What can I say... The art is surely gorgeous. The story is basically space opera, with Galactic Empire and planet barons. Imagine simplified Dune universe.

من دیشب با کمیک متابارونز آشنا شدم، با زحمت زیاد تونستم دانلودش کنم و امروز تقریبا تمام زمان بیدار بودنم به خوندنش گذشت. در یک کلام میتونم بگم شاهکاره، نفسگیره و هر لقب خوبی که به ذهنتون برسه، میشه به متابارونز نسبت داد. متاسفانه فرصت نکردم که در موردش تحقیق کنم، اما با توجه به اینکه آلخاندرو خودوروفسکی یک دوره سعی کرد فیلمی بر اساس تلماسه بسازه، این کمیک هم خیلی تحت تاثیر اون کتابه. حس خوندنش دقیقا مثل دیدن فیلمهای خود خودوروفسکیه، روایت به حدی قویه که من نمیتونم هیچ ایرادی درش پیدا کنم. حتی توی خیالیترین لحظات هم منطق حضور داره و باعث میشه هیچ چیز احمقانه به نظر نیاد.
البته باید به طراحی خوان خیمنز هم اشاره کنم که تا حالا هیچ کمیکی (جز کارهای موبیوس مشخصا، اون بحث جداست) رو به این خوبی ندیده بودم، تمام پنل ارزش هنری بالایی دارن.
خلاصه که، توی این روزهای تاریک که تمامش به زل زدن به سقف میگذره، متابارونز تنها دلخوشی منه.

Що я можу сказати? Це було блискуче. Перші два альбоми «Отон прапрадід» та «Онората прапрабабця» науково-космічного банд десіне «Каста Метабараноів» Алехандро Ходоровського та Хуана Хіменеза підняли мене над землею завдяки священній олії епіфіт.
Уже із впевненістю можна говорити, що це класична серія наукової фантастики, де блиск технологій перетинається з людством, взаємопов’язуючись у могутніх істотах тваринного походження, але покращених завдяки механічним та електронним додаткам до власних тіл. «Метабарони» представляють собою неосяжність зірок у міжгалактичних Імперіях, таких могутніх і невблаганних, і сама Галактика. Зображений тут високотехнологічний світ — це не ідилічний рай, а холодний і жорстокий світ, де честь дорожча за життя.
Легенду свого героя та лорда, напівлюдину із майже безмежними здібностями, розповідає один милий робот іншому, де їхня розмова, окрім самої оповіді просякнута постійними «штучно інтелектуальними» жартами. І якщо брати до уваги, що Алехандро Ходоровський під час створення цієї саги був натхненний романом «Дюна» Френка Герберта, то саме під час чергової сцени діалогу цих двох роботів, ця частина нагадувала трішки творчість Станіслава Лема. Так що ж розповідає один робот іншому…
Із першого альбому «Отон прапрадід» ми дізнаємося історію прапрадіда Метабарона, із дому Кастака, де разом із цим пояснюється багатство родини, а також послідовність подій, які заснували знамениту касту. Також про болісні ритуали, які характеризують перехід до дорослого життя. З покоління в покоління воїнів родини навчають терпіти безвиразно важкі страждання. Розумні й невблаганні, ставлячи честь і обіцянку вище за життя, предки Метабарона перемагають усілякі труднощі, перевершуючи оточуючих у стратегії та силі. Лише з таким домінуванням ми можемо пояснити воїна, якого ми побачимо, як результат жорстокого, нещадного та найвищого формування, до якого додається передовий технологічний тягар, результат незмірного багатства.
У другому альбомі «Онората прапрабабця» автор показує нам Отона фон Зальца, у якого є сильне бажання мати нащадка, що продовжив би рід Зальца. Але, як ми бачили в попередньому альбомі, це не так просто через ряд незмінних подій. Та коли він доводить свою відданість, рятуючи імператорського гермафродита, вдячна імператриця виконує його бажання, яке він не смів вимовити вголос. Одного разу з’являється Онората із секти жриць Шабда-Уд, яка спокушає Отона і в яку той закохується. За допомогою краплі своєї крові йому вдається отримати бажаного сина Агнара. Але тут приходить розчарування, його син після того, як він врятував Онорату від навіжених рабинь епіфітним дротиком, олія робить його сина легшим за повітря. І щоб врятувати сина та щоб войовнича каста Метабаронів не зникнула, дружина Отона забрала сина далеко від батька для навчання упродовж семи років. Щоб він довів, що гідний свого батька й найвойовничішої касти у Всесвіті.
Художник Хуан Хіменез сторінка за сторінкою вміло показує нам потойбічні краєвиди та жахливих гібридних мутантів, ретельно деталізовану роботизовану техніку, зброю та броню, красивих жінок та жорстоку боротьбу рас за найбільший секрет цього світу. До великого кола художників, з якими Алехандро Ходоровський працював упродовж усієї своєї кар’єри, входять — Мебіус, Міло Манара, Жорж Бесс, Франсуа Бук, Ігор Баранько, Дас Пасторас і багато інших. Не знаю, яка була співраця та результат з іншими митцями, тому не маю бажання порівнювати Хуана Хіменеза із ними. Але його малюнок, деталізованість, насичені кольори та щільні композиції роблять «Метабарони» схожим на дивну суміш прекрасного та химерного, що визначає дух усієї цієї саги. Та, можливо, дух умовного «Ходоверсу», який для мене поки є великою невідомістю. І навіть попри відчуття певної неузгодженості слів сценариста та малюнку — це було захопливо.
Між пейзажами планет, де процвітають інші цивілізації, та космосом, населеним гігантськими кораблями, де все сповнено технологічних мрій, чистих і холодних, як метал, образів, які відображають майже ідилічний лад, але без місця для почуттів, де відбуваються війни та битви, стоїть один робот та розповідає іншому, що його найбільшим бажанням є продовженя «Касти Метабаронів» українською мовою.

Alejandro "El Topo" Jodorowsky also wrote several series of comics, of which this generational epic space opera seems to be a later example. This somewhat resembles a more ambitious version of 80s Heavy Metal style sci-fi pulp comics. Which makes sense as Jodorowsky was an occassional HM contributor, and worked with major 1980s sci-fi comics inspiration Mobeius to conceive this particular comic world. Anyway, the hero-saga aspect of it is sort of unthrilling to me in the way of much golden age sci-fi writing, or the majority of super hero comics. But Jodorowsky has undeniable imagination and Juan Gimenez's illustrations are fitting to the source, and the conceit that this is a verbal telling by bored robots allows for breakneck pacing. Honestly I could do with less excitement and more world color, but that's probably because I don't read a lot of this sort of thing anyway -- and why I don't, I suppose.

September 4, 2024Як же воно несеться. В цьому виданні всього 2 томи (124 сторінки), але хронологія подій настільки всеосяжна, що ти не встигаєш засвоювати лор цієї історії. Ходоровскі так хотів зняти Дюну, що в нього тут є космічний феодалізм, каста воїнів, що відмовилась від технологічних досягнень їхньої цивілізації, планета з цінними ресурсами, війна за володіння цією планетою, зникнення та відродження благородного роду, клан німфо-відьом, що займається євгенікою, та навіть випробування на біль. Але все це не важливо, бо через 20 сторінок ти про це забудеш, а за сюжетом пройде 50 років (approximately). Сказати, що Ходоровскі надихався Дюною - це применшити заслуги Герберта в написанні Дюни. Можливо це не зовсім очевидно з мого відгуку, але мені сподобалось.

An interesting side series to The Incal with gorgeous artwork and decent plot line. Meta baron always felt like Moorcock inspired action superhero and this elaborate fledged out series is just as crazy as that! A great read.

Ой. Теоретичне уявлення "Загалом знаю, хто такий і чим відомий Алехандро Ходоровські" і практичне знайомство навіть у лайт-версії графічного роману - це дві великі різниці. А знайомство вийшло таким, що й на ранок трохи в голові гуде.
Отже "Метабарони". Алехандро Ходоровські. Комікс французької школи. Супергероїка. Космічна опера формату "Дюна" (ну якжеж тут без "Дюни")+"Зоряні війни"+витрусити з Буджолд все, крім Бараяру та Цетаганди+додайте за смаком, а потім натисніть кнопку "Кров-кишки-отетосаме". Багато планет, багато насилля, багато божевілля.
А взагалі це про те, як один симпатичний робот розповідає іншому баєчки про родину їхніх власників: феодалів, з яких поєднання несприятливих обставин, сприятливих обставин та звички батьків калічити своїх спадкоємців не тільки психологічно виростило найкрутіших воїнів у Всесвіті. За результатами двох перших частин на виході маємо концентрат гротескної маскулінності, де дроїдам співчуваєш, а от людям - ні. І воно капець яке дивне, але дуже захопливе.

A trade paperback collection of The Metabarons by Alejando Jodorowsky with art by the late, great, Juan Gimenéz. For those of you unfamiliar the Metabarons are the ultimate warriors who first appear in Jodorowsky and Moebius's The Incal.
The story of this trade centers around the origins of The Metabaron dynasty, their place in the galactic history of The Incal and the traditions that will define the later generations of Metabarons. It is an understatement to say Jodorowsky "borrows heavily" from Frank Herbert's epic DUNE. The Shaba-Oud witches are the Bene Gesserit. The ritual mutilation of the young Metabaron-to-be mirrors the pain box, Honorata (a Shaba-Oud witch) bears an offspring of the wrong gender... At least we get space whales instead of sand worms and epyphite instead of spice. (It should be remembered Jodorowsky tried to make a DUNE movie in the 70s.)
The books are beautiful, Gimenéz (who recently died of COVID19) was an epic talent. Every single panel is gorgeous and over-painted the way a ripping space opera should be. It is in teaming up with top tier illustration legends that Jodorowsky turns a mediocre retelling into a set of books you keep in your collection.
O! And I feel SUPER bad for whoever it was at Humanoids Publishing that misspelled Jodorowsky's name on the cover. That's a mistake you don't live down.

Well drawn, but disturbing in places. I'd have probably appreciated this graphic novel considerably more had I read it back when I was a teenager.

The series is brilliant and absurd in parts, it’s a retelling of the family history of the Metabarons, five generation, each having their own weird tale.
At the start was enjoying the art and epicenes of the world but felt the plot moved too fast without developing the characters. There were very few real dialogues, in fact the only ones I was enjoying was the banter between the two drones as the series progressed those became hornier and crazier.
Chapter 4 seemed to be the turning point, more like the foundation and start of the series. The storyline is filled with some crazy adventures and creepy twists, the plot moves to and fro between great ideas to childlike imagination. The art is fabulous, a mixture of steampunk and acid driven though process.
I read half the series from the original publications of year 2000 and the rest from 2012. Wording is the same but the new publication is of much better quality, the colour seems redone, which did make a huge difference.

Da, to je vidljivo no vrlo sam zadovoljan Gimenezovim crtežom, crtežom kakav ja volim pa s toga i visoka ocjena.

Yo había leido primero el volumen 2, Aghnar y Oda, esto me dejó con una muy alta expectativa, este volumen tambien es bueno pero me gusto mas el numero 2. Disfruté como se desarrolló la historia de Othon para llegar a tener a Aghnar. También son muy buenas las ilustraciones de las batallas entre las navas espaciales.
I had first read volume 2, Aghnar and Oda, this left me with a very high expectation, this volume is also good but I liked number 2 more. I enjoyed how the history of Othon developed to get to have Aghnar. The illustrations of the battles between the space ships are also very good.

A planet peopled with a tribe of powerful warriors guarding some substance that has economic impact on the galaxy, pseudo-feudal hierarchy, a clan of powerful women, one of whose members defies orders of which gender child to have (which she can control of course) because of love - definitely not inspired by Dune at all. Except instead of taking acid and deeply contemplating religion and ecology in order to build the universe, you take PCP and throw in all passing crazed ideas, just so long as they sound extremely bad-ass. I love it.

Hm, so I checked out this series because someone compared it to Warhammer 40K, and the hand-painted art looked gorgeous. I have a high tolerance for hamminess, sex jokes, and inept portrayals of women so I breezed through this.
Everyone in this book is bats**** bananapants.
Baron Othon van Salza especially. I guess this is what happens when you come from a line of guys who had something wrong with them (see the prequel book).

Overall a story that's quite trashy and not charitable towards women. Men either. Everyone's a drama queen with no common sense (just like Warhammer 40K).
I think, at its heart, Saga of the Metabarons is about generational trauma and how it leads to a family with such ugly worldviews and ways of treating each other. Remember Dayal, the first ancestor, was The problems stemming from Dayal just got passed down. The narrative doesn't hold your hand and you have to come to that conclusion on your own. Perhaps that wasn't the intention - I will have to read the rest of the saga.

I felt like this graphic novel was amazing in its own way, but felt fairly "old" in certain aspects of its worldbuilding.
Many of the characters feel like caricatures, but unique caricatures. They all have 1 set of "rules" that they are written by. Those "rules" are pretty easy to figure out from the beginning. Many are there for a Shakespearian style comedic relief, while others are written to teach the folly of sticking to strict codes of honour.
Anyone that has read Dune (Frank Herbert) will immediately see the connection (through Jodorowsky). If you have seen his documentary, you will immediately understand many of the shifts away from Dune as well (such as the birth of Othon's son). As someone that loved Dune, I was okay with this. It felt like if Dune was more obviously based on Western cultural aspects and was trying to fit itself in with a retelling of a Greek tragedy.
I only have two criticisms so far in the series. First is some of the writing seems off for certain characters. There are lines that Othon spouts that totally broke me out of the scene. An example is a line he shouts about needing a faster elevator. This is in the middle of a grim situation for his honour and his family. Second is that its very obvious a woman was not consulted at any point of the worldbuilding or writing. Women so far have only been a vessel for sex or procreation. You can see Honorata and her group for this, as well as Othon's concubines. I'm hoping this changes with the next few volumes, especially considering the focus of each volume. The worldbuilding and visuals are very phallic-centric, which I get considering events surrounding one character, but it's VERY obvious what they're trying to say about masculinity and genitalia.
The end of Honorata set up what looks to be a very interesting plot. I'm excited to see how this one event changes the politics of the world.
Overall, this was an entertaining book. I loved the worldbuilding, even if it was very obviously taken from something else. There were a few problematic issues. The writing is okay. It hits its mark most of the time but often throws you completely out of the book. The art is great, in my opinion (opinions on art can be very subjective). I generally can't a graphic novel if the art isn't something I like.
Many of the characters feel like caricatures, but unique caricatures. They all have 1 set of "rules" that they are written by. Those "rules" are pretty easy to figure out from the beginning. Many are there for a Shakespearian style comedic relief, while others are written to teach the folly of sticking to strict codes of honour.
Anyone that has read Dune (Frank Herbert) will immediately see the connection (through Jodorowsky). If you have seen his documentary, you will immediately understand many of the shifts away from Dune as well (such as the birth of Othon's son). As someone that loved Dune, I was okay with this. It felt like if Dune was more obviously based on Western cultural aspects and was trying to fit itself in with a retelling of a Greek tragedy.
I only have two criticisms so far in the series. First is some of the writing seems off for certain characters. There are lines that Othon spouts that totally broke me out of the scene. An example is a line he shouts about needing a faster elevator. This is in the middle of a grim situation for his honour and his family. Second is that its very obvious a woman was not consulted at any point of the worldbuilding or writing. Women so far have only been a vessel for sex or procreation. You can see Honorata and her group for this, as well as Othon's concubines. I'm hoping this changes with the next few volumes, especially considering the focus of each volume. The worldbuilding and visuals are very phallic-centric, which I get considering events surrounding one character, but it's VERY obvious what they're trying to say about masculinity and genitalia.
The end of Honorata set up what looks to be a very interesting plot. I'm excited to see how this one event changes the politics of the world.

This prequel exploring the lineage of The Incal’s Metabaron is great. Its tone so far is more somber and monastic than The Incal, and Jodorowsky tells a contained story while still naturally overlapping with earlier iterations of some of the major political factions from The Incal. I love the frame story too, of two maintenance robots employed by the current Metabaron sharing the details of his ancestors. Tragedy strikes more than once and acts as a seed for the clan of Metabarons, plus there’s a wildly imaginative birth scene I thought was bonkers in a good way.
Juan Gimenez’s beautiful Dune-inspired watercolor art is amazing as well. I can’t wait to check out the next generation of Metabarons.

Я прочитав перший том, і не до кінця зрозумів в чому велич та стільки розмов. Тобто, так - візуально це розйоб, те як художник малює світло - це неймовірно. А дизайни костюмів і кораблів просто прекрасні.
Проте з точки зору нарративу у мене якось не сильно вдалося проникнутися.
Тобто так - у нас тут гіпермаскулинне сайфай фентезі родом з 90-х з усіма атрибутами, але воно написано настільки наівно, що здається враження що його писала дитина. Будь яке слово обов'язково отримує приписку - гіпер, мега, прото, атомний і тд.
Це звучить якось занадто надумано, і через чур "фентезійно". А враховуючи що весь наратив подається через розмову двох роботів, які весь час говорять, як у них "закипає масло", "нагріваються діоди" від переживань, то сприймати серйозно цей твір важко, хоча він намагається...
Можливо я щось не так зрозумів, або мав якісь завищені очікування, але величі я відчути не зміг... Можливо це тому що весь твір просякнутий наративами сліпого фанатизму та відданості ідеї попри любу раціональність, хз, але твір точно не попав в мене

This is for fans of Jodorowsky and his Incal series, which I am. I guess you should also check it out if you're into Dune (guilty), because the whole Incal series and the characters evolved out of a failed Dune adaptation. The Incal series also reeks of the 5th Element (I like that too), but that is because Moebius worked on the 5th Element before his death and brought his wealth of experience on the Incal to the project. So I was set up pretty well going into it.
Anyway, this is the story of the Metabaron line and it is about a brutal as you think it is. Amazing art, and mind busting ideas in the story have got me already buying the next books in the series. Looking forward to the rest of the story.

Really long story that is impressive in scope and artistry. I wish the conceit of the story - the robots telling the story, that is - wasn't as grating though. The one robot keeps saying "yo this is so exciting I'm going to blow a gasket!" and the other one keeps telling it to shut up. It's like if R2 *AND* 3PO could talk and were both complete trash robots.
I get some of the stilted language is due to translation but it sticks out when it happens. Not enough for me to say "oh this is terrible!" but enough to call it out.
Can't wait to finish the series.

Reviewing this in place of the entire series. I really liked it. Fucked up family issues, convoluted plots, melodrama. But in a kind-of tongue-in-cheek way? A pastiche, it seems, of Greek drama and tragedy with a twist of love and hippy-dippy stoner vibes. Gimenez' art style is not my favorite, but it is unquestionably a thoroughly developed style and his artwork is very good on a technical level. I think my gripe was that it feels more like concept artwork than a comic. Anyways, just a nitpick.

metabarons is a different comic from the sci-fi gender. it's cruel barbaric and dwells in ancient customs of primitive warrior tribes yet it is based far in the future when multi galactic empires stretch over millions of light years. this volume contains the beginning of the caste of metabarons their adventures and peculiar habits. the art is great the story is extraordinary and the general feeling is very good.

Despite an affection for these characters from The Metabaron & The Incal, at no point in this book did I give a single shit. Which after how enjoyable The Incal was, puzzles me. It's almost like, a crime? To make these characters boring. Jail for Jodorowsky.

You'll fry your diodes at Jodorowsky's space opera. Gorgeous art. There are other over reaching sci fi comics but few this good.
