1996 couldn't be off to a better start for Justin's sophomore year of high school. He's popular enough for your average punk rock teen, he recently made the snare-line in marching band, and he seems to have caught the attention of one the best looking girls in school. There's only one High school may be going great, but something's seriously wrong with Justin's family. Mysterious events have been occurring at Justin's house; and all signs point to extraterrestrial contact. Or so he thinks... Determined to get to the bottom of his family's strange behavior, Justin enlists the help of his best friend, and soon-to-be girlfriend. (He hopes.) What begins as a simple search for answers, will soon turn into something darker and more terrifying than the three of them could ever imagine.
First of all, yes, if you have not listened to 4am and Dixie by Avail, go do that. Go ahead and listen to both while you read Jason Yachanin’s The Mysterious Happenings at 2 Morningview because Yachanin totally captured what it was to be in high school as a teen from 95-05 who skated and listened to all the bands that had ads in Thrasher. There’s a certain aspect of the kind of friendships from then that Yachanin has nailed here, people making fun of each other for petty things like dropping in. Back before we had too awful much to really critique each other on other than our skateboarding abilities. Nostalgia gut punch aside, Yachanin has written a book that feels equal parts The Gate and Stranger Things. Yachanin clearly has a love for what’s called “gateway horror” and that love is on full display in this book. While reading I couldn’t help but feel like this was the perfect book for an adult who absolutely adores the Goosebumps series. The book is lighthearted in the best possible way with a plot that slowly unravels in twists and turns in much the same way R.L. Stine’s series did; only this book is so much more in so many ways. Yachanin’s style is smooth and flows really nicely, as does the dialogue. If you’re like me and love when a book makes you feel the same way renting The Monster Squad from Blockbuster made you feel, then get some popcorn and spend a few hours in this! K thx.
My latest Halloweenmonth read, "The Mysterious Happenings at 2 Morningview" by Jason Yachanin I confess, I discovered this book because of my love for Troma movies (if you've never seen one, they truly are their own thing, but the closest I can say is that they are punk rock, extreme, intentionally offensive and gross, etc.) Mr. Yachanin starred in "Poultrygeist" (about zombie chickens, fast food and activism), and upon looking at my DVD, I was curious what the actors were up to, found Mr. Yachanin's page on Instagram, and learned he had written two books that have been described by more than one person as "Goosebumps" for adults. Naturally, I had to check them out! "The Mysterious Happenings at 2 Morningview" is a whole lot of fun. Set in 1996, it is full of nostalgia and pop culture references from the 1980s and 1990s. Sometimes our author will even interrupt the narrative in a delightful way to explain a song or movie reference. As a teenager in the 1990s, this took me back and added to the fun. Mr. Yachinin--- dare I call him Jason after our correspondence?--- plays to his strengths in the book. The narrative feels like a buddy telling you about this weird, scary shit that happened to him, like a monologue to straggler friends at the end of a Halloween party where people are describing spooky things that have occurred in their lives. Some may complain about the language, but as a young adult in the time period myself, I can tell you that it is accurate. The story follows Justin, who is going through typical high school stuff--- making the drum line, being in the school musical, and crushing hard for Leslie--- but who has mysterious happenings at home. The "Goosebumps" comparisons are apt, the chapters breeze by, often ending in a cliffhanger. I had a great time reading it, and am always happy to support indie authors! Looking forward to reading the sequel. Find it at Amazon or Barnes and Noble, or if you're lucky enough to meet Jason at a convention.
He thought his parents stayed up late watching old sitcoms, boy was he wrong...
This book will take you on a page-turning, thrilling paranormal ride through the eyes of a 90s teen. The author's voice brings you right back to a time when you could face anything as long as you had your best friend and your first big crush by your side. The story pulls you in quickly as you try to figure out what could be going on in the house right along with the characters. The writing has a great mix of nostalgic easter eggs along with comical moments that make the story even more enjoyable. My teen son and I both enjoyed reading this story and are eagerly awaiting to find out what happens to Justin and the crew next. In meantime we will have fun discussing which world we would choose.
