Post-Human #6

Superhuman

Rate this book
Action-packed, thought-provoking, an award winner for best metaphysical literature, and the series most often compared to Asimov's best work, The Post-Human series nearly doubles in length with this single installment. A book that is best described as multiple books within a single novel, Superhuman's structure perfectly reflects a narrative that explores multiple timelines from parallel universes, multiple versions of our heroes, our villains, and in some cases, hero and villain in the same package. You'll never think of the Post-Human series the same way again, you'll never think of a novel in the same way again, and you will never think of reality itself in the same way after experiencing Superhuman for yourself.

At last, the wait is over...

Not going to lie, I was disappointed with this book - especially after waiting 6 years for it to come out. I had to force myself through parts as I was just losing interest. I actually put it down and read a different book during this reading as I was just struggling. I thoroughly enjoyed the first 5 books and have recommended them to others. However Superhuman just seemed like a really really long setup for a new book. Wasn't horrible, but wasn't great either.

Neat Premise

The author put a lot of creativity in this book. It didn’t really pull me in though. At times, I had to force myself to keep reading. However, I enjoyed books 1-5 immensely.

I’m a huge fan of David Simpson’s work, and have been for years. The post human series has been a shining light in modern sci-fi that shows the potential for technology to be a net benefit to society, trivializing our modern problems while being highly entertaining and thought provoking. However, I really struggled with this book. I found the flashback sequence, which feels like it is 70% of the book, with the nihilistic vision that V-SINN is an Infiniti computer so there’s nothing we can do made everything in the book trivial and irrelevant. At best it was a constant string of Oh there’s something I realized but I can’t tell you or I just picked up on something but I’m not going to elaborate, again making the book feel like a forced exercise. Historically I feel that David Simpson’s books are often underrated, and underappreciated, making this review difficult, but I still have hopes that book 7 will go back to the roots that made the series so special.

I want to express how much I have enjoyed this series, and yes, you definitely want to read them in order. Book 6, Superhuman, continues the saga of our well known characters as they fight an out of control AI that is determined to wipe out humanity, and well, everything else including the multiverse. I enjoyed the story but felt this book covered a lot of ground the other books had gone over so it felt a bit tedious and drawn out. Incredibly thought-provoking, our characters show how not to give up in a no-win scenario. I thought this book would take us to the end of the story, but it appears there is still a final chapter to be written

One of the very, very few books I’ve abandoned.

I struggled through to around the 25% mark, but that was enough. Previous books were excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed them. But 250 odd pages to describe something that could’ve been done in about 30 felt such a drag. It felt like the author was getting paid by the word and unnecessarily dragging every single thing out beyond the bearable.

A shame.

I have to agree with some of the comments alreay written: the premise is great, the book feels like a gigantic filler to prepare for another book.
Yes, a lot was explained but it was basically slow and painful to read.
Let's hope the next one will avoid the pitfalls encountered by this book.

Hard to read

I have read several of his books, but this one seemed just plain hard to read. When I finally reached midway it seemed to get easier and more interesting. Not sure I would try it again!

So hard to read.

Found myself speed reading whole chapters in 19 seconds as I skimmed the just of it and realized it was just a rehash of what came before.
So painful to grind through. I'll pass on the last book.

I hate giving up on an author but this book was the final straw. The only way to describe this book would be to call it clickbait. Repetition after repetition, characters that are so horribly 2 dimensional that a high school creative writing school teacher would laugh if a student turned this in as an essay. Every female character is so emotional that I have to wonder if Simpson ever met a woman in real life. It seems like his characters are hyped up on meth most of the time. They are so clingy they are cartoonish. I went from liking this story to hating it.
Another lousy trick is the last half of this book stops letting you know what percentage of the book is left (kindle edition) and then keeps repeating the chapter title - "The Ending" and then after doing it 5-6 times it ends the book as a cliffhanger.

The biggest problem is that the author started with a good premise, then ran out of things to say after book two. He kills characters, brings them back, kills them, brings them back, kills them, brings them back (if this bores you imagine it for three more books). This is like a horror story that won't end because the killer keeps coming back, and back, and back, and back.

Anyway, I'm done. The author has another book, who cares. he has other series, who cares. He extended this for no reason other than to grab some more dollars. Probably the reason the movie he hyped 7 years ago never happened. I won't be reviewing any more books by this author.

What to do while waiting for the end of the universe

So I have invested weeks in re-reading this series.
I couldn't remember most of volume 6.
I definitely did not recall the ending.

I am disappointed that the ending of this volume , released around the time of the pandemic, found the story on hiatus now for 5+ years.

I am not one who enjoys stories with extensive violence, sex, horror, etc. But I found myself drawn thru the story.

I hope to one day be able to read the remainder of this tale before my personal universe is terminated.

Great book, so appropriate for today

The whole series was captivating and kept my interest. It was kind of scary to read, with today's headlines about AI. The biggest real concern about AI is that it is, and will move too fast, this book may be prophetic, which makes it even scarier.

This was a good read, although he could have condensed it a bit, a little too descriptive at times, but very much worth it.

Mind bending tale

The book adds yet another layer around the Keats and future of humanity story with mind boggling depth. The story starts slow while it spins the blanket we as reader get smothered in in the last 20% of a crazy whirlwind. The end makes you gasp and is a giant gasp for more!

Epic.

Very mind bending

I really love the storytelling by this author. Very creative take on all things sci-fi. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who day dreams about what humanity is capable of.

Enjoyable, but long

I really enjoyed it and I am glad I could finish it but it took a long time. I wish that it had an audio for it, that is how finished the other five.

disappointing

This entry in the series went way too long and had a terrible ending. I much preferred the earlier books in the series.

I'm really dissappointed that after 1300 pages there is no story completion. I really enjoyed the first 5 book, this one seems really bloated.

Series keeps getting better and better!

I've read all the books in this series and they continue to get better and better. The plot lines from the 1st book are still relevant in the 6th book and I'm a huge fan of that. A fantastic author who I can't wait to read again.

Excellent story. Scary how possible this type of AI could be. Really enjoyed it. What a cliffhanger. Omg! Bring on next book. Can't wait.
