Luke: Good News of Great Joy

Rate this book
A 10-Week Study for Women on the Gospel of Luke The angel said to the shepherds, “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people” (Luke 2:10). Born in a lowly manger, Jesus might not have been the messiah people expected, but he was the Messiah they needed. Join Lydia Brownback as she digs deeper into the book of Luke and answers the Who is this son of a carpenter who could preach, heal diseases, and cast out demons? Pointing to Jesus as the promised King of kings, Brownback shows how his earthly ministry is good news for all, especially the downtrodden, the hurting, and the outsider. The Flourish Bible Study series equips women to study the overarching storyline of the Bible book by book. Designed for individual or group use, each 10-week workbook features conversational teaching that aims to make in-depth Bible study accessible to women in all seasons of life, along with practical application questions and additional recommended resources.

We used this ten week study to lead us through the book of Luke this spring. The questions and commentary encouraged us to dig deeply and consider truths about the life of Christ that we typically skim over. The thesis is the joy that results from knowing and believing the Good News of Christ's life, death, resurrection and ascension.

Brownback's Flourish studies are so visually lovely to read and the pages provide ample room on which to write. I think this invites and enourages the Bible student to linger and dwell on the passages and the questions she asks. The study can be easily completed by those with limited time or biblical background. Although, the author provides many segways to take her more seasoned students deeper into themes and topics if they are so inclined. For the new Bible student or those with time constraints, this study guide is ideal. But also, for those who desire to go deeper, Brownback provides inspiration for discovering treasure droves.

I was particularly struck by how well the author leads her students to better grasp both the total humanity and complete divinity of Christ.

Luke: Good News of Great Joy” is a remarkable addition to the Flourish Bible Study series by Lydia Brownback, and my favorite so far! Like the other books in this series I’ve explored, it’s been a source of blessing, satisfaction, and inspiration.

Especially during the Christmas season, I make it a point to immerse myself in the book of Luke, remembering the significance of Christ’s birth and His ultimate sacrifice. This study not only allows me to revisit these timeless events but also emphasizes how His miracles from ancient times continue to impact and bless us today.

What sets this study apart is its in-depth examination of the Gospel of Luke, tailored especially for women. The questions encourage deep thought and help us connect with our faith on a deeper level. I can honestly say that I’ve never encountered a Bible study series that has enriched my understanding and knowledge of Scripture more than this series. The format, presentation, and the focus on spiritual growth are exceptional.

Now on my seventh Flourish book, I look forward to more illuminating experiences. If you’re seeking a Bible study series that combines depth, inspiration, and personal reflection, I recommend giving this study (and series) a try. It has truly been a blessing in my life, and I look forward to continuing this faith-filled journey with Lydia Brownback’s guidance.

First Line (Introduction): Good news of great joy—that’s what the angel proclaimed to some astonished shepherds one dark night in Israel.

I wish I liked her Bible study guides more. They tend to not be as deep as I wish, and focus more on observation than on interpretation and connecting the accounts to the Old Testament and other related passages - so I end up using other resources to complement the study. There's also somewhat of a negative tone to her application questions - so I end up rephrasing/rewriting some of what she says. Her theology is sound; her studies just aren't my jam.
All that said, the book of Luke is FABULOUS to study during Lent with a group of women, which is what we did. Our conversation and exploration of the life of our compassionate, women-affirming, bold Savior was wonderful.

These Bible studies are excellent and this one on Luke does not disappoint. Lydia Brownback asks in-depth questions that get you digging into the text. She has commentary that helps explain difficult passages, as well as charts and maps. Because Luke is such a long book, she does skip discussing some passages in order to fit the study into 10-weeks. However, you should still read all of the passages, and can discuss those passages in a Bible study setting.

3.5 a good study for those learning to study the Bible but not deep enough for me. I wish the publisher’s had asked her to write this book in two parts so she could help her audience really dig into the rich content of Luke.

LOVED the gospel of Luke and loved my Bible study group. Learned a huge amount. Don’t agree with all Lydia said in this book and I think this book could be better with less fluffy commentary and more actual info.
