When he was a child, Mikey Rhodes disappeared. Lost in the land of Terrenos, he grew into a warrior of legend and waged war against the God King Lore--a war that even ravaged Earth. Now, that war is over, and Mikey is victorious. But no victory is without sacrifice...
Since 2014, Joshua Williamson and Andrei Bressan's fantasy epic BIRTHRIGHT has enthralled readers, and now it is time for the Rhodes family to embark on one last, thrilling adventure.
I've really enjoyed this from start to finish. I wasn't actually expecting it to be over already. Well, I mean...ten volumes. It's had a good run, I guess I just thought we had a few more stories to tell.
This picks up after the battle from the last volume has been over for quite some time, and all of the characters are dealing with the fallout from the magical war. The title Epilogue feels right because this was all about wrapping up the loose ends. It wasn't perfect, but it was sweet. And I love that it ended on a high note.
I got the impression that Williamson felt like he might want to come back and revisit this world and these characters again someday, because the ending feels open to that sort of scenario. If so, I'll get in line and hand over my money.
It deals with the fallout of the war as Mikey has to fight the monsters still roaming and the black market always has scope for post war stuff and the battle there is fun. Good convos with Boomer. And we finally check in on with Brennan and where he has been which is interesting and finally the rescue of the parents at great cost and that was an emotional reunion but yeah the cost was heavy and finally an ending worthy of applause when the whole story comes together.
This was a great volume and was quick paced but deals with the fallout in fun manner and showing everything has a price but its worth it. And I really liked how the artist let loose and he drew so many cool scenes and all and finally the ending connected to the first issue and hits home the concept of family. Ahh great volume and sad to see it end but loved the whole story all the way through and probably one of the best comic runs I have read!
A very entertaining High Fantasy that is done completely by one author and one artist. Don't see that very often for a 50 issue run. I'm surprised this series hasn't had an oversized, hardcover edition but perhaps we'll see one in the future.
I think maybe I just lost interest and only kept going to see the end and not because I actually enjoyed it anymore. Other people liked this though so maybe I just wasn't in the mood or it wasn't for me.
Having taken a break from this series after reading the first seven volumes, I returned to finish the whole thing. Sadly, absence has not made my heart grow fonder for this. I know this series has its fans; I just wish I enjoyed this as much as they did. Alas.
After last volume, I was curious as to what was left to say. There was the cliffhanger from last time of course, but the war was won, and the characters were almost at their happy endings. But it's the characters that drive these final five issues, really finishing off their arcs and bringing everything to a symmetrical close. Birthright's had some ups and downs, but it all comes together at the end very nicely.
I can't believe that this series is finished?! We've been reading it for the last few years and while I felt it kinda lost its way in the middle, I have throughly enjoyed this take on the 'human falls into another world becomes chosen one' trope. The use of family and the struggle between free will and fate was done really well too. It's a fitting end and looking forward to seeing what the author comes up with next!
While it might not be what I would have expected I can appreciate that Joshua Williamson decided to do a bit more of a scaled back ending then a big bombastic one
Brennan is obsessed with looking for a way to bring his parents back from Terrenos. Mikey, now more distant than ever because of his parents' predicament, and Rya who still loves him are cleaning up Lore's remaining forces on Earth. The area where Lore tried to invade the Earth is cut off from the rest of the world by the government, but everybody still knows what happened.
The only important bit is that Brennan has a way to get his parents back to Earth, but he and an ally of theirs need to stay in Terrenos in their stead. After a bit of crying and a cringy selfie, it's hugs and kisses, then everyone retires to their homes.
That was a hell of an epilogue. By far the most boring. I dare say it's the only boring volume, though it tries to add some fights, a few 2-page vistas, blood and gore. All that soul-searching the characters go through is the definition of bore-fest for me. I already read how hard their lives were. They don't have to rub it in. Just walk it off!
When they say "Epilogue" for the title of this Volume, they really mean it. With the defeat of Lore in the last Volume, the only thing left is for our heroes to solve how to save their parents (who were left in Terrenos) and wrap things up. And so they do.... Brennan works to destroy all the remnants of magic left in our world and makes the sacrifice to stay in Terrenos so his parents can come back home to Earth. Mikey and Rya are able to raise Mya, and even have another one on the way. AND Terrenos has begun to heal from Lore's abuse and actually is kind of more like a paradise now. All in all, a good button up for the story. Really impressed with most of the run and with it only being 10 Volumes (50 issues), I can recommend it as a short read to those who want a good, complete story. Recommend.
Fairly underwhelming ending, but far from bad. This comic's great weakness of having scattershot focus in spite of its massive (for an indie comic) runtime comes back to haunt it - Brennan's arc still feels blunted and rushed - the argument he and Mikey have about the gate issue is offscreen! Why would you have that be offscreen?
We got some good character moments with Mikey and Boomer of all characters, some solid ultraviolence, and Kallista gets her chance to burn bright one last time before the end of the series. Kallista's up there with Lore with 'character I wish had gotten more pagespace'. Maybe cut 5 of the Five Mages issues so we can get some pagetime with characters who are actually interesting. 7.5-8/10.
7 years. I've been reading this series for 7 years. Really kind of wish I would have compressed that to like a year, I probably would have enjoyed it even more. This last one I couldn't find anywhere. I think it popped up on Ebay for some huge price once or twice. Local stores didn't have it. Then I got these weird gift points from work that only worked on Amazon and there it was. Maybe it was always there (I don't normally use Amazon).
Perfect ending to a great series! This really wrapped up everything and added some extra emotion to the whole story.
The end of Birthright is here, and it's a fitting end for where the story has gone. If I'm being honest, I was feeling reluctant towards the direction this story was taking. The story has great character interactions with a lot of heart as everyone races to the goal, and the artwork practically glows. The epilogue of this epic fantasy series ends and it is full of just as much emotion and family as ever. Overall this probably my favorite Joshua Williamson comic and definitely worth checking out.
This is a review of the series as a whole. This comic achieves everything it set out to be. A high concept, high fantasy epic. It's like Narnia and Peter pan meets games of thrones. At times the pacing fluctuated, but only minor, and while the characters all go through their own arcs there isn't too much dimension to them, more filling archetype roles. This series is definitely about its theme and concepts and the payoff at the end is rightly satisfying. Akin to the last airbender. If you want a world to get lost in for a while then you found it.
Very good finale to this original and exciting series.
I haven’t read any volumes after #6 but nonetheless enjoyed this final part of this comic book fantasy series. It’s not hard to work out what has happened before and the main characters all appear and are developed further. It’s entertaining and nicely illustrated and the whole series is well worth the time and effort.I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
Williamson & Bressan end their epic fantasy series with a bit of a whimper. This volume is fine but could have easily been condensed into two issues added onto the last volume as we get everything wrapped up. It was nice to see the family finally figure everything out and get to breathe. Bressan's art was still unbelievable. Overall, I enjoyed how the series wrapped up but it seemed unnecessary mostly. The series overall was completely entertaining though.
Not a terrible end to a totally middling series. Most of the fantasy tropes and shtick in these books wore off really quickly for me, so I'm glad we're though. I had way more fun shit talking it on goodreads than actually reading it.
For fans of: families that need to stick together for like 1,200 pages and mostly do exactly what you expect them to.
A pretty well done ending even though I kind of wished they didn't add that little twist but I do like that Mikey and the rest have to deal with the aftermath of Lore's invasion and that even though they defeated the big bad guy there were still consequences to these events. But still a good ending as everyone has their stories tied up even if there are some costs to it.
Not strictly necessary, but it was nice to wrap things up for everyone. This was a series that never quite lived up to its premise for me, but I did enjoy it. And it looks like the door may be open for some future adventures at some point.
Great things have to end but I will say that it was fun while it lasted, This series between story and Art was well worth the investment. Do not try to read it out of order but the investment in the books will be worth it to you. This was a Good Read. Well Done Creators Thank You.
I did not care much for the story and characters of this series, but god-damn, the artstyle and creature design is on a level of its own. Phenomenal look, incredible monsters, beautiful colors.
