OUR STORY
A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.

Crazy list (stupid attractions topping worthwhile places), worthless methodology (let's ask people who work for us to pick their own Top 20s), completely worthless compilation. The book is assembled in their ranking order from #1 to #500. Who cares? If you want to know what to see in Missouri, you have to go to the index in the back of the book to find a page number, which doesn't match the ranking number, so when you get to the page you have to look carefully to figure out which attraction is the one in Missouri. It would have been more helpful to group them by type (parks, museums, experiences) or by US region (Northeast, Southeast, etc.). The photos are that great and the write-ups are a couple of sentences with an overabundance of adjectives but scant information. Some places don't even tell you the name of the town it's in, but more like "it's 50 miles from Phoenix."

They just listed all the national parks and fee other places.
I could have gotten the list faster with more details if I had just googled! Disappointed 😥 😞

pretty pictures but tbh kinda useless as a destination guide. would have been more helpful to group them by type (parks, museums, experiences) or by US region (Northeast, Southeast, etc.)
