Найбільша цінність цієї біографії полягає в її строго документальному характері. Кожна подія, кожна деталь спираються тут на спогади, рефлексії, «вузлики» пам’яті людей з близького оточення молодого Целана, що підвищує автентичність цього життєпису, робить його надійним джерелом свідчень про поета, зразком наукової сумлінності та історичної достовірності. Понад 50 осіб із цього кола – родичі, друзі, шкільні й студентські товариші, кохані подруги поета – були об’єктами опитувань автора. До появи цієї книги дослідники творчості Целана змушені були задовольнятися тільки «сухим каркасом відомих біографічних дат». Завдяки зусиллям Ізраеля Халфена молоді роки поета постають у всій своїй пластичності, барвах і повноті, й віднині перед українським читачем ши-роко відкриваються двері до Целанового світу.

Сильний бік цієї біографії – це, власне, її документальність: ви бачите чітку мапу Целянового життя від народження до еміграції в Париж, досить широке родинне дерево (про кожного з членів родини поета є принаймні дві слові), також не забуваймо про друзів, ворогів і Райнера Марію Рільке.

Усе це вписано в контекст тогочасних Чернівців, тож книгу можна певною мірою сприймати як історичну розвідку про місто з його книгами і людьми.

Попри документальний характер біографії автор не втрачає й власного голосу: наскрізною метафорою книги є «незнаний ландшафт», себто Буковина, що, на його думку, є ґрунтом для розуміння Целянової творчості.

Словом, унікальна річ — читайте.

Гэта адначасова гісторыя і чалавека (Паўля Цэляна), і месца (Чарнаўцоў у Букавіне) у цікавы, няпросты і напружаны час. Аўтар разглядае Цэляна без ружовых акуляраў, не прыхарошваючы, але падыходзячы з сімпатыяй і разуменнем да чалавечай сутнасці паэта.

Soon after the poet Paul Celan committed suicide in 1970, Israel Chalfen began to interview those who knew Celan in his youth in the Bukovinan town of Czernowitz. Tracking these people down required some work, as virtually all of Celan’s childhood acquaintances had been scattered around the world in the wake of World War II and the Nazi and Soviet occupations of the Bukovina, but eventually Chalfen was able to produce this fairly slim volume that traces Celan’s life from birth in 1920 to his departure for Vienna in 1947.

As a biography of Celan, this might frustrate many readers, because its subject remains quite mysterious and opaque. We can get little sense of Celan’s inner world, partly due to the lack of his own account of his childhood, and because he was in some respects an introverted soul. The anecdotal accounts of Celan’s peers tend to be repetitive and mainly come down to “He was extremely well-read” and “Girls liked him”.

Things do get more detailed around the time that Celan turned twenty. He began a love affair of sorts with a young actress, Ruth Lackner, who served as Chalfen’s main source of information. With the help of Lackner among other informants, Chalfen is able to connect many of Celan's seemingly hermetic poems to people, places, and events of these years. We also learn the details of how Celan was able to survive the Holocaust through being conscripted into forced labour instead.

Once Celan and Lackner grow apart as she marries someone else and Celan settles for a period in Bucharest, Chalfen’s book again becomes rather elliptical, but he does mention how Celan had another major love affair with one Rosa Leibovici, who may in fact be the “Rosa” of his late poem “Coagula” and not Rosa Luxembourg as often thought. (For more information on Celan’s Bucharest years, we are fortunate that Celan’s Romanian Jewish friend Petre Solomon published his biography of the young poet several years after Chalfen’s biography.)

So, this biography only partially illuminates its subject. However, I found the book particularly entertaining and informative for its wealth of detail on life in Czernowitz during these 25 years or so. Today Chernivtsi, as it is called, is a rather drab Ukrainian provincial town where even the Romanian minority, let alone Jews, can be hard to spot. Chalfen’s book reconstructs Czernowitz as it was when a considerable portion of its inhabitants were German-speaking Jews, old Austro-Hungarian values still held on, and the major Central European literary trends reached here as well.

Structurally coherent biographer with a quick-paced feel. Provides content so personal, thoughts of the factual integrity often arose. Author was an associate of the late Ancel, or friend of a friend, or something of the sort. Good overview of his disposition, as well as the historical conditions of his development. Recommended for any Celan fans.

Праця Халфена свого роду «камерний посібник» Буковини міжвоєнного періоду, особливо історії єврейської громади вказаного періоду та регіону. Читати текст легко, сприймати факти також. Автор, не будучи в цілому професійним автором текстів, справився з книгою дійсно непогано.

Читати легко, цікаво й при тому тема для дослідників розкрита також якісно.
