Imagine organizing a small community to be able to survive a harsh lake effect snow-filled winter while fending off marauding gangs. Inside these pages, you won't have to imagine.

I must confess that I find most new (to me) authors through social media. This is one of those. I saw through people that I follow that this authors work was to their liking and since we have similar taste I thought why not. Then I saw that he was having a give away and I was one of the lucky ones. Our War is the first in a series about the Losers by Richard Maverick. The setting is very specific but the reason behind the situation is not. There is a very bad condition in the country, you could almost call it a civil war but it is not organized. The main character start out his day with gathering some supplies on his way home and on his way he stumbles onto a bad situation which leads to violence. I found the book interesting and well researched and it deals with some thoughts we all should ask ourselves today, when it come to who we are when the shit hits the fan. The main character has with a few friends built a society that is trying to be supporting themself and be ready for anything. I must say that the book has some qualities that many books like this don't. I must thank the author for sending me this copy as part of my prize. I can recommend his work and will continue reading this series.

Raw, gritty, violent, pertinent. A great read about one man’s struggle to keep his family and friends safe after a societal collapse leaves them living during a time without rule of law. The story starts with a bang and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout ther entire story, with one hell of a cliffhanger that will leave you speechless. Thank you so much for the opportunity to read your books Richard, and for the cigar recommendations, they are much appreciated!

Our War is a heartfelt and gripping story of preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. Unfortunately, a 7 of 10 worst does happen and the Losers band together to survive the disintegration of America as we know it. With no one else to rely upon they fall back on their training and a strict code which the group of about 100 must live by. Harsh but fair the story provides lessons on what must be thought through to do more than just survive physically.

Anything more would need to include spoilers which I will not share.

But this book and cheer for the Losers as I did.

Looking forward to book two.

While this may have been the authors first book and it led to some rough patches, being the first project allowed a good deal of authenticity for Richard to truly showcase his emotions and to help solidify his writing style. Having met the author like I have you will be able to take note of his blunt and Straightforward style that in a gritty novel of this type is a benefit. Suspense filled from the beginning through the final page. I flew through this book always looking forward to the next chapter. Give this book and this author a serious chance.

Full Disclaimer, I am personal friends with the author.

I thoroughly enjoyed the plot to this book. It was fresh, original and downright scary. After reading "Our War" and I more concerned about a civil war breaking out in this country and us having no idea why. My only criticism to the book was it did get a little clunky and choppy at times. Overall though, I fully enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the sequel.

Great read. It’s rough, gritty, and fast paced. Ignore the errors, stick to the story. It reminds me of Red Dawn and the first season of Walking Dead, minus the zombies. It’s a pulse pounding thriller hell bent on survival in a post war time with an unknown cause of disruptive life. It’s a fast read, and a telling story of survival. Doesn’t get any grittier than this! On to the next one!

The book literally starts with an explosion and doesn't let up from there! The premise is all-too-possible: a new civil war in America. The author doesn't blame it on anyone and only gives the point of view of the protagonist, Will, which makes the story even more real. No one knows what is going on, only that they must protect those closest to them. At that point, it doesn't seem like politics would matter, and the author does a great job making it feel like you're there with Will and the Losers.

There is a great mixture of action and development in the story as the author takes you from the immediate terror of the war starting to attempting to make the new world better by taking down violent gangs that popped up to fill the power vacuum. The mood of the book is ominous. No one knows who they can trust and peoples' baser instincts come to the fore, which is why Will and his crew of "Losers" are so great. They prepared for this and are doing their best to keep their families and friends safe and alive. When the action starts, though, good luck putting the book down! And the ending (don't worry, no spoilers!) was great and made me immediately want to start the sequel. Grab this book and read it!

The book is tightly written and a fast paced read. It’s written as if reading some one’s journal, and found it to be an enjoyable read. I rated it four stars only because of some editing issues and expected a little more backstory. Overall, however, it’s a fun read and look forward to Maverick’s follow on book.
