A determined widow and a single father learn that love is about taking chances and turning over new leaves in the quaint Amish community of Promise Glen, from national bestselling author Marta Perry.
When widowed shop owner Dinah Hershberger is unceremoniously charged with safely escorting an infant to his uncle, she finds herself torn. Jacob Miller is everything Dinah could want in a partner--he's kind, handsome, strong--and nothing she can ever have. As much as she yearns to help the new family adjust, each minute Dinah spends with Jacob and the baby leaves her heart more vulnerable and her head more certain that the secret she hides makes a future with the Miller men impossible.
Jacob has long admired Dinah for her strength and independence, but it's her generosity of spirit that tempts him like never before. With Dinah at his side, Jacob opens himself up to the daunting new world of fatherhood, but how can he pursue his feelings for her when his life is in such disarray? After the disappointments of her first marriage, she deserves better than what Jacob can offer.
But love has a surprise in store for these two troubled hearts, and happiness is within reach if only they can grasp it, making Promise Glen their own promised land.
Marta Perry is a Pennsylvania-based author of over 35 novels, many of them inspirational romances. She uses her rural Pennsylvania life and her Pennsylvania Dutch heritage in writing her books, especially in her Pleasant Valley Amish series for Berkley Books and her new Amish-set suspense series for HQN Books.
Marta and her husband live in a centuries-old farmhouse in a quiet central Pennsylvania valley. They have three grown children and six beautiful grandchildren, and when she's not busy writing her next book, she's usually trying to keep up with her gardening, baking for church events, or visiting those beautiful grandkids.
A Harvest of Love was such a heartwarming novel! I really felt for Dinah as she fell in love with baby Isaac. She couldn’t help but fall in love with him, yet she knew that his mother could return and take him away at any moment. For a widowed woman who had desperately wanted a baby, she knew that she was setting herself up for heartbreak.
I also felt for Jacob. He was clearly a kind and loving man who felt as if he had failed his little sister. Now, he had also fallen in love with his nephew and enjoyed caring for him as a father would, yet he also desperately wanted his sister to return, even if it caused pain to those taking care of baby Isaac.
Jacob and Dinah were such good friends and it was clear that their friendship could turn into more intense, romantic feelings. I liked that these two ended up talking things out and eventually being open with each other about their feelings. Their friendship and the beginnings of their attraction to each other felt very realistic to me.
I would love to see these two as side characters in a future book. I want to see what their lives are like after they are married. This book is the third book in a series. I had not read the first two books and had no trouble enjoying this one as a stand alone novel.
(4.5 stars)
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
A Harvest of Love by Marta Perry is the 3rd book in The Promise Glen series. It can be read as a standalone if you are new to the series. I thought A Harvest of Love was well-written with developed, realistic characters. I like Dinah Herberger, a widow who runs the local bakery. She had a rough marriage, but Dinah has not shared the details with anyone. Unbeknownst to Dinah, Jacob heard conversations, so he suspects that the marriage was not rosy. She was unable to provide her husband with a child which still bothers Dinah. She is afraid to marry again and subject another man to a childless marriage. Jacob is a good man with a heart of gold. He is torn up that his sister has left the Amish. Jacob feels that it is his fault, and he is determined to bring her back. I loved the secondary characters that includes Dinah’s loving family. Dinah and Jacob work to take care of Anna’s child and keep him safe. As they take care of the baby, romance blooms between them. I enjoyed watching Dinah and Jacob fall in love. I did feel that the story was a touch long and the pacing was a little slow in places. I appreciated the tension which happened when someone came after the baby. It added suspense to the story. I liked that we get to catch up with the characters (Sarah, Noah, Dorcas, and Thomas) from the first two books in the series. A Harvest of Love is a sweet story that I enjoyed. It was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. It was a lovely ending to the series. My favorite line from A Harvest of Love is, “Let the present trouble be enough for now, she told herself. Trust the good Lord for the rest.” A Harvest of Love is a heartwarming story with a bouncing baby boy, delectable jelly donuts, a handsome harness maker, an affectionate family, and a benevolent baker.
Happy, happy sigh. There's just something about a Marta Perry story that satisfies every nook and cranny of my bibliophile heart. And that this book takes us back to Promise Glen makes it all the sweeter. No worries if you haven't read A Christmas Home or A Springtime Heart, because A Harvest of Love is easily enjoyed as a standalone too, though it was fun to catch up with some of the characters from the previous books! And, given the seasonal theme of this series, I'm really hoping there's going to be a summer story in our reading futures too!
Dinah's first marriage wasn't all she'd hoped it would be and Jacob knows a thing or two about life's disappointments. Neither is looking to further complicate their lives but when they bond over an abandoned baby it becomes even harder to keep emotions out of the mix.
Love the very real struggles these characters wrestle with and Perry writes in such a way that it's easy for a reader to become emotionally engaged. And the Amish community -- both family and friends -- rallying around them to help and tease and offer sage advice makes the read all the richer.
A delightful mix of angst and laughter and the hope of second chances.
A HARVEST OF LOVE by Marta Perry is the third book in the The Promise Glen series. It’s the fabulous story of Dinah Hershberger and Jacob Miller – the heartaches of their separate pasts, the here and now where they try to help each other, and the hope for a better tomorrow all with the help of one little six month baby named Isaac.
Dinah, a widow after the untimely death of her husband – Aaron, is struggling to come to peace with her past. Wondering if the heated argument she’d had with Aaron about their inability to start a family might have contributed to his accident and having to live with his last hateful words hasn’t been easy. Telling no one, she’s kept it all to herself. Although the doctor’s hadn’t thought so, she felt like it was her fault they were childless. Thinking she couldn’t have a child and not wishing to put that burden on anyone else, she’s determined to stay unmarried. She has the bakery and coffee shop, her family and her Amish church to keep her happy and busy. Can she be happy with tending to and loving the babies of family members and friends and it be enough to fill that longing for a baby?
Jacob feels like a failure. After the death of his parents, keeping his Dad’s harness shop running and taking care of Anna, his younger sister was his major responsibilities. Something he feels that he failed greatly at when he’s sister left home jumping the fence into the Englsch world without a word or a note left behind. If he couldn’t properly take care of her, how could he every think about a relationship and being responsible for someone else?
When Anna calls Dinah telling her that she desperately needed her to come by bus to Williamsport, while making her promise not to tell Jacob, she knew she had to do it. Maybe she could talk her into coming home to Promise Glen. After waiting a while upon arrival, Anna finally showed up – with a baby. She told Dinah he was her son, his name was Isaac and she couldn’t take care of him. Before she had a chance to talk to her, to make sense out of what was happening, Anna jumped into the passenger seat of a car and drove off. What was she going to tell Jacob? He was going to be upset that she didn’t take him with her for sure. One thing she did know, looking down into those big eyes of Isaac, she was already head over heels in love with this little boy – which she knew also was bound to be heartache for her in the end. But as her Grossmammi (grandmother) often said – “Hurting is the cost of loving.”
Yes, there was LOTS to figure out from where and how to tend to a little baby while both still holding down jobs to what all is needed to tend to a little one properly. Dinah having come from a large family where babies seemed to always be around was better prepared than Jacob, but Isaac wrapped himself around Jacob’s heartstrings and he knew immediately he would do whatever was needed to protect and care for this little boy, who had been named after his grossdaadi (grandfather), that had been put into his care. But life is not rainbows and roses without a few thunderstorms and thorns!
There’s attempts to find Anna, a loving family and community circle around embracing Isaac as one of their own, strangers demanding money, a teenage family member that’s too trusting for her own good and a very wise grossmammi (grandmother). Through it all A HARVEST OF LOVE is an equal balance of suspense and heartache and sweetness and love that will keep you turning pages on this wonderful story hoping and praying for a happily ever after ending. Being part a series, I can see the story of Dinah and Jacob popping up as a back drop in another book. Marta Perry weaves a story that’s full of love, faith, forgiveness and second chances that will have you loving A HARVES OF LOVE. Although part of a series, he can most definitely be read as a standalone book. However, once you read one of Marta Perry’s books, I’m sure you will be like me and searching out more of her books. Highly recommend this one and it gets my FIVE STARS.
A Harvest of Love is an emotional packed story written by Marta Perry. Her characters are amazing and each make the story come to life. I absolutely enjoyed this storyline but was very apprehensive in some spots. This story shows the reader about turning to family and good friends in the time of need. You can't help but put this book down at the end and find yourself happy and smiling. These characters really became like friends to me. This story is filled with family, faith, forgiveness, and acceptance. Such a feel good story
I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response and all opinions are my own. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.
Congratulations to Marta Perry for once again providing her readers with such an emotional and inspiring story.
A Harvest of Love by Marta Perry I read this as a stand-alone.
Dinah, a widow, owns a small coffee shop and bakery which is busy at times. The neighboring business is a harness shop owned by Jacob. One day Dinah gets a phone call from Jacob's sister Anna who left the Amish. She wants Dinah to come to Williamsport to pick up her baby and take him back home. What will Jacob think?
I was surprised to see that the English group that help the Amish in their transition into the modern world was portrayed as a helpful organization, a communication line for families in emergencies.
This was a sweet and sometimes intense story. It held my attention from beginning to end.
I was pleased to receive this book from the publisher and NetGalley. The review is my own.
Marta Perry returns to the Promise Glen in this third book. Dinah and Jacob have been neighbors for their entire lives. When Anna, Jacob's little sister who left the Amish life, gives her baby to Dinah, she and her family are ready to help Jacob raise little Isaac. The story is good and I liked the romance that bloomed between Dinah and Jacob. However, I felt that the story meandered some by trying to throw in some drama but never quite following through. Overall, though, a good Amish romance that kept me occupied for an afternoon.
I do so love reading books in series, because you can catch a glimpse of what happens to the other characters you were curious about and wondering what happened to them after "The End".
Dinah was definitely meant to be Isaac's mother, and Jacob his dad. So many times I just wanted to go "TALK TO EACHOTHER YOU TWO", but isn't that always the way with Romance novels? I really felt for Anna, who obviously loved her little guy but knew she had to give him to people who could provide the best life for him. It'll be wonderful to see how this new little family gets along in the next book too!

Dinah is a widow who rams a bakery, coffee shop! Jacob is her neighbor and runs a saddle shop. Jacob’s sister, Anna, left him and the Amish community. Anna calls Dinah at her stop and asks her to meet her! Anna gives Dinah her son, Isaac, and asks her to take him to Jacob yo raise! How will Jacob handle this? Why would Anna do this? Who is the father? How Dinah handle this?
A Harvest of Love by Marta Perry was an uplifting story of love, acceptance and forgiveness. Whether it be Amish or not, families have a way of uniting in times of crisis. I would highly recommend this book. .
This is the third book in the Promise Glen series. This is a Amish religious romance story and is very well written. I enjoyed the story and the characters
I rated the book 4.5 stars but rounded to 5 stars here and on other sites.
A HARVEST OF LOVE is the third book in THE PROMISE GLEN series, and it did not disappoint. We’re reunited with characters we’ve met before, along with many new ones. There are Amish businesses in the small town that are central to the plot and the story has a wonderful flow to it.
This is Dinah and Jacob’s story. Dina’s a widow, and her marriage wasn’t as happy as she’s let others think it was. Jacob’s sister has jumped the fence and gives guardianship of her son to him and Dinah. They have no idea where she is, let alone that she was pregnant. Jacob and Dinah have shops in town that share a common wall and are neighbors who have grown up together. The pair become emotionally involved due to their new responsibility. Neither thinks they are cut out for married life and a family, but that could change.
There are wonderful descriptions throughout the story that are both colorful and vivid. The story is filled with laughter and tears, as well as family and friends, all tied together by a baby who captures everyone’s hearts. This is an emotional read that really pulls at the heartstrings. Though there is some predictability to the story, it’s filled with enough surprises to make it enjoyable. Once again, the inclusion of the glossary of Pennsylvania Dutch words and phrases is a nice addition along with the recipes at the end of the book.
Ms. Perry has only hit my radar a short time ago. I love her writing and have added many of her books to my TBR pile. I can’t wait to delve into them all.
I rated the book 4.5 stars but rounded to 5 stars here and on other sites.
A Touching Story WIdow, Dinah Hershberger, and bachelor, Jacob Miller, are friends and neighbors and they also have adjoining businesses. Dinah is a widow who never had the blessing of having children of her own. Jacob has been living alone ever since his parents died and his sister, Annie, left. On the surface, Dinah and Jacob seem to be doing just fine. However, each one has a burden of guilt that he/she carries in silence. When a baby comes into their lives, not only does that baby have an impact on Dinah and Jacob's relationship, but also on the guilt that they've been carrying. A Harvest of Love is a touching story about love, faith, and forgiveness with touches of humor thrown in. It will definitely hold your attention and warm your heart. ****I received a complimentary copy from Berkley Publishing Group via NetGalley. All comments and opinions are strictly my own.
