This second volume of the Giant Days comic follows the adventures of Daisy, Esther and Susan in their second semester at the University of Sheffield. There are shenanigans in student politics, flat-hunting and film-making, along others. Along the way hearts are broken, the Night World is explored, and questionable decisions are made.
The key relationships between Susan, Esther and Daisy is unshakeable, and they're all there for each other, whenever it matters. Outwith that "coven", the friendship between Ed and McGraw is pretty strong, and usually a pleasure to read. There's a lovely visual gag early on where McGraw builds a fake wall in front of his bedroom door to hide from "Big Lindsay" (who turns out to be not as scary as made out).
I'm looking forward to seeing what they get up to next. In the mean time, night be with you.
I don't even know exactly what it is that makes me love Giant Days so much. I usually don't like realistic fiction. I'm much more of a fantasy/sci-fi/dystopian kind of person. I love Rat Queens and Saga, Y: The Last Man and Bitch Planet. But this series is just so perfect. It's funny and relatable and amazing. It is just so well-rounded and entertaining in a way that also makes you think. Great series. I can't get enough of it.
I also really like Max Sarin's illustrations. She's not afraid to draw the female characters with a wide range of expressions, even if they don't look attractive. That's something I always hated about traditional superhero comics. Why are all the women gorgeous all the time? Now that I'm older and I know about the male gaze and all that I get it, but I love that there are great artists out there who let the characters look, act, and feel like real people. I just love these illustrations. They are amazing.
Overall, a great book. So entertaining to read and enjoy. I cannot wait to read volume 3.
This volume continues to tell the same story about the same characters, without much development, but it only one term later. This one was another enjoyable set of issues, and I do like that each issue is a self contained mini-story, with a set beginning, middle, and end. It was fun enough that I put the next few volumes on hold at the library. We'll see how long I stick with it, I don't even know how long it goes or if it's ongoing, but for now, it's a welcome, light, endearing read.
4 stars! Ed got laid! I repeat Ed got laid. Love Ester but chick is crazy why force yourself into night world to save Susan. Why? We all saw that breakup coming Susan can’t blame McGraw. Camping really Daisy because Susan and Ester seem wilderness friendly. #SuGraw #CutOff #DaisyTakesATourOfBerlin
I love how witty and true and relatable this series is. It's so amazing that today creative people can show their work to everyone and be appreciated by some geeks and nerds like me. And it is so amazing that such a girlie and cute comic book exists. I really, really love it.
Essentially more re-read. But also with more of the original self-published bit. Which is actually both worse written and with worse art. Not sure sometimes whether being compulsive around my reading is somewhat ridiculous. Anyway. Vapid. Pointless. Really not worth reading the first time.
