Katarina might just be an underdog and up and coming goat because this manga hits so hard and right out of the gate I couldn’t be happier with the entire cast and premise. I wish I could say I’d found this series organically but sadly I was definitely drawn in by my fascination and love of the anime, but in saying that I can say that once again it’s amazing to see how a still panel can be just if not more expressive and full of movement than an anime even can but in both the goblin and the snake fight that 100% reigns true. Aside from the gorgeous shading and art style firstly all hail mud frog, secondly the concept of following a trash gamer is cool but then to have him take breaks and actually jump into “trash” worlds with their own unique gimmicks and quirks is just another level of amazing and superseding expectations, lastly can I even if in a fan made creation please explore and maybe live in Rabituza someday I mean aside from the dope ass bunny characters, the aesthetic , and scenery just make me want to dive in and experience it myself. Let’s see where this journey takes us Sunraku! 4.75/5

Sooo cool! I am loving this! Though haha I feel sorry for his crush who is wondering what the hell he is doing🤣. I love the MC and don't even mind it that he is a tad overpowered.. Or is that just tactical and dumb luck. 😂 I do like the mask, that is a fun addition especially as no one else seems to have it. Great and cool action and fight scenes.

Shangri-La Frontier Volume 1 by Katarina is a fun start to a manga about a young man obsessed with games who starts a new game and is swept away. After finishing a mediocre at best video game, Rakuro Hizutome finally starts one of the most popular games Shangri-La Frontier. The game takes him by surprise and he begins to get competitive as he learns more about the world.
This manga is fun and fast paced. There is a lot of great action and I’m enjoying exploring the world, which feels full-fledged. We get to know Rakuro through how he approaches the game and different difficulties. I am interested to see if more of his everyday life outside of the game is added so that we can better understand his story.
There is a lot of promise in this first volume and I’m excited to pick up volume 2 to see where it goes next.

I had so much fun reading this one! We follow a teenage boy named Rakuro Hizutome who loves finding "trash games" and beating them. These games are poorly made with lots of bugs. After beating a game he absolutely hated he decides to try a good game for once. This VR game is called "Shangri-la Frontier".
After starting the game it's like a breath of fresh air, and he loves it. We follow his journey to beat the game. I loved this one! If you're a fan of RPG and video games and are looking for a fun fantasy manga, I would recommend this one!

Ah, I thought as much. The anime has ruined this one for me. The story was still familiar and the drawings were odd. Shame but think I'm sticking with the anime on this one. Still cool though. Trash gamer goes for a god tier game.

Shangri-La Frontier Vol. 1 is the start to an all-new adventure, one that absolutely captivates high school student Rakuro Hizutome. I can't say I blame him – who hasn't gotten a little bit too into a video game before? It happens.

Rakuro Hizutome has earned a bit of a reputation in the gaming community. You see, he prefers to the games known as being the shittiest out there. It's his passion – finding a hidden treasure (read: piece of garbage) and completing what so few people have done before.

However, upon the recommendation of another game, Rakuro Hizutome caves and decides to try one of the most popular VR games available: Shangri-La Frontier. In other words, he's going to jump from one of the worst games possible to one of the best.

There is something innately charming about bad video games, isn't there? There's also something quite frustrating about them, so I respect any player that can actually make their way through an entire gauntlet of them.

This concept makes for an interesting basis, a kid going from horrible games to one fantastic game. It's fun watching Rakuro's reactions to a game that is carefully thought out. Though I think it's safe to say that he's already getting into more trouble in Shangri-La Frontier Vol. 1 than most would have anticipated.

Shangri-La Frontier Vol. 1 is a bit of a goofy read, but it has a lot of charm. That is what I enjoyed the most about this series, and it will probably be enough to tempt me into picking another volume when I have a moment to spare.

Thanks to Kodansha Comics and #NetGalley for making this book available for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Shagri La Frontier is a manga about a kid who likes to play trashy VR Games. He goes by the nickname Sunraku, due to a calligraphic play on his family name. There is nothing in life that makes him more happy than to somehow finish a trashy game, full of bugs, annoyingly soulsucking quests and gimmicky missions. When we meet him he has just finished a game where you are a hero who follows around a annoying fairy princess that screws everything up, but blames other. He is so happy that he finished the game, that he KO’ed the fairy princess mid end credits. He is also only in his second year of high school. Unusually for the protagonist of these sorts of manga, he is very social and very talkative. While he only talks about the games, but with much fervor and rigor, he does seem to have friends and companions in real life, but also in the virtual space.

So in search for new trash he can conquer and call his own, he visits the local game shop, run by his friend Mana, a blond woman who is an adult, but its hard to gauge her age. She is there with a young lovely lady by the name of Rei. I assume Rei is the same age as Sunraku, but extremely shy. She implies something to Mana and vanishes as soon as Sanraku go through the door. Mana talks him into trying something new. Instead of swimming against the current of digital trash, he should surf the wave of popular feeling and start playing Shangri La Frontier, the best and most popular VR game in the world. Reluctant, he accepts.

Once in the game he is like fish in the water. He enjoys playing, skips the first town right to the second, slashing monsters left and right, leveling up like a madman. Right here is where one of my first problems with Sunraku as a character are. While there is no mention of a chosen one, nor did anyone imply that he is, but there is a certain latent air about him as a character. There are multiple instances, and they are obvious as soon as he enters the game that he is special. The amount of grinding all those awful games for hours on end has made him such a master that nothing is really a challenge he can’t overcome. And he is very cocky about the way he plays the game. Eventho the poison of the snake almost makes him lose a life.

This changes when he by accident and by the lack of his own luck discovers a behemoth monster Luceorn. A monstrous wolf with various mythical writings, is one of the seven great monsters. Nobody was able to slay them. Our gunho protagonist is eager to try. He fights, valiantly even, giving his all. It is not enough. The beast demolishes him. When he wakes up the next day, he is inflicted with a curse. The curse hinders his gameplay a lot, but it can still be removed, under certain conditions.

This is where I thought the difficulties would set in. But no. The tension gets deflated. He runs into a bunny, gets invited into their kingdom to meet their leader, a very yakuza like figure in the shape of a giant, cigar smoking scarred rabbit. There he is given a choice to train under them and improve massively. Probably to be good enough to nullify the majority of the effects of the curse. Does he accept.

Well this massive decision is postponed. He decides to think it over while playing another game with a buddy. This is my second major gripe with the manga. Its hard to forget this is just in a virtual land without any actual consequences. The worst thing that can happen to our protagonist is a loss of a couple of XP points or some pieces of equipment. No matter how dire or tense the situation is, he can pause it and go do something else. Hard to get into something that has such issues with tension and drama. He does go back to the game, after talking a very dear online buddy into trying the game as well. Marketing for the game works, marketing to read more of the manga doesn’t.

The game itself seems like a well thought out game. There are plenty of classes and races. You can customize everything and everything about your avatar. The mechanics, the powers, they are all well thought out, and if you excuse the grinding it would be a fun game to play if it existed, especially given how well the world works.

This brings me to the best part about this reading experience, the looking. This manga has very wonderful and at times even incredible art. There was a slight hiccup at the beginning in the first chapter. A couple of the panels in Mana’s shop look like they have been traced from photos. Even the characters look out of place in the thing, with very thick white lines surrounding them and excluding them from the background. But as soon as Sunraku enters the game the visual magic begins. There is so much skill, talent and attention to detail in every single panel. Places, be indoor or outdoor have a very attractive aesthetic quality about them. From the forest where he spawn to the town he visits and the desert. They feel and look exactly as they should. Every interior is completely filled out, but that filling out doesn’t come with repetitive elements. Each character has a specific feel that is consistent ot the feel of the manga. They are also very well designed. From the basic monsters that spawn at the outskirts of the first town, to the big bad special monster which he fights towards the end of the volume. They are all memorable and believable. The characters are as well. The best example is the mysterious knight that keeps searching for Sunraku. His or her armor is gigantic, decorated with detailed ornaments and a detailed crest of their clan/guild. The same is true for the leader of the rabbit kingdom. Fights, one of the biggest draws in these sorts of manga are also well executed. While Sunraku is very dominant, there is effort given to show that its not a cakewalk. There are blows he gives and suffers, each portrayed with a particular intensity.

In the end, it is a very fun viewing experience, but in terms of characters, narratives and invention the work is bland average.

Fabulous!

As a big fan of the anime, I just had to start the manga. I'm absolutely happy to say that it does not disappoint! Pacing is great, world building stellar, characters delightful... What not could you want? How about a quality story the likes your haven't seen since .hack//sign? Or maybe top notch art whether it be fight scene or exhibition?

Definitely a must for you library.

This manga makes the most of a game world setting, which is another way of saying that is isekai manga. However, this is not just one world, each game the protagonist played is a world of its own. Unlike other isekai manga with lazy plotting, the original author takes the time to build each new game world with its own backstory and playing mechanics.

As I mentioned earlier, unlike other isekai manga where the main character is trapped in another world modeled after a game they played, this story is still rooted in a real world where the main character can go from one world to another at will just by loading the disc or cartridge of another game.

The main character is a gamer who likes his “trash games”, buggy, imbalanced, unpopular games. The title of the manga, “Shangri-La Frontier” is the first AAA game Rakuro has played in a while, and he finds himself immersed in the game like nothing else he has ever experienced.

At the beginning, there is barely any plot. All the main character must do is just play and trigger the side quest. Once he is starting to get a feel for the game and let the immersive experience take over, he finds himself wanting to beat all the unique bosses of the game.

Early on, it really doesn’t need a plot. After all, we can already be endlessly entertained by watching video game streams in the real world. This manga is basically experiencing a game through the main character’s eyes, like I was watching their channel on Twitch. Playing Shangri-La Frontier vicariously by reading the manga.

The source material of this manga is from a web novel, but most of the things I like about this title are mostly from the work of adaptation. The manga author nailed it on the character and monster designs. The action sequences are also well done. I certainly won’t be reading the web novel, when the manga is well illustrated. It is just that the original story lent itself well to be adapted and serialized as a manga.

A fun story about playing (terrible) video games! Virtual Reality games in specific!

Mind you, I already knew the whole story from the anime, but it's nice to see the (secondary) source material, too! The art appears to have been tweaked a bit in the anime: Hizutome's hair is a little longer, and Emul's ears are TWICE as long! Wild!

That said, while I'm trying to grade fairly for the fact of it being a manga, the book isn't as interesting as the anime—it's just too easy to hear their voices when I read, and that's a layer that a print book just can't get. (If there's an audiobook, I'd be VERY surprised but interested!) It IS a fun book, though, and exceptionally well done for its efforts! I probably would have gotten just as hooked had I not seen the anime first (and been rather pleased once I saw it!). In fact, I'm annoyed now that I could only find the first book... back to waiting for the rest to come out!

Recommended for video game fans, particularly RPG fans! (Fighting game fans might also enjoy it, too, since there's a bit of that thrown in!)

Going all out

While this story has humor, action scenes, and video game game immersion such as its predecessors .hack and Sword Art Online there was something about the book that I just couldn't get into it. Now that is not to say it was bad but this is a beginning volume at best introducing the main character, showing off his skills honed from playing normally terrible games, and nerfing him because I guess the creator didn't want the main character to be a clone of Kirito (though he does duel wield weapons right off the bat.)

The only thing I found kind of boring was the little bit of a light novel in the end of the volume showing off three friends as they exploit old game glitches (in another game not Shangri-La Frontier.) Honestly while the main character loves finding glitches and using them the thought of gaming companies releasing such software really bothers me for some reason. Maybe because i came from a generation where games were tested and didn't need constant updates to make them playable. :)

Puntuacion: 3.5

A FUN VRMMORPG MANGA WITH A CLASSIC STAT SYSTEM AND ENGAGING ACTION.

Volume One of Shangri-La Frontier was the entertaining palette cleanser I needed!

I’ve had manga phases on and off over the years, though none since I joined Fable or Bookstagram, and I have a deep love for the medium and the stories it delivers to us. In this instance, we get a very enjoyable, if not necessarily totally new or different, take on a popular trope for manga.

Fantasy (or sometimes Science Fiction) Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games! (God, that’s a mouthful!)

While nothing I read here was particularly unique, what it does it does very well, with a classic art style, an interesting central protagonist, a variety of monstrous foes and more. Not to mention that I think I picked it up at the absolute perfect time for me!

All-in-all, I’m very much looking forward to continuing my read with Volume Two!

For the longest time, I assumed this was a more "traditional" isekai series, either with the main character dying and being reincarnated into a world resembling a video game, or else having the main character get trapped in a game (like SAO). Turns out Sunraku is just playing a VR game with no apparent consequences...?! Honestly, a huge surprise!

There's some mystery here where it seems the game's creator is upset that no one is playing the game the way he wants them to, and Sunraku ends up activating a hidden quest that doesn't match what he's read about the quest online, so maybe things will get more serious later? As it stands, we're just reading about a dude grinding in an MMO. The humor is decent, and the art is actually really good, so it works well enough. Let's see where this goes...!

While this isn't one of the fairly popular manga I wanted to read this week, I couldn't stop myself from picking it up (I'm sure I'm not the only one who wanted to find out what's up with the bird head).

I went in expecting a SAO-like story, but so far, the only similarity between the two I've noticed is the confident protagonist experienced in gaming. I have really enjoyed the first volume, especially watching Rakuro interact with the world and its inhabitants and the subtle promises of new plotlines and characters.

I'm still not sure whether I'm going to pick up the second volume or read something else, but I think chances of me returning to this series at some point are fairly high.

Kupikir ceritanya bakalan kyk SAO tp ternyata enggak. Eh ya gatau juga sih soalnya baru baca awalnya 😅

Ttg Rakuro yg pgn bgt mainin game yg jelek entahlah aku gatau konteksnya jelek disini apa, apakah shitty atau gmn. Kemudian dia dpt rekomendasi utk main game Shangri-La Frontier. Game RPG dan dia pakai chara dgn wajah burung bernama sunraku tp badan manusia😂 dia terobsesi utk jd master game krn merasa semua game udah dia kuasai, tp ternyata game ini gak spt yg dia bayangkan. Dia sering kalah lawan last boss tp akhirnya dpt tawaran utk ngalahin last boss dgn bantuan karakter kelinci bernama Emul, tp dgn catatan dia harus mau dilatih sama bapaknya Emul 😂
