An almost anti-fairy tale, about creating your own fate.
Lots of beautiful writing and two brave women at the forefront, confronting their destinies.
There's lots of traditional fairy tale elements, even a dragon! but the traversing of worlds and utilisation of magics was different from the norm. I loved the quiet power of both main characters and their devotion to each other.
It becomes more engrossing as the story proceeds and just when you think it's the end, and think you know what will happen next - you are still surprised!
A solid read for fairy tale lovers.

I hate romance and I stay away from YA, and now I think I know why that is: I hate the idea that all a woman needs is a prince. Preferrably a bad boy. Ugh and yuck.
This book has given me what I didn't even know I needed: characters who love each other, declare their love to each other almost instantly, and go on to face the challenges together. A positive example of how a romantic relationship should be.
In writing style, this book reminded me of Cassandra Clare. The premise is the same as that of The Sleeper and the Spindle - going away from the arranged marriage with a prince - but where in "The Sleeper and the Spindle" it ends with "That's all folks, the end!", "Waking Beauty" explores the repercussions of what it means to abandon the path that was laid out to you and wander into the wilderness to find your own path. And then there's different adjacent worlds, each with their own rules, that reminded me of Jack L. Chalker's Midnight at the Well of Souls, but in this book, each world is a different fairy tale. And I LOVE fairy tales.
"Waking Beauty" is about creating your own path, following your heart, and defying fate. And things you do for love and what sacrifices this may require.
I was smiling throughout the book, except for when I had to fight the tears when things looked especially bleak.
I found certain comfort in reading this book. That everything will be OK. And for now, let's enjoy the small things and care for our loved ones as much as we can.

The uncertain, chaotic future would sweep this night away all too soon, but for now it was enough to be here together, stubbornly celebrating life in this ramshackle cottage perched on the mountain of a dying world.
I found certain comfort in reading this book. That everything will be OK. And for now, let's enjoy the small things and care for our loved ones as much as we can.

This was the first audiobook I listened to for the book club, and it didn't disappoint. Because of the format, I'll start with explaining how I felt about the listening experience. Then I’ll get into my feelings about the story itself.
At first, the narration was a bit confusing. The reader’s voice was very erotic, if I may say. It was breathy and slow, and I felt like I was listening to an erotic novel instead of a fantasy one. The voice also promised more steamy scenes than what actually were in the book, even if it dealt with desire and romance. In the end, I got used to the narrator’s style and, after about the third of the book, I didn’t really think about it anymore. Overall, I’m pleased with the audio. The only thing I’d criticize it for, would be the whispered lines. I understand the narrator wished to actually lower their voice, but those lines were almost impossible to hear when I was in a more noisy space and didn’t want to turn up the volume just in case someone was to whisper something.
The story itself was quite enjoyable. It took me a while to get into it, and especially in the beginning the pacing felt slightly off. I wished we would’ve explored at least a little bit that time Andromeda spent on her own in the beginning of the book, because it would’ve given me as a listener a better understanding how that time actually affected her. Sometimes I also felt like things were happening too fast. Especially in the final chapter there was a lot going on, and I sort of expected one more chapter to fully calm down and wrap the story up. But in general. when the story started to get going, I fully enjoyed the ride.
I found the characters interesting, and I was especially happy to follow Talen and Andromeda’s relationship. It was written beautifully. The minor characters were also fleshed out enough so I could understand their motivations. They felt fitting for the story and the setting. The writing also flowed well, the author clearly knows how to craft a nice story, and I wasn’t ever bored with the book. It was a good fantasy story with a strong romantic relationship in the center of it.
In conclusion, I enjoyed the story and it worked pretty great as an audiobook. If you enjoy fantasy, especially the kind with solid romantic relationships and dragons in it, I’d recommend this book to you.

The story follows Andromeda, an ex-princess, who leaves her fate to travel worlds to find her lover, Talen. The beginning was rushed. I understand why however there was so much going on, I wish there was a prequel or another book before this. Andromeda's journey is briefly gone over throughout the story but there is so much more. It quickly highlights the greater universe the story takes place and I hope there are more stories that further that exploration.
I like Andromeda a lot. I thought she was a fascinating character and her and Talen's navigation of the story had clever nods to fairy tale tropes and themes. I wish there was more time spent with Talen, but I like what we got.

This review was hard for me to write. When the book was offered to the Sapphic Book Club, the summary we got was simple and intriguing but had one major spoiler; The story had an evil empress. At first glance, that doesn't seem like a spoiler. It is a common trope in fantasy stories and many fantasy books have villains introduced in the summary and beginning of the book. The problem with this story, is that the majority of the story is focused on why the Dragon no longer changes the season and figuring out why the dragon has a bad relationship with the empress. The empress is showcased as benevolent and trying everything to fix the issue, making the dragon the problem. However, since I knew the empress was evil, it was all a moot point. I found myself getting impatient waiting for the empress to be revealed as the villain, so the protagonist could figure out how to save the day. Since that reveal wasn't until the last 70% of the book, I was impatient for A WHILE. If I hadn't known that the empress was evil, I would have been sucked up into the mystery of what happened with the dragon and the empress, and would have enjoyed the book much more, probably a 4+ star book. Except I did know and that tainted my enjoyment of the book, which is why I rated it lower. I am glad the summary on Goodreads is much better and wouldn't leave other readers in the same boat as I was.
All in all, I thought this was a well done fantasy story that was negatively impacted by preconceptions from a summary. I would recommend this book for fans of fantasy and fairytales.

Rounding down because I foolishly tried to power through a fairytale like story.
I have a hard time connecting with stories written like a fairytale, but I was so curious about what the deal was. The story is fairly well done, I noticed in some places that characters spent time re-explaining their situation, which I was not a big fan of.
I would recommend if you are into princesses and their stoic sapphic love interest and bodyguard.

Waking Beauty by Dawn K. Lake was absolutely amazing! The characters were very likable and the story was so intriguing! Andromeda escapes into the Endless Forrest the night before she is set to be married. She comes across her original Fairy Godmother - who is now a Fallen Fairy because she granted wishes other than becoming a princess, which is the only wish they are allowed to grant. The Fallen Fairy sends her down the Broken Road to search for Talon, her long-lost love. She is attacked by a demon on the Broken Road and hides inside of a library where she finds a magical spell book that chooses her. She continues on her journey and finds Talon on a mountain, almost dead and burned beyond recognition. She also notices she has a curse mark burned into her. She was sent up the mountain by the Empress to slay the dragon - because it keeps the land in endless winter. The Empress has put a bounty on the dragon so it can be killed and they can have their other seasons back. The Curse mark on Talon gives her exactly one year to slay the dragon or die. Andromeda nurses her back to health with spells and potions she found in the spellbook and two rekindle their romance. Will the dragon be destroyed or will it destroy them first? Can they change their fate?

This book took me on an adventure and a half, and brought us out the other side slightly worse for wear but definitely glad we made the journey.
We start with Andromeda, escaping the castle and her life as a Princess. We then follow her along as she goes to find Talen, and becomes a Witch in the process. For me, this part of the story felt extremely rushed. I think I would have preferred to see her journey either mentioned during the main story, or even be a novella beforehand, and just referred to in the novel. Regardless, her story was told, and we understood where she was at when our main part of the story picked up.
Once Andromeda had found Talen, we got into the main story, and this was when I really got invested. At this point, our timeline slowed down, and we started to look deeper into the characters, their emotions, and their motivations. The world building set us up well to understand what was happening, and I really enjoyed the story as Andromeda was pushed to her limits, and struggled to find a way to save both Talen and the world they had found herself in.
Although I struggled a little in the beginning, it was worthwhile to push through, and I would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for a lighthearted but interesting fantasy novel.

I liked that the romantic relationship between the two leads had a rarely depicted dynamic of building something together, with communication key to figuring out and facing challenges. It was great seeing different fantasy tropes being woven together or completely upended. I found myself sighing with wistful pleasure as I closed the book, and hope to see more of Talen and Andromeda's adventures in the future.

For a fairy tale story, this checkmarks all the character expectations and scenes: enchanted places, witches, magic, a distress and someone saving it etc.
One of the things that drove me to this story is having the primary characters in an FF relationship...i was hoping to re-enact the awe and feelings from such perception but unfortunately i couldn't. I read the story with an adult mindset and preconceptions that disallowed better appreciation. If i could turn back the hands of time, I'd certainly give this book to my very young self, before disney, harlequins and M&Bs rubbed me off my imagining such kind of possibilities.

Waking Beauty starts strong. Introduced to Andromeda who is tired of her life as a Princess. I loved how this started. A Princess running away from her life to find her old bodyguard who is female? Sign me up! I was hooked from the beginning of this.
It starts off strong and doesn't let up either. As the story really starts to settle things are continually happening. There are very few points where I put this down thinking I had stopped at a good point.
The romance starts from the very beginning, so we are learning about Andromeda and Talen at the same time. This is usually a problem for me as I really want to get to know the characters and get the chemistry between them, but I didn't struggle with that here. I don't know how the author did it, but she managed to give them chemistry quickly where I was rooting for them from the beginning.
Fairytale elements were strong throughout this novel. Sleeping Beauty was the most obvious one, but it was so fun to see everything tied together to create this story.
While I did enjoy myself, there were times I struggled with the writing. If there is a case for telling vs showing, this would be it. This whole story is told to you. It does make for a quick read that is easy to digest, but this also means that there were emotions missing for me.
How the world functions here sounded so interesting. It was basically explained and easy enough to understand, but another explain of why I would have loved so more showing instead of telling.
Overall, this is a great sapphic read and a good novel from a debut author, who I'm hoping decides to write more. If you like fairytale retellings, make sure to give this one a chance.

I don’t have much to say about this story. I found the pacing to be a bit slow. I was listening at 2x (+) speed and still thought it was moving along too slowly.
I thoroughly enjoyed the romance between the protagonists. It was very romantic and sweet, the driving force behind the story for me was wanting to know how their story ended. If it was a happy ending or not, I didn’t really care. I just had to know. I really did find myself invested in their relationship.
The audio narration was excellent. There weren’t any issues with the audio, pronunciation issues, or repeated dialogue clips.

This is the story of a princess who doesn't marry the prince, becomes a witch and then goes to save the love of her life. That's when things get complicated.
I really loved Andromeda and Talen. Both women have had to fight to become who they really were. I think the source of magic for Andromeda was interesting and how it related to how she perceived herself.
I liked how there are several fairytales mixed into this story. It was fun to figure them each out. Sleeping Beauty was the obvious one of course.
The main romance is sapphic and there's also another sapphic relationship and those characters that ends up being very important to the plot. I actually think that there's only one man with any real speaking role in this book. And he's an annoying snitch.
If you're looking for a sapphic fairytale maybe try this one out.

This was an enjoyable read for me. I mean it is a short book so I guess I understand why it felt a bit rushed in the beginning but it's worth it in the end. I thought that the world-building was easy to understand and the story was really interesting. I'm rooting for the characters, their romance, and how they faced the challenges together. I enjoyed the magic system in this book and if you like fantasy or fairytales, this is worth checking out!

A rip-roaring epic fantasy adventure that provides widescreen thrills along with a deeply moving loving relationship at its heart. Waking Beauty expertly weaves several plotlines in one, such as the mystery of how a kingdom comes to be eternally locked in winter, the unfortunate plight of the Princess' beloved knight, and how Princess Andromeda discovers the magic she didn't know was inside her. Also what's up with this dragon? The novel contains a number of very positive themes that resonate with everyone, but are particularly important for young women, especially these days, such as never trust anyone demanding that you make sacrifices for them, never let anyone tell you who and what you are, and never put your faith in vague mystical concepts like "destiny". I enjoyed every moment of this book and would highly recommend it to anybody.
