Mira Lockhart is married to her work. One of the youngest library directors in the state, she has been climbing ladders for so long she’s forgotten what life is like outside the library. Not that she has time for love and all that mushy stuff - Westbrook Public Library is the most challenging place she’s ever worked, and every day there’s a new crisis to avert. Her new library page, for one.
Chelle Tate is young, wild, and free, with fiery red hair and a confidence that instantly draws Mira in – perhaps too close, as Mira finds herself crossing professional boundaries against her better judgment.
As tensions mount between the two women, so do the bizarre occurrences at the library – boycotts and vandalism and sex in the stacks all conspire to threaten Mira’s job and keep her from finding balance and happiness with Chelle. Mira finds love in the stacks, but will she have the courage to pursue it?

Love in the Stacks is my first encounter with author Cara Malone and it was not a bad story, but there were some elements that dragged the book down from a 5 star rating. I cannot understand main character Chelle's temporary lapse of sanity when she kisses her potential boss lady full on the lips 3 minutes into her a job interview. Are you nuts?!?! And then the woman even hires her! And you didn't think this was going to spell trouble from the get go? I would have loved it if the author had taken her time building up the tension a bit. As it was now, I had a hard time feeling their relationship.

The other point was our moustache twirling co-worker Jack. His abrasive behaviour was too over the top to be believable. A little more finesse would have worked much better for the plot instead of hitting us over the head with it, but I guess the author will grow into this as she hones her skill because the majority of the story was enjoyable to read.

f/f explicit
Themes: oh boy insta-lust strikes again, to kiss your potential boss on a job interview looks like insanity to me, lots of sexytimes in uncomfortable places, what is it with all the name abreviations? Chelle... Mira... Nita... that's just annoying, getting funky on the futon, they need a trip to IKEA.

Mira Lockhart has spent the last ten years climbing the professional ladder to finally land the director gig at Westbrook Public Library. But once she gets there, she has to deal with a particularly nasty co-worker, not to mention what seems like a never-ending train of acts of vandalism and bad publicity. Nevertheless, she uprooted her whole life and moved to Westbrook for this job, and she’s not about to give up her lofty title so easily.

But things get complicated when Chelle Tate shows up looking for a job at the library. There’s instant chemistry between the two women, but Mira makes is clear that there can’t be anything more than that. Well – easier said than done. It doesn’t take long before things get physical. And really, really complicated as Mira constantly worries that someone’s going to find out about her unprofessional relationship with her subordinate.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable story. I really got invested in the characters. I found myself thinking about Mira and Chelle’s situation even when I wasn’t reading the book, not to mention, the two beautiful women make pretty good material for fantasizing. Which is what everyone loves in a romance, right? The author was very adept at describing the emotions of the characters, and over the course of the second half of the book, I felt like I was on an emotional rollercoaster ride right along with them. I felt every kiss and every tear. Not to mention, the love scenes were very well-written. I adored everything about the ending. A highly-recommended title.

Overall a fun and easy read, complete with a little angst, smexy times (in the stacks, of course), and a cranky villainous librarian co-worker. The author does a great job painting the scene and characters. I have no problem "seeing" it all, and I love that about her.

There were a few things about the characters and story that I had trouble with. Nothing huge, but they made the book not quite as wonderful as the author's "Awakened." There was something just missing in their connection that I just didn't quite feel. It seemed more insta-lust, despite the later "we have something worth fighting for" declarations.

Chelle came across a little immature, which she, to some small degree, acknowledges. I'm not sure why she felt like Mira needed boundaries pushed, and why Mira agreed with her on that point. At it's root, the boundary wasn't about being willing to be in a relationship, it was about being in a relationship with a subordinate co-worker. To me, that's a different ball o wax. But that was the conflict they had to work through. In the end, it was nice to see them get their HEA and I will continue to look for books from this author.

Love in the Stacks – Cara Malone

This is a fast-paced emotional rollercoaster with some serious erotica. The story starts off with the rather unlikely premise of somebody being given a job despite completely inappropriate behaviour at their interview, but develops into a decent plot with enough twists and turns to keep the attention. The work place intrigue might be obvious to the reader, but it adds a good sup-plot to the story and saves it from being simply an erotic romance.

The main characters are well done, both flawed, both need to grow and the author has done a good job of maturing them throughout the romance as one takes more responsibility and the other learns what is really important to her.

The scenes are well drawn, descriptions well done, the library has real character and is a pleasing background to the plot. The sex scenes are hot, explicit and with enough variety to make them fresh, definitely no fade to black here. There were grammar and editing issues which was a shame as it did detract from the experience, but not so badly as to make me stop.

I want to say lesbian Mills & Boon but don’t mean it as an insult. It’s a good fast read, enjoyable and definitely erotic. The improbable opening coloured the whole book for me, which is unfortunate as from then on the story settles down into a solid well-conceived plot.

Cara Malone creates such magnificent chemistry between her characters. I greatly enjoyed the story with Chelle and Mira. There was some anger, but resolved timely and spectacularly. I am definitely going to be reading this again.

I've had this book on my Kindle Unlimited since like April, so I was happy to finally read it! Also because it was about two women working in a library, and as someone who adores the library, that setting just excited me. Sadly, "Love in the Stacks" didn't quite work for me.

First of all, I really didn't like the romance. It already started off on the wrong foot - the women first met when Mira, a library director, was supposed to interview Chelle for the position of a library page. I say "supposed to", because instead of acting professional and like she wanted the job, Chelle was immediately attracted to Mira and ended up kissing her. Because that's obviously a smart idea to do to someone who's interviewing you for a job. Chelle made me extremely uncomfortable with the way she behaved; she always acted on her (horny) feelings and never really asked herself if it was the right time. Even after she got the job, she kept making sure that Mira knew she was into her, even going as far as offering her a massage. Keep in mind that Mira was her boss. Who just acts this way around their boss? Especially immediately after meeting them? She really seemed a bit like a predatory lesbian, and I really didn't like that.

Moreover, I just didn't buy their relationship? I was supposed to believe they were totally in love, but to me, it never felt like more than just lust? Which made a lot of their conversations and fights really weird to me. For example, Chelle wanted to be out and about with Mira, while Mira wanted to be careful to make sure she didn't lose her job. And for some reason, Chelle was extremely angry when Mira prioritised her job? Even though she'd been working towards her job as a library director - that she'd had for about six months at the beginning of the book - for the past ten years? If Mira and Chelle had actual romantic feelings that I could've seen, I could've understood Chelle. But I've never really seen their relationship as anything but sexual, so this felt really gross on Chelle's part.

The second big thing I didn't like about the book was the subplot to the romance. Basically, in the six months Mira had been working as a library director, things had been going wrong left and right. Plus, she had a co-worker, Jack, who was extremely unhappy about her getting the job.

As a reader, it was extremely obvious from literally the beginning who was behind everything and who was sabotaging Mira in the hopes of her losing her job. But it was not revealed until literally the climax in the last 80% or so of the book, which made the biggest part of "Love in the Stacks" very aggravating and tedious.

Mira and Chelle both had their suspicions, but not only did they not share them with the other one, they also never really did anything about them themselves? For example, I just wanted the plot to take up pace, but instead, all I got was catastrophe after catastrophe and a villain getting easily away with it despite there being dozens of clues.

This subplot also worsened the romance, because it was the reason why Mira and Chelle had to be careful. They couldn't be openly dating, but because they never really talked to each other about the sabotaging, Chelle kept trying to pressure Mira into being with her openly, flirted with her at work, and ignored it when Mira told her to not do it in public.

Plus, despite knowing they had to be careful in public, Mira was very selective about the things she actually worried over?. She had no qualms about having sex at the library or in a hotel room near the bad guy's (in a hotel with very thin walls) and also readily held hands with Chelle while literally being in the same car as , but giggling with Chelle and grabbing her hand when getting into an elevator somehow was too much? All the time, Mira kept worrying about something that seemed small but then completely dismissed a situation that she should've equally worried about. After a while, that just got frustrating.

The villain, in general, was very exaggerated. In every scene he was in, it was glaringly obvious that he was bad news;I got to the point where I was wondering how someone like him hadn’t been fired a long time ago. Literally everyone disliked him and had something to say about how rude and grumpy he was, he was never at his workplace and didn’t really seem to be doing much in the first place? He was also extremely rude towards Mira and commanded her around, and seeing as she was his superior, I had no idea how he was able to get away with so much? It was basically pushed down our throats how bad of a person he was.

His mission to get Mira fired didn't even make sense. There was a reason why she had been chosen for the job instead of him, so even if he had succeeded in getting her fired, it would've been unlikely that he was next in line. Funnily enough, the book even acknowledged this but somehow never mentioned it again. At the contrary, towards the climax, Malone pretended like he had actually a fair chance of getting the job himself, so there was a severe lack of consistency.

The climax of this entire subplot was extremely anticlimactic. Like I've already mentioned, the majority of the book focused a lot on all the sabotaging and on the villain, so I was hoping for some epic smackdown. But that just never came. The issue was resolved pretty quickly, and the way it was done was just irritating.

Last but not least, the subplot also made me really dislike the smutty scenes. They weren't badly written, but because Chelle and Mira constantly had sex in rather public places - or private places that were near the villain -, I couldn't enjoy any of them because I always expected for someone to catch them in the act. And because I'm someone who's absolutely not interested in ever seeing strangers have sex in a public place, I also got pretty annoyed at their complete disregard of others who may be around.

So, overall, I didn't really particularly enjoy this book, which was mostly due to the romance and the subplot of the sabotaging. It wasn't the worst book I've ever read, especially in terms of Kindle Unlimited romances, but it was certainly disappointing for me. I did, however, like the setting of the library and learning a little bit about working at one. That was pretty neat.

Not for me

This is well-edited in the sense of having no glaring grammatical or spelling mistakes.

But the language was clichéd and repetitive, even for romance fluff. I'm afraid the fact they start snogging in the job interview was just too much. Out at a night club, maybe, but not in the broad light of day in a professional context for the first time. It just broke my WSOD.

I didn't really know what the characters liked about each other, other than looks. Nor did I find them very likeable, full stop. Unfortunately, it all meant the erotic scenes did zero for me as well. (And I've even done the deed with a librarian in the stacks!)

I love libraries, and I actually really love the detail about the profession, but I think as a first novel, it kind of shows. I don't want to diss too hard, because I've certainly never written a novel, and unlike a lot of queer erotica, at least the writing is technically decent. Maybe I'll try another by this author, but this one unfortunately misses the mark.

Mira hires Chelle as a library page. Both are attracted to each other but Mira puts the kibosh on anything between them as they are supervisor/employee. Mira is the library director who is having a lot of problems with the library, not the least of which is Jack the research librarian who wanted Mira's job. Eventually Mira gives in to Chelle and they begin a relationship in secret. Chelle wants more and Mira is afraid to lose her job.

I enjoyed this story. Mira had a stick up her butt. Chelle was good at pushing Mira's boundaries. They do have some fierce confrontations. I have to admit I don't think I would have been as altruistic as Chelle after their last blow up. Chelle is very mature in spite of her parents' beliefs. But I did get what I wanted by the end of the story. Love wins.

Well Worth Reading

“Either she turned her back on Chelle and lost the chance to fall in love with someone who had dominated her mind in every one of her waking moments since they met.”

“Is Jack and this ridiculous library really more important to you than me?”
“Do you understand how rare what we have is?”

“She destroyed something beautiful, and for what?”

This was an absolute pleasure to read!! With every page I turned, the better connected I felt to the characters & the more drawn into & interested in this story as Chelle & Mira revealed, revered & reveled in exploring every facet of themselves & each other— hostages to the pleasure & pain, intoxication & desperation of love.

This was very much an enjoyable, pleasurable & entertaining book I highly recommend reading.

This book is about some of my favorite things in the world: books, libraries, conflicted love affairs, and lesbians. It is pretty steamy (steamier than some of the other corny -- but still enjoyable -- mainstream les-fic/lesbian romance books out there), but the slow burn element is still there...and quite burney!

My biggest beef with this work (this is the first Cara Malone book I've read, so I'm not sure if this is a common issue or not), is that -- ironically, in a book about books & library science -- it needs better editing. I read the e-book and there were quite a few typos, and it would have been closer to a 5 star read with better editing, in general. But it's definitely still readable...and enjoyable! I'd recommend it to my nerdy circle of lesbian friends!

Overall a good read. I liked the character of Chelle more, as she felt more well rounded. It's always difficult with the believability for me when there's a character like Mira, who is so career (or something else) focused and they haven't done anything romantic for years because of their drive etc etc and then they somehow are incapable of holding in their attraction at square one.

I thought also that the Jack manipulation was a little too telegraphed, and that it was perplexing as to why he broke the disc at the end. Was it on accident because he was so startled? If it was on purpose because he knew he lost, he definitely came across as the kind of person who would take down everyone with him.

At one point in my life, I think I almost lived in libraries (and they’re still some of my favorite places to visit), so I really enjoyed the setting of this book. I was also pleasantly surprised to see a couple of familiar characters make cameos in this book (though I’m not sure if this book was written before or after those characters’ books). I did find the tension a little rough: without spoilers, I’ll just say that this is a workplace romance where both love their jobs as well as coming to love each other, so it was inevitable that it was difficult for them to figure out the best way to resolve the conflict between the romantic and professional sides of each of their lives.

Having read Awakened, I enjoyed this continuation of Chelle's story. There are some editing issues, but they didn't distract from the story. I have to admit, (mild spoiler ahead)........the fact that Chelle got the job despite the way she behaved in her interview really bothers me. Her actions were immature and inappropriate. They did, however, help to emphasize her emotional growth through the rest of the book. This book is a fun, fast read, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys lesbian romance.

This book was a riot. I was so baffled by the very first few pages I couldn't help but keep reading just to see how far it would really go. Definitely started with a bang. I found myself laughing, and cheering on the main characters and their ridiculous antics.

It was a short read, but definitely didn't leave me wanting by the end of it. The story felt complete, and I was happy with the way things panned out.

Fairly light if you're not looking for anything too heavy in plot or length. HEA

Finally I got around to actually being able to sit down and read this story. I'm always impressed with the storylines and characters that Cara Malone can make and make convincingly realistic. This one may seem simple, but with the main character's twisting romance unfolding swiftly, they don't really know what to do about their feelings and their pull. They just hope to control their urges for one another, but that soon proves difficult when a coworker of theirs, named Jack, wants to try and be as annoying and difficult to them both because he never got to be the director.

It's dated, feeds on stereotypes, and features two very clueless and unethical library workers. Mira is a library director who kisses Chelle during a job interview, and Chelle just acts like a lust-addled teenage boy throughout the book. I should have stopped reading after the first scene gave me the icks, or after several subsequent scenes gave me the icks.

I regret not bailing. The last scene shows that there has been no growth between these two characters.

I regret purchasing this book.

I would have to say that of all of Cara's work I've read so far, this could be described as one of her more orthodox novels, where I think I could have predicted most of what would happen next. That being said, I found the book full of charm and the characters well flushed-out—the sort of writing we have come to expect from this talented author. Cara, keep up the good work!

Cute femme-femme romance novel.

Chelle is a new college grad who needs a job to get her parents off her back.

Mira has reached a career high-point as director of the local public library.

Sleeping with your boss and/or your employee - if steamy - is rarely a good idea.

Fun cast of characters

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway and found that it was by an author I'd read quite a few books by already. Having met the leading ladies in the other stories they appear in,it was fun to read their own story.

Excellent!

This well written book was quite enjoyable, with a reluctant heroine, a vengeful villain, and enough chemistry to scorch the whole library. Add some heat to your must read list with this one.

If you are looking for a quick insta-love read, where the characters meet and become better people thanks to one another, with a side of sexy library shenanigans, and a plot that is moved along by stupid (literally) lesbian drama, you will love this.
And if I had to make a complaint (or two), it would be that this is unnecessarily angsty, and the “mystery” of who-did-it is so bla and so neatly tidied up that—it was rendered pointless by the end of the story.
