for Khiaere and how he approached and spoke to Phy. As the storyline grew, their banter and conversations made me smile while reading the book. I loved the complexities of the other characters and how it leaves room for additional stories to be written. Love, passion, heartbreak, and revenge wrapped in one. I don't want to spoil the book by saying more but once you finish reading it, you'll be running to get part two.

whew

Another good one by Mel, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I couldn’t stop laughing, Trell and Khia are straight fools lmfao. Their girls Phy and Tae were what they needed in their lives to ground them. The storyline flowed and it had me on edge during a few chapters.

Gina. . I don’t even know what to say about this ***** She's a freaking psycho. Sometimes you have to choose your jump offs more carefully. Though her backstory was sad and her mama was trifling. Still, she’s a freaking psycho.

Some of these se* scenes — whew lol. This is just book one of a four part series. Let’s hope the next books are just as good.

Smorgasbord

Cliffhangers typically annoy me. However, I need the reprieve, a break, intermission & or a time out SOMETHING anything from witnessing the live crossing over of SNAPPED & The First 48🤦🏾‍♀️🤭 broadcast event ‼️Nonetheless, “Kriaere & Phy: A Charleston Love Story was/is a literary smorgasbord. …inundated with a whole lot of everything, savor the flavors, eat slowly & make room for dessert 🤷🏾‍♀️‼️ In just forty one chapters I’ve experienced equal numbers of emotional trauma, triggers, horror, joy, banter, astonishment & elation watching the antic of Phy, Khia, Tae, Trell & the outlier Gina. Watch ya back girllll!….”bad boys, bad boys what cha gonna do when they come for you…”😬🫣🍿‼️

Oh my ..Gina Gina ..it started when you were young. And that's not your fault. But when we want to do better...we find a way. I feel bad for her in her youth. But as she got older, she found a way to use that and now she's horrible.

Now THIS -"I don’t care what y’all reading bitches think…I will win by any means necessary."😂😂😂🫣🫣 I d like.. wait.. is she talking to me🤔😂😂 Cause me by surprise 😂.

But this book was so fast paced. A lot was going on, but I was here for it. But there is a part 2.... so be ready.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a pretty good read for her first book. It wasn’t to much drama but just enough. I don’t understand Gina dumb a** , that girl was stupid and annoying. Hopefully it don’t take them forever to catch her. I like Khia and Trell for Phy and Tae they all were good together. I don’t know why Khia would put his hands on Phy now🤦🏾‍♀️🤔 but hopefully he don’t start doing unnecessary stupid 💩

🔥🔥🔥

These guys loving their ladies. I sense Khia is about ready to blow a gasket. The part where Tae discussed her past pulled on my heart strings. Trell kept me laughing. Gina is a certified nut case, but after the conversation with her mom...I can definitely see why. Phy got on a few of my nerves. I hope these babies make her grow up a little. This was Avery good book. Now I’m on to part 2.

This book was bomb. The author came so strong with her first book. When I say I absolutely love all the characters, this book held my interest from beginning to end. I love the couples and the way they love each other. Khia don’t play about his Phy! I can’t wait to read Part 2 and see how the relationship flourish and mature. I am definitely a fan. In my opinion this book is unique and unlike most of the series I have read. The author is truly gifted with the pen.

🙃🙃

It was a good book I could pretty much tell what was going to happen overall after the first 3 pages so it became a typical story I personally did not like the switch up in writing one mine you reading the story next the character is talking to the reader directly then they are back talk to each other or telling the story maybe I’m overthinking lol overall a good read curious to see how part 2unfolds

So for so good

Can't wait for part two! Khia, Phy, Trell, and Tae's relationships are so interesting. Gina is on the run. The two couples are definitely going through throwing pains. The women are trying to build in to their autonomy but the man are pushing for dominance in the relationship. Khia has choked Phy cause she just told him that she was going to do what she wanted to do in regards Gina. Chile.....lemme she what is about to happen
