Once a professional juggler and fire eater, Tom Taylor is a #1 New York Times Bestselling, multi-award-winning comic book writer, playwright and screenwriter.
Well known for his work with DC Comics and Marvel, Taylor is the co-creator of NEVERLANDERS from Penguin Random House, SEVEN SECRETS from Boom Studios and the Aurealis-Award-winning graphic novel series THE DEEP. Taylor is also the Head Writer and Executive Producer of The Deep animated series, four seasons of which is broadcast in over 140 countries.
He is perhaps best known for the DC Comics series, DCEASED (Shadow Awards Winner), NIGHTWING (nominated for 5 Eisner Awards), SUPERMAN: SON OF KAL-EL (GLAAD Award Nominee), INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US, SUICIDE SQUAD, EARTH 2 and BATMAN/SUPERMAN as well as Marvel's FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN, ALL NEW WOLVERINE, X-MEN: RED, DARK AGES and SUPERIOR IRON MAN. Taylor is also the writer of many Star Wars series, which include STAR WARS: INVASION and STAR WARS: BLOOD TIES (Stan Lee Excelsior Award winner). Taylor has written for Marvel, DC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, IDW Publishing, Boom Studios, Wildstorm, 2000 AD and Gestalt Comics.
Tom Taylor has written some fantastic stuff, and despite his impressive portfolio, this Wolverine run is some of the best he has to offer. Whilst it doesn't include any kind of origin story for Laura, it is perfectly understandable and enjoyable regardless of previous investment and knowledge. Impressively, none of the arcs are anything less than satisfactory, with most being either good or great. The protagonist is absolutely the standout here thanks to Taylor's ability to juggle her complexity whilst also sprinkling in humour and well placed goofiness. If you aren't a fan yet, you will be after this.
I'm a huge "X-23" fan, so I was extremely nervous about this series. Laura taking over the Wolverine title is very exciting and a natural path for her character, but I'm skeptical when someone is writing her who isn't either Craig Kyle or Chris Yost. That said, there is no need for Laura fans to worry because Tom Taylor writes her beautifully.
Laura has always had a certain way of speaking, a way that shows just how logical and socially awkward she is. But she's been trying to embrace society for years now; it would only make sense that her way of speaking has evolved. Tom Taylor is the first writer to maintain Laura's voice while incorporating elements of modern speaking. Other writers have tried and failed, and those series can be ignored. This one should definitely not be.
The art here is also fantastic; one of my favorite art styles I've seen recently. It meshes very well with the plot, which is also top notch. Laura may be Wolverine now, but her X-23 past is what drives this story forward. It was very interesting seeing new and old pieces of Laura's history.
This volume is easily 5/5 stars! It's the best story featuring Laura that's been published in years, since her X-Force run ended in 2010. For fans looking for a strong female lead in comics, I highly suggest picking up this title and the previous ones featuring Laura co-written by Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost (X-23: Innocence Lost, X-23: Target X, New X-Men, and X-Force).
Review copied from Volume 1, but applies to the entire omnibus. The entire thing is so good!
I love everything about this series, and I have ALMOST all the variants for the whole run- it's that special to me.
Taylor took one of the most traumatized characters in Marvel, and managed to flesh her out into a real character with believable emotions and growth. Building on the groundwork laid by Liu in her X-23 runs, Laura finally finishes developing a 3-dimensional identity beyond being a weapon, truly finding her place with people who love her and people she can let herself love, conquering the old X-23 to finally become not only Wolverine, but Laura Kinney, a real and full person.
This whole series was so impactful in moving Laura forward in new and interesting ways that subsequent feature series have been a tremendous letdown to me. It seems other writers haven't quite figured out what to do with Laura yet and would rather have her go back to being a mindless weapon instead of a real human (well, mutated human) with agency and dreams.
If I could give this book a 6th star just for blessing us with Gabby and Jonathan the Actual Wolverine, I really would.
The most interesting Wolverine has been in a long time. I'm a big fan of X-23 and Tom Taylor has a good handle on Laura's voice but there's room for improvement. I had a great time finishing this series. Laura as Wolverine has been one of my favorite runs. Taylor has done solid work here. The issue moves well and future laid out in this book looks very interesting. My only problem with this final arc is that it was short. We could have set up a lot more and flushed out the events. I couldn't help but be underwhelmed by the end of All-New Wolverine. Its final arc began with a lot of promise, but part three of Old Woman Laura just falls flat for me. Maybe because I just didn't want the book to end it feels unsatisfying, but it was also quite anti-climactic. Overall though its characters are charming and likable, the finale is tense and dramatic, and the visuals look good. Normally when a series I love closes, I feel a bit of loss, maybe even betrayal, but this was a fun ride and it's definitely worth a read.
Such a fun book. I just wish the art was more consistent and that we got more of a wrap up to the ‘sword’ arc rather than waste time on a random jont with the guardians. The main new character, Gabby is great, she is like the Marvel equivalent of Zoe from Rachel Rising.
Really fun, quick read. Several good storylines, a lot of focus on character growth. Never wanted to set it down, always eager to pick it up. I'm read it to cover to cover over a weekend. Not an earth-changing book but a quality fun read.
Amazing run by legendary writer Tom Taylor, Huge fan of all of his work and this didn’t disappoint. would recommend to anyone wether they are familiar with the character or not
Let me get this out of the way first, i am a huge Wolverine fan, he always was my very favorite X-Men, so also one of my favorite Marvel heroes, and i wanted to read this run for quite some time. Tom Taylor knocks it out of the park with this one for real. This has to be one of the most fun, fast, original takes on Wolverine that i ever read, and it really was a blast, i am just sad it it over, but man what a cool book. X-23 or Laura Kinney aka The New Wolverine, is a dope character for sure, and this omnibus has no filler only good stuff. We see Laura in Madripoor, with Doctor Strange, The Wasp, in space with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and with Spider-Gwen. You have Sabretooth, The Brood, Taskmaster and Civil War ll , but also Spidey, Deadpool and Old Man Wolverine. We see her with a group of Wolverine's old and new and i already want more of Jonathan the Wolverine 😂 we see her in the future with a cool what if story against Doctor Doom and man did i already say this run is a blast ! Has to one of the most consistent omnis out there. The artwork is good, the stories range from fun to drama to lots of action, this is only my second book from Taylor after his Injustice omnibus, but the man can write for sure.
Tom Taylor is the best writer in the business today for traditional superhero fun, and this omnibus collects his entire run on All-New Wolverine. This was one of the best Marvel books of recent years, and it's great to have it on this format.
The first and last arcs are particularly superb. Unfortunately, subpar art pretty much ruins the Kimora arc in the middle of the book, but Taylor consistently avoids standard revenge stories and finds new facets of Laura's character to explore.
Tom Taylor does some great things in this massive collection of the entire All-New Wolverine series. He made Laura want to be more than what she was made to be and thrive to live up to what Logan wanted for her. The best part of the book was clearly the introduction of Gabby. She's a phenomenal character. Her humor and heart are worth the price of admission alone. I really enjoyed the family aspect of the book but I did think it relied too much on some old connections to the past without forging something new. The art throughout was mostly good. Overall, a very good book.
I only recently got back into reading some comics via collected editions such as this omnibus. I really enjoyed this run and exploration of this character overall. If you’re looking for some really strong art you’ll probably want to look elsewhere (the first arc and Orphans of X are pretty good, but everything else is just alright), but I grew to really enjoy this character. It’s a worthwhile read and I hope to read up on her current adventures in the Hickman-era X-men books soon.
Fun read and a good run overall. Laura is an amazing character and I’m glad she got to experience this run. As a big fan of her character I liked all the callbacks they had to her earliest appearances. My favorite arcs were “Orphans of X” and the “Civil War II” tie-in with Old Man Logan. The Deadpool & Spider-Gwen one-off crossovers were also fun too. Wasn’t really sure about the final arc being an alternate future story but I think it worked overall.
This book is just what the dr ordered. Action, drama, humor and fun. Pure unadulterated fun! Tom taylor is quickly becoming my fav writer! I won't spoil the book, and just say that it's rare to have a book as lengthy as this without any weak issue! Many try and mostly fail. This omnibus delivered everything i could have hoped for! This is wolverine done right.
Fast, fun, wholesome, progressive, joyful: this is exactly what the doctor ordered! I needed this.
My only disappointments are that there are not more issues, and that as much Deadpool & Gabby as we got ... I wanted so much more. (I would absolutely sign up for a Tom Taylor Deadpool -- I think he really nails the humor.)
FULL REVIEW *Spoiler Free*- https://youtu.be/p1RSUDXLtFs Eh.. It's not that good (proceeds to duck for cover) OVERALL RATING: 3.25 stars Art: 3.5 stars Prose: 3.75 stars Plot: 3 stars Pacing: 3.25 stars Character Development: 3 stars World Building: 3 stars Disappointing given the mostly universal praise of this series... It's alright but not a must buy at all...
Great story about overcoming your past, and how that’s not just a one time event, but repeatedly putting in the hard work instead of picking the easy choices. Loved to read Laura’s journey, but I also really loved the supporting cast. Gabby and Jonathan are two new characters that were instant hits for me. Art was pretty great too: very clean and colorful.
This is such an entertaining collection of stories! It's fast paced from start to finish with enough action to keep you going from page to page. Probably the most consistent Marvel omni I've read in an while.
This is a book about character development/growth and character interactions with great humor mixed within. You don't need prior knowledge to enjoy this story.
Not a big fan of this, unfortunately. Her costume redesign was impressive. The story and art were both fine, but did not make any sort of lasting impression.
