River Raid by Eric Helm is a fun read if something can be fun about war. It describes some of the beginnings of the brown water navy in Vietnam. I have found this series interesting although improbale sine the same group of people are involved in most types of small group tactics used in this war. But you get a good feel for the different types of terrain the troops where up against.
Good storyline, Mr. Helm has a way to involve the reader in his stories. Nice stories about the war in Viet nam and the soldiers who did there duty. If anyone likes military Stories they will enjoy Mr. Helps writings. Red
Action packed with humor, horror, humanity, humility and hangovers. Darn good read for this genre .Mix in a minor love story and you have a entertaining story.
More like a 3.5 but its a solid Vietnam squad based tale. The characters are well written and the action is detailed and interesting. This one details how the camp in the middle of enemy territory used a stolen boat to sort of test out the ideal of the climatic river raid of the title. The support characters are fun too, the new guy to the squad acts exactly like a vampire and has a surprising run in.
All in all I recommend the series its exciting and realisticly detailed. Now I'm ready to start the series this one turns into Vietnam Ground Zero.
Another excellent entry in the Scorpion Squad/Vietnam: Ground Zero series. Some parts read more like an after-action report than they do a novel, but overall it's involving and well-written. There's a new character in River Raid who joins the Special Forces A-team at Camp A-555, who very well might be a vampire, and who's killed at the end by a Vietcong booby trap; a wooden crossbow bolt through the heart. So that was weird.
