I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Fresh Paint is a unique book by two artists to help you nurture, find and grow your own unique style as an artist. The book is supportive of you creating 100 small paintings using different styles and mixed media to help you discover what your more comfortable with and more inspired by.
This book is truly inspirational and I lived the photographs included throughout of all the projects and types of art as the book progresses.
These two women have a fantastic idea to help aspiring artists nurture their hobby, passion and talents and I for one can't wait to start some of these!

Fresh Paint is a wonderfully inspiring book by Flora Bowley & Lynzee Lynx based on a workshop the two have created online. The book is a journey to discovering your own style through creating 100 small art pieces. As you embark on the journey they give you different perspectives and ways of approaching the journey.

There's a short section on supplies but unlike many other books, the encouragement is to use your own stash and even experiment with unusual ways to make marks like vegetables, etc. There's a lot of encouragement in this book to spend time exploring your world, your roots, your own natural way of being and adding joy to the process of creating. They take both an outside in and an inside out perspective to discovery and research.

The two authors have differing styles and so do many of the students whose work they share in each chapter to give you a wide range of examples and possibilities. I am confident that if you worked with this book's kind, generous and joyful guidance and spent time creating the 100 pieces of art that you would be well on your way to finding your own unique creative style.

with gratitude to edelweiss and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is an open-ended challenge to embrace your unique style by completing 100 paintings. There are writing prompts, scavenger hunts, and stamping making tasks along with other ideas to offer you a way to get creative. Some of the photos in the book were too avante-garde for me. The photos would be focused on hands or have the heads missing from from people or be shots of paints or tools from an angle that I found confusing. I never really grasped why the author's chose 100 for the amount of paintings you need to do. A lot of of the techniques weren't new to me, but they were explained in an exciting way that I might not have explored before. There were more mixed media tips than I care for in a demonstration book themed on painting. This is the second Flora Bowley book I've read and I will say it felt "on-brand".

This book posed an intimidating challenge -- 100 small paintings! interrogate your use of color, shape, design, materials, etc?! "Discover Your Unique Creative Style Through 100 Small Mixed-Media Paintings" -- and at first I was dubious, but now that I've finished I want to jump into those hundred paintings right now. I'm actually rather disappointed that I have to go and make dinner instead. Adulting is hard sometimes.

I loved the example paintings throughout, and found the exercises insightful and brimming with possibilities. My excitement grew with each chapter and new idea. I also really loved the tip of cutting up large watercolor paper to paint on. First, because that would never have occurred to me, and second because I actually have giant watercolor paper and I've been wondering what I would do with it.

I have been making a mental list of the supplies I will need to start. I have a lot of them already -- embroidery floss, glitter, various paints, pens, markers, colored pencils, etc... But what I don't have are acrylic paints (I sold mine from school when making room for my baby several years ago). I DO however have a better understanding of the colors I like than I had in art school, and a lead on the colors I will need to get started.

I'm so excited. I have been wanting to get back into acrylic painting, but I was laboring under the impression that I needed to have canvases or panels, an easel, and the room to store those things (which I don't have). But. Paper I can definitely do.

I also love to browse my local independent art supply store and the idea to purchase one color or pen or other small thing to add to the paintings with each trip is brilliant. A whole list of supplies? Expensive and intimidating. But I always come out with a few things anyway.

Another tip I found brilliant is the idea of working on several paintings at once, and pulling them out and adding more layers and details as inspiration strikes. I've never tried that, but I really want to try.

If you're at all interested in mixed media painting, this book is a must and I would definitely recommend it - especially if you're trying to develop your own style and color palette. I will be purchasing a hard copy to refer back to as I work on my paintings.

Originally posted on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

Fresh Paint is a cheerfully exuberant art workshop in book form with tutorials by Flora Bowley & Lynzee Lynx. Due out 17th Aug 2021 from Quarto on their Quarry imprint, it's 128 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats (ebook already available).

Throughout much of history, people have been taught that they learn by copying. This approach has applied to everything from representational art, sculpture, writing, even scientific methods. We're not encouraged to develop a unique style before mastering the basics (and often not even after).

The authors here have a fresh approach to facilitating readers/students in doing some guided creative exercises in order to find their own unique style. The authors place a lot of emphasis on honesty, exploration, creative joy, and discovery. There's a short intro with basic advice on gathering tools and supplies and setting up a creative space. The basic items they recommend should be readily available and relatively inexpensive. That's one thing I liked a lot about the authors' approach - they don't rely on expensive and exotic materials - they emphasize that the important inspiration and creativity will come through the students themselves (and use some neat guided techniques for finding inspiration internally and from the world around us).

The following chapters include well written specific tutorials with prompts for creative exploration. The tutorial exercises include clear color photographs with captions. Many of the tutorials also have galleries of student work. Most also include some writing prompts to help students focus on expanding their comfort zones with untried (or tried and discarded) methods and materials.

Through the process of creating 100 small works, the student will build up a stash of inspiration which can be referred to and expanded on later.

The book feels like (and apparently is) a workshop in book form, based on the authors' online courses.

Five stars. This is a well written, honest, *fun* course on creativity and building up an inspiration gallery of small mixed media works.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I really enjoyed this book, it was a quick read with lots of inspiration. I decided to start my 100 mini painting series, 12/100 done! I enjoyed a lot of this book, however there wasn’t a lot of technique or prompts that are not “main stream”. It definitely broke me out of my creative “funk”

Fresh Paint by Flora Bowley and Lynzee Lynx does have some good techniques for newer artists. Creativity can find inspiration in many different forms and we shouldn't allow fear to hold us back from trying new things. Using unorthodox art supplies can be incredibly beneficial in our creativity. However, beyond that, the book tends to focus way too much on getting in touch with your feelings and meditating. The overexaggerated neo-zen messages took up more of the book than actual paint techniques, preventing me from ever handing this over to a student. I recommend books more focused on techniques.

This is not your typical art book. You are not given exact instructions on how to do specific projects. Instead, you are offered a variety of prompts, exercises, and philosophies to consider.

This book focuses on creativity and how to develop your own unique style. If you follow the guidelines provided by the authors and create 100 small paintings, you will be well on your way to discovering your artistic preferences and specialties.

I like the way the written exercises and prompts encourage you to go outside of your comfort zone and try new techniques with new materials. There are no mistakes when you are expanding and exploring your artistic skills. This book offers a framework that will lead both beginners and experienced artists to consider a fresh outlook and mindset.

One of my favorite ideas from this book is to let your ancestry and family traditions inspire your art. I hope to let my German ancestry and my rural upbring come out in my future art projects.

The ambitious goal of creating 100 small paintings is a bit overwhelming but I am sure it can be done with some gentleness and dedication. I read a digital copy of this book and plan to order a print copy so I can dive in a little deeper.

Highly recommended.

FYI ~ I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley.

This book was a mixed bag for me- lots of vague mindfulness in the beginning, some brief tutorials with materials and techniques, and lots of examples of student work, showcasing a wide variety of styles. The most beneficial element of the book for me were the few "Writing Inquiries" scattered throughout the chapters. I appreciated how they asked more specific questions to provide the artist/reader with personal revelations. I also benefited from the chapter on incorporating inspiration from other artists. I had hoped that there would be 100 prompts for small paintings as the subtitle infers, but it turns out to be a challenge from the authors to create a collection of 100 based on the ideas generated from the practices in the book. I can see how this can work, especially if an artist creates several pieces from each section since they are more broad in their scope rather than specific prompts. A useful book that I plan to refer back to when I need to tap into a deeper well of creativity.

This is an interesting book. It is more for those who love to paint than any other type of craft. The artists really emphasize working in studies to get to know your supplies and also getting to know yourself and finding your style. This book was interesting, but since I am not really into painting, I didn’t get as much out of it as others will. Yes the projects presented are mixed media, but still heavy on the painting. And while I may not find this book the best for me, I do recognize it’s value and think it will go out quite a bit in a library.

I have never painted in my life, yet I was excited to pick up this book! I knew that these two would have so many tips to share that I could apply to my own creative practice, which is writing, and that was true! I actually feel like they invite this broader application by how they encourage you to dig into your own interests and life as a well to mix and match from. I think this book has something for every creative person (which is all of us)!

Self-directed learning with books is not always easy. Although I did find this book brought much happiness in setting goals, learning to quiet the day by leaning inward rather than travailing the rocky coast, and ultimately creating space to paint. Navigating color, working with different materials, gathering inspiration, and working out your artistic style, through written inquiry and studies.

Format is easily navigable. Prompts you to explore without drawing the map.

Went through this book a couple of times, the authors create a nice structure for creative engagement to help you find your artistic style (voice). The premise is to create 100 small paintings and over time with a variety of approaches you could develop your own voice. I think this would be a great resource for folks just getting into connecting more with your creativity.

Read all the way through this first before starting the exercises. I've got Flora's other art books and this book is just as inspiring as her intuitive painting ones. After a break away from my art practice, I've been struggling a little to gain momentum redeveloping my art habit again, this book has helped rekindle my fire and I can't wait to get started with my 100 mini paintings.

On the way to your own style
Creative influencer, workshop leader, artist, and author Flora Bowley presents the book "Fresh Paint. Discover Your Unique Creative Style Through 100 Small Mixed-Media Paintings" together with fellow artist Lynzee Lynx. The book was published by Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry. Bowley states: "I co-created Fresh Paint with my dear friend and collaborator, Lynzee Lynx, after years of hearing a collective desire from our students to create paintings that were more personal, unique, and true to them - a natural progression for most makers" (p. 9). The book is divided in seven sections: 1) Our Philosophy, 2) Setting the Stage to Create, 3) Gathering Inspiration from Your Internal Landscape, 4) Gathering Inspiration from Your External Landscape, 5) Expansion with New Materials, 6) For the Love of Color, and 7) Incorporating Inspiration from Other Artists. The goal of the book is that student artists find their own voice. To further this there are 100 paintings as a challenge to "do the work" (p. 17). I like it that the authors underline the fact that painting does not have a linear approach but that artists can "circle back" (p. 18-19). This book is more than a book about painting. It is also an encouragement toward the right mindset for being creative. The samples form students in the galleries throughout the book, the tips, and writing inquiries are a help in this regard. I recommend the book for beginners and advanced artists who do not only want to copy the work of others but want to develop their own unique style for their mixed-media art.
The complimentary copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley free of charge. I was under no obligation to offer a positive review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
