Donnchadh Ó Corráin was an Irish historian and Professor Emeritus of Medieval History at University College Cork.
He was an early Irish and mediaeval historian and published on the Viking Wars, Ireland in the pre-Hiberno-Norman period and the origin of Irish language names. In addition to his position at UCC, he held academic positions at University College Dublin, Cambridge University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Oslo and Oxford University, where he was a Fellow of Balliol College.
First year as a history student can be tough when you know f-all regarding Irish history before the Anglo-Normans. This book saved my life when writing a good chunk of my first ever essays in university and it will always be dear to me. It was also quite the fascinating read! A biased 5 stars.
So many incomprehensible names and places I couldn't find on a map! I found the political sections almost impossible to follow. The social/economic stuff (eg what people ate, how they traded etc) was the easiest to read and, to me, the most interesting. It took a lot of caffeine for me to get through this, though. I'm tired, and it didn't encourage me to stay awake.
