"When a girl makes a wish," whispered the darting, half-unseen Fallen Fairy, "There are some wishes which are permitted, and others which are not. Fairy Godmothers are not supposed to grant a wish to a girl when she wishes for something she is not allowed to wish for. The only wish we are permitted to answer is when a girl makes a wish to be a Princess and mary a Prince. What do you think the effect of that might be?"
"After all, what would the Princes do if the Princesses stopped wanting them? If the Princesses started making other wishes, and having them answered? The very fabrick of our land would be rewoven into something completely different, and thus such fairy tales have been made unthinkable, unwritable, to keep the world weaving in the same old, worn patterns"
The uncertain, chaotic future would sweep this night away all too soon, but for now it was enough to be here together, stubbornly celebrating life in this ramshackle cottage perched on the mountain of a dying world.
