Seventeen-year-old Ben craves a car. His parents promise him one if he'll spend the summer in Haiti rebuilding the houses of hurricane victims. He doesn't want to do it but decides that it's worth it to get a car. He goes and, although he doesn't really like the work, he comes to appreciate Haiti's people and way of life. When he returns to California, he makes a most unexpected decision.
This was not a great work of literature. It wasn't even a good work of literature. It was merely a second year French exercise borrowed from my daughter who took French in high school. I was excited though, to read something more interesting than "Can you tell me where to find the metro", and actually understand it as a story as intended. I have been studying French through a free online program for a few months, and am not quite ready for anything more challenging.
So - four stars for creating a story that is simple but not stupid to give me something to practice on.
