I have no idea how this series is still good at this many volumes. Bonus points for an excellent depiction of an American that isn't a raging stereotype and a Yona of the Dawn reference.

Review covers chapters 287 - 294

Not really a lot happening in this one unfortunately, and after all of the emotions of the last volume I was expecting for things to get epic, but they sadly did not. We DID get to see Kyoko having fun at what looks like a Disneyland parody, and getting to meet a real princess though, and also got to meet a new family member of a certain someone, but that's about it? 8'D

Also I am very confused by that cameo in 293/294. What the heck is happening there? XD

Chapter notes below for personal reference: (potentially spoiler heavy)

Nakamura's Tokyo Crazy Paradise will likely always remain one of my favorite manga. But this latest series of hers is really starting to drag. We were finally starting to get some resolution in recent volumes but now we're fully bumped back to square one and once again returning to the movies side of the story. It's not nearly as captivating as the relationships and I'm finding it harder and harder to stay invested in the story as a result.

Story: Ren gives Kyoko a ticket to "Disneyland" to go with Kanae. Along the way, she recognizes one of her past directors and says hi - only to discover that he has an American friend who he hopes Kyoko will show around Disneyland. Kyoko obliges, of course, but it turns out that Sarah may just have a very personal connection to Ren.

This volume is mostly about character building Sarah, all with slow hints about her being intimately involved in Ren's life. The scenes at Disneyland were cute but mostly about Sarah being able to eat a lot - which isn't that interesting after the fourth instance. We get a bit more reveals by the end but honestly, I felt like I could have skipped the entire middle and not missed anything at all.

The last chapters were about the movie that Kyoko is doing and how Kyoko doesn't love Ren any more but has turned her love into hate for some reason. This volume was particularly hard to follow and I was scratching my head in puzzlement all the time. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Great volume! I was so shocked to find out who Sarah was! Damn she looks hella young.

The YONA OF THE DAWN REFERENCE WAS EVERYTHING!

And Kanae as Jaeha? *NOSEBLEED*

While the texting back and forth between Kyoko and Ren was super cute, I wish there had been some in-person interaction between them in this volume. After the excitement of the last volume, that was a bit of a let down. We also didn’t get to see Kyoko’s conversation with Ren that ended the last volume.

We get to meet a couple new characters we’ve only ever heard of before - director ogata’s father Hirotaka and Ren’s mom(!!!) Juliena, who for some reason has a disguise known as Sarah that Ren recognizes by that name. It makes sense that Ren’s mom would come to try to see him, but I don’t really get why she has a set disguise like that. Also, why did she change her mind about seeing Ren in person? Does she know about Kyoko’s relationship with him? Kyoko running into them at the park was a coincidence, so she couldn’t have planned that part.

The other part I’m confused about is this Route drama Ren (and Moko??) will be doing in the US. Why is it so mysterious? And what’s up with that director and his strange costume, pet squirrel, and sudden stage fight with Ren? Also, we’ve heard about about this “Prince” Cedric guy but what is his relation to Ren and why wouldn’t they risk them meeting right now? Is he Ren’s cousin or something? Or part of the reason Ren was so distraught when he was younger?

Also, what is with Kyoko’s co-star’s Ren obsession/hatred, and that Kyoko senses he seems to have chilled out about it because something good happened to him? Is he also doing the Route project? He had an acorn like Ren received after he fought with and met the director. How and why is this project going to be such a big deal? Unfortunately this is a volume where I end up with more questions than answers.

Bro I was so shook when Sarah turned out to be Ren’s mom. It literally took me by surprise. I’m so happy that she ended up not going to see Ren tho. Bec I wanted her to keep her promise of only seeing him when he’s
ready.

Ren and Kyoko are everything Istg. I was not mad abt them not having interactions in this volume tbh. Since I still love the story. But we still got to see them texting. Which was rly cute!

I have two top fav manga series of all time. They’re unbeatable. They’re tied for my favorite manga series to ever exist. They’re Skip Beat(which is this manga) and Yona of the Dawn. They’re my tops and will never be beat. I can’t choose between them. Idk if anyone noticed. But I did as soon as he showed up. The person that Ren started fighting towards the end is actually representing the Blue Dragon(Sinha) from Yona Of The Dawn. And the little squirrel is representing Ao(pukyu) which is the Blue dragons pet in Yona Of The Dawn. When I tell you my jaw dropped when I saw this. I was like is this supposed to represent them. Was this on purpose!?!? Until I read the authors note and she mentioned how they were representations of the Yona Of The Dawn characters. I can’t. This has to be the most iconic thing ever. The fact that these are my favorite manga series ever too. 😩😩

This volume was everything and more. It rly was amazing. My rating is obv a 5/5. I’d give it ♾️ if I could!

This volume revealed a lot! I wish there was an acknowledgment that Kyoko was incorrect about not getting a return gift from Ren. Yashiro clearly knew she was supposed to have one, so you’d think he and Ren would wonder why she didn’t go to (not)Disneyland.

So, after finding out more about “Sarah,” a few pieces are clearer. I think uncle Tiger is Ren’s maternal grandfather, which explains his earlier conversation with Lory about knowing how painful it is to not be acknowledged as “grandpa” and that he avoided Ren at the party. Cedric…is probably his cousin then? Leonard is a mystery, and I’m curious when Tina will appear again - I may be mistaken but it felt as if her attitude toward Kuon had softened since that day in his nightmare. Im not really sure what this new project is going to entail, but Moko and Ren will be working together - but if Cedric is the lead, what roles are they playing?

I do wish Kyoko would be honest with Moko. She gets so hurt when she thinks she’s being left out, but can’t bring herself to confide about Ren. That’s a pretty unequal relationship.

Box R mist have wrapped up, since it’s faded into obscurity. I’d like to see Chiorin pop back up (then again, in manga world only a short time has passed) and I REALLY want Tragic Marker to be released.

This volume has some setup for future episodes, but doesn't, in itself, do all that much. The first half of the book takes us to an analogue of D*sneyland where Kyoko has a great time and meets a rare princess. The second half drops a lot of secondary characters' names--few or none of whom I recognized--and I was pretty lost. It would argue for a reread of the whole series if I was anxious about keeping every player in this immense cast firmly in my mind, but I'm not. The last chapter or two were in Skip-Beat's occasional "something that would never happen in real life and doesn't make that much sense even within its own context" mode (Lory's choices in dress are another example), which I can only hope doesn't last too much longer before we're back to actually moving the story forward again.

I love this series, but this small part of it didn't do much for me.

Repeated review.

I am so uninterested in this series, but I want to see it through (at least to the last translated volume; not sure I’ll pick it up again when more comes out). I won’t be making proper reviews for it anymore since my thoughts are just generally the same all the time anyway (lots of annoyance/anger); my rating will tell you if I liked or disliked it. You can safely assume, however, that I still despise Sho and Ren, and everyone else, but Kyo and her bestie (who sometimes isn’t around and sometimes is, much like Sho).

I’ve been waiting for this volume for a hot minute! Since May… okay at least it was not a whole year.

I was so happy by so many things but even if right now that the romance is starting to flourish I feel that I need for the story to move faster!

Also is Kuon a relative of Prince Cedric? I need more story!

I need more lovey dovey scenes of Ren and Kyoko! It’s nice that Kana and Ren worked out a deal where they’ll be each others cover. I’m surprised that Juliena/Sarah met Kyoko. I hope more scenes show up in the next volume with Kyoko getting to know Ren’s mom. I want to see more of Ren’s reaction too. Can’t wait for the next volume! I’m sad it doesn’t come out until May.

Honestly, the Yona of the Dawn reference blew my mind lol When I saw Shin-Ah, I thought I was hallucinating, and when they confirmed it in the bonus chapter, I WAS SHOOK! The coincidence!!! It’s been more than 10 years since I fell in love with both series, but this month I decided to buy all the manga for both of them together, AND THIS CROSSOVER TRULY SHOCKED ME LOL PEAK LITERATURE.

Whilst I would have liked this volume to be longer and for Ren and Kyoko to spend some time together, this volume is cute, introduces an important new character, and sets up a new TV drama/film (and my favourite bits of the manga are when Kyoko and the rest are working on TV shows!)

Kyoko at a princess theme park could keep me fed and hydrated for a whole month. She's so cute. A fake dating scheme appears! Sarah/Juliena who? Her relationship to Ren and why she's seeing him or not makes no sense.
