The Cookbook of Julian of Norwich: From Hazelnuts to Pottages

Rate this book
Accompanied by inspiration from All Shall Be A Modern-Language Version of the Showings of Julian of Norwich

Julian of Norwich was deeply concerned with the spiritual world—but she believed it was firmly rooted in the practical ordinary details of daily life, including eating and tasting. Her thoughts pair well with the recipes of her day, for she writes again and again of the nourishment God gives to us and the sweet taste of the Divine.

Joy and love are the two words that best sum up Julian's spirituality. May this cookbook, based on the food of Julian’s lifetime as well as her writing, give you joy . . . and the certainty that you are Divinely loved.

This is a lovely little book which weaves the material with the spiritual through medieval recipes and the quotes of Julian of Norwich. I really enjoyed reading the recipes, which contain many combinations of ingredients unfamiliar to modern tastes, but which sound delicious. I will definitely be trying some of them.

The quotes are also lovely, many pertaining to nourishment, nurture, generosity, and hospitality. The illustrations too are worth taking time to look at.

My only wish is that the author had provided references for the recipes, which have obviously come from another source. That said, this is a lovely book to read. I could almost taste the food as I read it. A step back in time.

Despite the misleading title, this is NOT a cookbook written by Julian of Norwich. Although no source is provided, they seem to be bastardized modern interpretations from the Forme of Cury. But the originals aren't provided, so it's hard to tell how accurate they are. Comparing to some other versions, there are a bunch of errors, I would stay away from this one.

The illustrations are cute, and the quotes by Julian are inspiring if you're into that sort of thing, but don't really have anything at all to do with the recipes.

A fun little book that is a blending of probable recipes from Julian of Norwich’s time with quotes from Julian and tidbits about the food practices. I’ve made a few of the recipes which were quite good!

The book is nice, but I don't think the recipes really have anything to do with Julian of Norwich.
