It's been five years since the Pulse, the mysterious event that led to the complete failure of the world's electrical grid and plunged society into permanent darkness.
THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES...
Nurse Lucy Goodwin, her brother Jack, and her young ward Norah now live in Promise, a small community that formed in the wake of the technological apocalypse.
Their lives are not easy, but they have food, water, weapons, and medical care. They are among the lucky ones in a world beset by lawlessness and starvation.
But after encountering a trio of mysterious bandits, Lucy and Jack learn that a new threat lurks on the horizon, one that could spell the end of their community ... and their lives.
Everyday life after the fall of civilization. I enjoyed the day to day work routines among the community of Promise. It’s nice to know things can start again with most adapting to the new normal of working together for the greater good. I’m glad they touched upon the healthcare crisis of COVID and the flu and viruses that can take out a community. Since there are no longer vaccines then of course the eradicated diseases will come back and life expectancy will be shorter like it was in the pioneer days. Lots to think about when your a survivor of a word fallen apart. The amount of communities was a delightful surprise and the farm market to trade was a nice touch. While these arnt the most exciting books on post apocalyptic times- I just can’t get attached to the characters - it is at least one of the more realistic.
So, I skimmed the first book, and made it to about 40% of the second. These are the reasons. I hate books that have most of the dialog, internally. There is very little character to character dialog. Secondly, it's tooooo descriptive. Not everything needs an adjective or a lengthy description. In addition, I lost count of how many pages were dedicated to the deceased daughter. Honestly, I have no idea why she continually was brought up. It added nothing to the plot. I won't be reading further.
This book takes the apocalyptical thriller to the next step--- showing life after the world-ending event. That's what makes this such an addictive page-turner. Lucy and her brother are not just trying to survive, they are fighting for their home and their extended family. The world David Kazzie creates is real and identifiable. The story is riveting and the action is extraordinary. This is exactly the kind of escapist fiction that I wanted to read. I highly recommend this.
The previous book left off after a harrowing escape from bad guys and I was disappointed that this jumps 5 years into the future. We get some flashback as to how the Promise community is formed, but we do miss a lot of that evolution. I do think in a scenario like this, you would get a group that finds it more expedient to simply oppress others to get what they need and this explores that. It is also a book where it is ill-advised to become too attached to characters.
I enjoyed book #1 Shadows, but this one lost me early on with the Covid-19 outbreak, again - 5 years AFTER the EMP. I'm not saying this story is bad, by any means, but I'm SO tired of hearing about Covid, day in and day out. Good grief! I REALLY don’t want to read about it too, when I'm looking for escapism. Not even in an apocalyptic setting. Hell, bring back the Swine or Bird flu, but PLEASE skip the damned Covid.
I was drawn into this book from the first sentence. A very good portrayal of what our world be like in the event of an EMP destroying the power grid. The characters were very believable. The book keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Can't wait for the last book in the series to come out!
Seemed like the author was just transcribing a season of the walking dead without the dead. I still found the book to be decent except for his leftists tendencies to insert blm and COVID mistakes as correct action. I will read the third book taking a deep breath every time he goes off the rails with his leftists assaults
Brilliant.. exceptional reads number 3 coming soon can’t wait. When the lights go out, planes fall, trains derail. Everything becomes chaotic. Then it becomes a fight for survival a fight to live. But always there is evil in someone who wants it all.
My only critique is the coincidental characters all meeting up for a second time. It took bit for Norah to make her statement and it was good to know the back history of Jack. Can't wait to read book 3
Good second book, adding secondary characters, themes and good speculation about long term society evolution, or perhaps one might say a return to feudalism and power. Good reflection on how what we consider a short distance - 30 miles, in a post machine world can be infinite.
When will I learn to check for the whole Trilogy prior to starting one? Hurry up and write David, I cannot wait to see what happens next! What a cliff hanger!
Thrilling, frightening; Not something I could read at a single sitting - needed quite a few timeouts after disturbing events; quite worth sticking with it!
