A battle. A crown. The conqueror. The conquered. Medieval England—forever changed by the Battle of Hastings. And the rise of the formidable Wulfriths.
A REBEL MOST WANTED
Vitalis of the Saxon resistance wearies of leading men to victory only to next lead them to death at the hands of the invaders. But when an opportunity arises to shame the Norman who claims England’s throne, he takes it, as well as proof of that shaming. Now more than ever, William the Conqueror is determined to capture the rebel leader. And greater that possibility when Vitalis must keep his word to recover an impetuous Norman lady abducted by Saxon allies. Can he free her without making enemies of his own people? More, can he forgive the one determined to pry open his heart when bloodshed proves the price of her release? And what is to be done with the usurper’s son who is as determined to capture his sire’s enemy as the vengeful warriors pursuing the elusive rebel?
A LADY MOST RECKLESS
Lady Nicola of the D’Argents thinks too highly of her ability to defend herself and too little of consequences. Thus, when good intentions go awry, she finds herself abducted and her chance of escape thwarted by her own recklessness. Now a captive on the Isle of Ely—the last bastion of English resistance—she discovers the mighty Saxon warrior, Vitalis, seeks to return her to her family. And that her fascination with this enemy has not abated in the years since the girl of her first looked upon the man of him. But when he sets in motion his plan to free her, once more Nicola proves her own worst enemy. Though he may never forgive her for what she costs him, she is determined to make a way for him in Norman-ruled England—even at the sacrifice of her reputation.

Oh happy day, when Amazon delivers a new release from Tamara Leigh to my Kindle! I have just spent several hours engrossed in the tale of Vitalis and Lady Nicola D’Argent, and would that I could spend many more. Tamara Leigh wields the pen with the same adroitness as her Wulfen-trained warriors do the sword, only it’s ever so much more delightful to be on the receiving end of her pen!
As always with Tamara Leigh’s books, this was a completely immersive reading experience from the setting right through to the political and personal tensions. The groundwork for this story was laid in the previous book, Heartless, so the event shown in the prologue was already known to me, but the scene absolutely crackled with tension as it played out in full, sealing the Conqueror’s determination to capture Vitalis. Vitalis’s story is so compelling. He’s a proud Saxon, and yet he’s also beginning to acknowledge the reality of the situation in England, four years on from the battle at Hastings and with the Danes still angling for a piece of the pie. How will he find his place in such a foreign England?
“Though once Vitalis had considered Denmark, he had little more respect for those led by King Sweyn than men who answered to Le Bâtard. Wales, then? Scotland? Ireland? None appealed, but what did in this world whose broken pieces had been fit back together in the years since the great battle to form a picture so grim it was unrecognizable?”
And that’s completely discounting the little matter of the termagant he’s promised to rescue and return to her family…
Speaking of Nicola, she’s one of my favourite characters in this series. She hasn’t earned the moniker “Reckless” for nothing—she’s young and passionate, and often speaks and acts ere she thinks things through—and yet she manages to avoid joining that class of heroines dubbed TSTL (too stupid to live). Part of that is simply the excellence of Tamara Leigh’s characterisation, but it’s also because Nicola is very quick to acknowledge the consequences of her actions and is earnest in her desire to improve, even if she doesn’t always succeed as well as she would like. And no matter how much she matures (and she certainly does in this story), she still manages to retain that youthful passion and guilelessness that makes her a breath of fresh air.
Quite simply, I cannot get enough of Tamara Leigh’s books or her characters. All her books go on my “Books I Will Reread Forever and Ever, Amen” shelf.
I LOVE this series. And although Reckless was a little more meandering than I usually like, plot-wise, I truly enjoyed Vitalis and Nicola's story. It hit me in the feels :) And that cave/waterfall meltdown scene--YIKES!!! IT WAS EVERYTHING AND MORE. Wahh.
This series is so homey and feely and I love the band of D'Argents and how new members keep being (affectionately) gobbled right up into the clan. Cheers to Leigh for adding a ton of great historical details without making it boring--and digging deep with the characters and making their experiences/growth/pain/breakthroughs so satisfying to read :) Ah. Yes. Can't wait for the next two books.
Oh my gosh. I was sad to see this book end! I loved all the little nuggets of wisdom and wonderful lines the author hid in a beautiful story. I'm a big fan, and this book is just outstanding. I loved Nicola's story and it was wonderful to see her grow from an impertinent girl to a woman with some wisdom. Vitalis is more than the grumpy rebel. There were funny moments that had me laughing out loud and very poignant moments that made me think hard and go, wow... good advice. "It all started with a woman..." Perfect line! The arguments Nicola has with herself were just laugh out loud funny. Thank you for a wonderful story.
WOW this book is a winner, as are all Tamara Leigh's books. How I love this series, and the books keep getting more and more exciting if this is possible. You will love Nicola, certainly a lovable vixen, and Vitalis, a fierce warrior, the whole books keeps you spellbound, wanting to keep reading to know what happens next. Nicola is kidnapped by the Danes and Vitalis is tasked with bringing her safely back to Wulfrith Castle hence the suspense all the way through this wonderful book. You won't be disappointed and you won't be bored and the best part is all of Tamara's books are stand alone so although I can't wait for the next book on another beloved brother Theriot, Reckless finishes and you are not left frustrated and wondering what happens. And to top it all off it even has an epilogue which I love.
Wow. Simply the best book in the series and, for me, the author's best creation. Since book 1, Nicola and Vitalis' story is anticipated due to their previous interactions and "Reckless" depends on a context presented in "Heartless", although everything is explained again throughout the book.
Nicola is a daring, likeable and captivating heroine - you can't help but admire how she is willing to learn and is courageous enough to express her feelings and emotions in an unique way. Vitalis has been a background character since the first book and I really was looking forward to seeing how he would get his "happily ever after", after all the sorrow, anger and loss he experienced in life. I wasn't disappointed - Nicola proved to be just what he needed: “Your light has kept my head up, Nicola. You are the long-awaited answer to prayers I could hardly speak.” JUST, PERFECT. 🥲
Although I liked this book, I had a hard time believing the romance between Nicola and Vitalis. And I didn’t like her reckless behavior. She seemed childish for a young woman and seemed to charm/fool/use men to get what she wanted, often to the detriment of the men. I did like Vitalis and his honorable character. And Zedekiah and Bjorn were great secondary characters. I also liked how the author has researched her subject well, including the history and geography of the setting. It has prompted me to do my own research into this period. I think it must be difficult to put words in the mouths of historical figures but the author does a wonderful job. William the Conqueror has appeared in all of the books so far and I feel I have come to know a lot about him.
The story is excellent just like all of Tamara Leigh’s books but I was disappointed with the audio. I’ve listened to every one of her books on audible and they were great, but for some reason this one wasn’t read the same. The character voices were great but the narration in between was unnecessarily exaggerated, droning out words to be dramatic and the English accent sounded fake from trying too hard. In addition there were a lot of times the narrator was just reading words in an overly dramatic fake accent and not really paying attention to the subject/context being read. Really distracting. I will read the next book in the series on my own.
Vitalis was an adventure and Nicola was an addition. Taking a cutting from King Williams clothing was a daring deed and having Prince Richard return it to the King seemed to enhance Prince Richard's standing with his sire. It took almost all of the tale to finally have love expressed between the two.Vitalis' friend the Blacksmith, Zedekiah, was the kind of friend all men would desire. Hoping a bright future for Nicola and Vitalis and the family they are striving to build. There is more war and strife between the countries but a resolution eventually comes between them and peace ensures.
Vitalis the magnificent rebel that travels with us throughout the series finally has his story told. He is a character you can’t help but fall in love with and hurt when he experiences hurt. Great depth to his character as well as Nicola, the spirited, untamed beauty who falls in love with him. I love how these stories overlap, entwine, and continue moving forward based on the predecessors. Mary Sarah provides a perfect narration as Tamara Leigh provides the perfect scenarios. 🥰🥰😃
I very much enjoyed this 5th book in the Age of Conquest series, the story of the only D'Argent sister Nicola and Vitalis, the worthy Saxon warrior who plays an important role in all the previous books. As with the others, I love that the characters are all still intertwined. I guessed the general outcome of the ending because it is similar to 3 of the other books, but then again, I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
These books are written to where one cannot put them down. This was my fifth in this serious,it's unimaginable when these characters are in near death experiences that they will ever survive such harrowing situations, such fantastic writing. (Love This author ) Thank you for your books that are written without a curse which to me makes the reading so enjoyable.
Another great medieval romance from Tamara Leigh! Nicola D’Argent was one of my all time favorite heroines- she was so irrepressible, and such a great foil for the suffering Vitalis. This one had a bit less political intrigue and highlighted more personal struggles than the previous, but the character arcs were wonderful.
Nicola and Vitalis’s story is… Wow. It touches your heart and reminds that all things work together for good and that our God is a Redeemer. A Redeemer of lives, a Redeemer of that which is lost-faith, courage… Again, WOW… Reckless is a beautiful addition to the Age of Conquest series!
As always, Tamara's stories grip me from the first page! I am swept away to a land of lords and ladies and the struggle for nations. I come home with greater appreciation for my own home, family and country. But, I love my visits to Tamara land!!
Nicola grated on me a bit at times but I loved FINALLY having a strong willed FMC that recognized her arrogance was what caused a lot of problems. Also, a man that can cry and grieve really added to his character. Highly recommend this one
Reckless is aptly named because in this tale we read about Lady Nicola who is always acting before thinking. Often, she causes events to happen that put her life, and the lives of those trying to save her, in peril. She soon learns a hard lesson and finds out she can be strong and courageous. Yet will it be enough to keep those she loves from harm?
When I first started reading books written by Tamara Leigh I was captivated and amazed at how she writes. As I’ve continued to read her books this feeling has never left me. This author knows how to write books that will stay with you long after you’ve closed the pages and put the book down.
Her stories are filled with pageantry, colorful imagery, intrigue, drama, the desire to right wrongs, strong relationships, and struggles over passions which are too fierce to ignore. From the pageantry of the customs to the action of the fighting, as well as the language of the time, there is nothing left amiss. Tamara Leigh is such a skilled storyteller. Each of her books is an invitation to travel back in time to an era we can only imagine. She brings the medieval world, to life.
Her stories have larger than life heroes and heroines, whom you will come to love and cherish. These characters may at first seem flawed, but through their struggles and the trials they have, they develop into persons of honor and integrity.
I am fascinated with learning more about this family of heroes, and with the way Tamara Leigh writes, we come to know them each with all their struggles and victories. I highly recommend this and ALL of Tamara Leigh’s books. Her storytelling will captivate you so much, you will not want to miss one of her books! I’m waiting on pins and needles for the next in this series to come out.
This this the story of Vitalis & Nicola. A rockier beginning, I think than some of the other books; it's tale was woven in and out of what happened in other books to land very nicely at the end of book 4. The Saxon rebel, Vitalis has disbanded his group and now is in the throws of rescuing a "reckless" Nicola from Danes. And she does not come quietly. They traverse England in the hopes that Vitalis can drop the Norman lady with her sister-in-law, his lost love, at Wulfen Castle. Nicola is an impetuous girl traveling into womanhood. Known for her indiscretions, which were mere ploys, she is seeking an escape from an honorable Dane who enjoys her kisses! Vitalis and Nicola are tossed together for the journey and soon become more pawns in a grasping William's hands. With all the word games William dished out, I was most eager to learn of our hero's fate. It kept me on edge! But enter the wily Nicola to serve William a game of her own! This one is littered with deep losses and great sorrow. Not so much that it removed me from the story. The laughs were sprinkled throughout but the love and devotion prevailed above all. I read the entire series (books 1-4 again) to better be ready for the release of book 5! I love all of Tamara Leigh's books. This one was no different! What an adventure!
I have so enjoyed every one of the books in this series! And Reckless is another wonderful addition to the series. While it was a bit slower building in the beginning (I didn't havemuch reading time when I started though), once it gets going I was completely absorbed into the story and stayed up Waaaaaaaaay to late to finish the book. Worth it! I loved how the characters really grew over the course of the story. Nicola really grew up and learned so much. I just have loved seeing these characters find their way. Happy sigh. Tamara Leigh's books are filled with authentic feeling setting in Medieval Europe, the sword fights are on point! They have peril and swoon worthy romance. All the things! Highly recommended this series for someone looking for clean adult medieval romance.
Ohhh, sweet tender warrior Vitalis, how you slay my heart! Another great story in this series, but STRONGLY suggest reading in order to be completely immersed in this family's saga. Nicola's feistiness tried Vitalis' patience at times, but what a woman of strength she became when he needed her most. I don't know how Mrs. Leigh continues to write such deep and meaty dialog, but she NEVER disappoints! No spoilers, but loved the tie into a character from the "The Feud" series. Well done, Mrs. Leigh. Well. Done!
I was so excited to get Nicola’s tale, along with our red haired Saxon! Reckless Nicola really drives me a little crazy so it was good to see her grow, to think first and think of others. And Vitalis! So happy he got his own tale here! I so appreciated the details from his past that we were able to learn. And I loved, loved, loved the connection to the Baron of Godsmere in The Feud series. So much so that I had to reread that tale, then the whole series. 😁 Now on to Theriot’s tale, and a bit early, yes? 🤞🏻That excerpt about Marguerite was intriguing!
I really enjoyed this book..... like all the other books. I love the Wulfriths😍 And the connections with others series!!!😍😍 looking forward the next one
