Imagine the author’s surprise to discover that her family descended from the most famous of all British royalty. From very respected nobility, all the way to George Washington’s line in America the stories unravel. Follow their amazing journey from ancient castles in Norfolk, England to Virginia plantations and into the wilds of Daniel Boone’s Kentucky where an ancestor met his death in a skirmish with Indians. This is a true historical account of her family’s rise and fall through 16 generations, beginning with the 1400’s.
With so much interest in genealogy these days, Elizabeth Wales went to work researching her family tree(s). In so doing, she discovered what many of us secretly hope to find: connections to people of some fame and/or notoriety. Following her own family back 16 generations gave her many such connections, including George Washington and the current Queen of England, Elizabeth II. There’s even a King Henry VIII connection or two. The lineage is lovingly set down in easy to understand prose. And to bring her ancestors to life, Author Elizabeth Wales has included portraits of many of the ancestors. Note: Mrs. Wales is an accomplished artist, among her many talents, and these portraits are photos of her paintings.
I found this book to be enjoyable and informative. Mrs. Wales has a lovely way of telling a story and although I am in no way related to the author I feel as though I’m part of her family. Her own descendants will be charmed to find their ancestry so lovingly portrayed.
As the author states in the book, she is now turning her efforts to the paternal side of the family (her husband’s line). And with a surname like Wales, there are sure to be some interesting characters in that line of the family.
Although this is a relatively short book and would be called a short story by some, there is so much information between the covers that this reader/reviewer needed several days to digest the information.
If you are a genealogy fan, or a history lover or biography lover, then give this book a try.
