Court of Blood and Beasts

Rate this book
Before last night, if you’d told me that magic was real or vampires were real, I’d have laughed in your face. But now? Now, I know the truth.

They’re both real. Vampires of all kinds are after me, my mom is some kind of valkyrie… and I’ve got the magic. A magic everybody wants, including these all-too-real vampires. Some want to use me, some want to kill me, and some of them, some really hot, sexy ones, just want me.

Now, if I can figure out this magic, if I can cement the bonds of love and blood with three devastatingly handsome beasts, we might just survive long enough to carve out a place in the Courts of Blood and Beasts.

This one was okay for me. I didn't love it, I didn't hate it and kind of expected more of it from the way that it is hyped up throughout the internet. Max was just kind of a dull character and quite truthfully, I went in expecting way more heat and romance than what was there. I am also a bit over the whole "you know who I was and didn't tell me" narrative.

Max just turned twenty-one and all she wanted to do was continue her ordinary life working in her mom's bookstore and flirting with Noah. On the night of her birthday, she's always had the same nightmare - snow-covered mountains and men with red eyes. Except the dream on her twenty-first birthday is drastically different - more depth, more feeling, and more information. Suddenly, her life changes completely and everything she thought she knew goes out the window. Now she has magick powers and finds herself as the last of a species, killed out by wars with vampires and other creatures of the night. Protected by one coven and hunted by another, she finds herself drawn to three different men and pulled into a war she wants nothing to do with. And just when everything seems hopeless, those three men seem to be her only redemption.

This book took me a really long time to get through. The beginning was draggy and Max was not that great of a main character - she was whiny, indecisive, and obnoxious towards everyone. I really wanted to reach into a book and smack her; it literally killed me. I also really didn't enjoy the reverse harem trope that was a pretty big deal in this book. Maybe it's because I didn't feel the romance or maybe it was just most of the characters were flat and unappealing. The world-building was subpar at best, and while it was an interesting concept, wasn't done as well as it could be, which resulted in a flat, short, and blah book. The action was probably the best part of this, but even that didn't have the best pacing. It was slow, but it also was resolved really easily.

If you enjoy reverse harems strictly for the sex scenes and little emphasis on characters or plot, you'll probably enjoy this book. But if not, this wasn't really worth the time.

Max lives an ordinary life working in her mother's book shop until her twenty first birthday.
On that day, her mother gives her a present that awakens the true world to her... A world of magic and vampires.
She always just thought her mum was a little odd but turns out she is a type of Valkyrie.
Max has been given the magic and every type of vampire wants to get their clawed hands on it.
Some are out for blood, some are willing to play any game for this magic and some vampires just want her love.
A stranger to the magic and the world until now, Max has so much to learn and hopefully it can save her and the three vampires who worship her.

This was a shocking book which slipped from the mundane life to the fantastical.
It was a little slow to start but it is the best build up which then changes dramatically.
With action and heart pumping written scenes, this is a very entertaining read with a romance thrown in for good measure.
Perfectly paced after the first lull with three different types of vampires all wanting a certain conclusion.
A magnificent original story which transported me as the reader to this magical imagined world.

*SPOILERS*
I came into this review with a love for vampire romance and reverse harems, so I had some high expectations for what I was reading. While this was a good read and a different take on vampires it almost missed the mark for me.

While the general idea of the story was great, it ended up lacking. I felt that it was rushed and I was unable to connect with the characters as much, there was so much room for character growth, especially for Max. At fist it just seemed like her being whiney was just meant for the beginning of the book but even towards the end it felt like that was something that she was not going to overcome. She was bratty and whiney and refused to listen to those around her, the battle was also rushed. It really did not feel like much of a closure when it ended, basically everyone fought, it was bloody, the end. It was great that there was enough action to keep my attention, I just wished that I could have connected more with the characters and had more to their stories and relationships.

At first this book sad a little too slow going for me and I almost put it down onto the DNF shelf for good; but I kept with it and was glad that it picked up pace.

The speed love between Max and her guys is kinda funny. I mean she is telling them that she loves them after a few days and it isn't due to fated mate stuff. I do understand that the author need the characters to reach a believable emotional point in the plot, but it would call it battle-driven list, not love. If she was going to make it a fast-burn, should have used the work - around fated-mate destined love to make it feel more real. Other than that, everything just felt very forced like story was driving the character into having a threesome. There was no real mystery to this plot, all very predictable. You knew from almost the beginning that she would be killed if she didn't perform a blood act with a lord (we are only introduced to one lord who is very close to his second, so pretty sure it's going to be a RH).

I was on the fence about reading this work. I’ve been struggling to find vampire plots that hold my attention, this story was okay. I understand the female was going through a lot over the course of the story but she wasn’t the most memorable character for me. The author wrote with the intention of her to be this amazing character but I found the character to be a little flat. She was a little all over the place and seemed to be a bit self centered. The plot was decent and I enjoyed watching it progress over the story but at times the backstory would be a little confusing and hard to remember when references were made. The story just kind of ended and I was left unsure if this was a standalone or if there was another story in the works.

I give this three out of fives stars. The plot was good but the characters fell flat and seemed very childish at times.

Max was a normal 21 yo working in her mom’s bookstore until the night she literally woke up from a nightmare to find a stranger in her room. Instinctively, she blasted him with magic. Max and her mother ran to a safe house of a sort run by old friends...vampire friends. Max finds herself in the middle of a war that had been raging for centuries. Max finds she’s the last of her kind and everyone is out to get her to either use her or kill her.

The book starts off a little slow but once it gets going, the action never stops. The characterizations are filled out as we learn about them, just as Max does. The world of this book could be just out of sight.

It is a stand alone book and does have explicit sex scenes but a HEA with no cliffhangers, so fair warning. I do hope Ms. Rose does give us more in this world as I would definitely like to visit it again.

What is she?
On her twenty-first birthday Mackenzie’s mom gives her a beautiful necklace with a crystal in it. She has had re-occurring dreams her whole life bit that night she dreams of events that seem so real. About when she was little and she sees another woman who she calls mom and she has a dad. She wakes up terrified but her mom acts like it’s only nightmares. But when a vampire comes to kill her and she and her mom have to escape, she learns the truth about her identity. She’s the last of her kind and some will protect her but others want to kill her for her powers. And one especially psychotic vampire queen is very determined to gain Mackenzie’s powers. Ok let me start this off by saying the fmc annoyed me so much at certain points I nearly threw my tablet across the room out of pure rage that I couldn't reach into the book and smack her across the back of the head. That being said, this book drew me in and didn't spit me out until the last page. I ate this book up like a kid eats candy on Halloween. I definitely think anyone who enjoys paranormal romance will love this book and wouldn't regret giving it a go. But please, don't break your eReader out of anger just because the heroine is doing stupid crap. Because she definitely does some stupid crap and acts like a 2 year old who can't stay put and keep out of trouble.

This book was not at all what I was expecting, the storyline was not the usual vampire storyline we've all become accustomed to. Although the story started off well I thought the author missed the mark when she failed to give us a conclusion to their story after the battle was won, their story just ended. I redownloaded my copy in case I'd missed part of the book. I would have appreciated more depth to the characters and a different ending.

When I picked this up, I expected another typical paranormal romance. I was very surprised to get wrapped up in a twisted tale of deception, lost family, bloodshed, and lust for power. I really liked how the author wrapped the modern story into old legend to make it new again, particularly through the eyes of Max, the courageous heroine.

There was a good balance of action and romance, making this book a page turner. You know it’s a good book when you are sad when it’s over.

It's a different take than usual. I liked the general idea, but it really does fall flat in the end. A little more depth would have went a long way. This could've been made into a two parter if the author wanted to stay in a certain word count or day to heck with that and flesh it out and have repeat readers and give them some depth and not leave us feeling deflated at the end. I give it four because there were some good parts and it was unique. I volunteered to read this book via Booksprout.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Oh my gosh this story was just epic. I just couldn’t put this story down and I was just captivated by everything that was taking place. The author truly outdid herself with this story. This story just had my emotions all over the place and I am so sad to see this book end. I just can’t wait to see what’s next from this author.

Unexpected

The build up for the storyline was great. This is not the usual vampire story but in a good way there were just enough differences to consider it unique instead of absurd. What I didn't care for was how quickly the battle and ending came to be there was no "after " they won and the end....a good finale for me needs a bit of what happened then

I really enjoyed reading this book. I wasn't so sure at first; but the more I read the more I was intrigued. Although this was written like this was the only book; it wouldn't be a bad thing to see it turned into a series.

Max has strange nightmares every year on her birthday. On her 21st, she learns that they are real memories. Her entire life changes with this revelation. A fast paced romance with a feisty lead. Such a great romance, I didn't want to put it down!!

A fast paced vampire/supernatural story. The heroine Max is strong willed yet childish at times. The storyline itself is unique with the mages power in relation to vampires. It’s definitely a page turner as the action and events are quite fast paced, however the ending was abrupt.

Mackenzie has no clue who she is or what she is. On her twenty first birthday she received a crystal necklace for her birthday she has strong powers her mum kept everything from her and as she was trying to protect her. This was a fast paced read, but a good paranormal.

The world building is very unique and different from vampire mythology.. I am not sure if I fully believe the affection the FMC has for the MMCs (except Noah). She was already saying she loved them after a few words shared.

A good book. It was an interesting read, it took me a bit to get into it but I got more interested as it went along. In some parts the story felt rushed, over all a great read. This is a new author for me and I will be interested to read more from this author.

Love it

The story is beautiful and it gets into the story pretty quickly. The romance is steamy and it treats the polyamory like a natural option rather than a surprise or last result which is honestly really refreshing.
