Several years ago, I asked my class of Chinese PhD students in Beijing to write a persuasive essay based upon Robert Frost’s poem “The Road not Taken.” I asked them to engage with the final few lines of the poem, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” The students had to make a choice between the two roads, and then write an essay persuading themselves (as well as me, their professor) as to why they chose to take that road. My students immediately understood that Frost’s poem was a story about life and the choices we make for our career, our relationships, and even our ethics. I want to introduce you to the “Gift.” The Gift is given to those who recognize the great value of it, and then ask to receive it. At first, you may see it as a risk, but in the end, I hope that you will believe that it is a risk that you must take.
