THE SOUTH ALSO EXISTS

Rate this book
"We will fight for Venezuela, for Latin American integration and the world. We reaffirm our infinite faith in humankind. We are thirsty for peace and justice in order to survive as a species. Simon Bolivar, founding father of our country and guide of our revolution, swore to never allow his hands to be idle or his soul to rest until he had broken the shackles which bound us to the empire. Now is the time to not allow our hands to be idle or our souls to rest until we save humanity." - Hugo Chavez

very succinct, finished reading this is one sitting. There is a lot of hope in this collection of speeches for those looking for freedom and persisting in the daily for it.
This is both a rallying call and a promise of possibility. Loved it.

This collection of Hugo Chavez's speeches draws attention to the impoverishment of the South as it struggles to find stability away from the clutches of imperialist interventions. Chavez is a 'new leader' as he describes himself in one of these speeches. Still, his vision for the South is nowhere new: various struggles for independence, global treaties and efforts such as those made by the Non-Alignment Movement have all dreamt of a South economically, politically, and ideologically independent of the overbearing of the North. Chavez's speeches refer back heavily to these dreams, and the collection in this book reflects Chavez's passion and visionary far-sightedness. A short astute collection that can be finished in a sitting, the book could have greatly benefitted from an introduction to Chavez and his contributions to the world of socialist anti-imperialism.
