Leslie Patricelli Board Books

Mami: (Una emotiva historia sobre el vínculo entre madre e hijo para bebés y niños pequeños) (Leslie Patricelli Board Books)

Rate this book
Every day is Mother's Day as the inimitable Baby sings Mami's praises in a Spanish language board book full of humor and heart.

Now we dance. Wiggle, wiggle.
I can make my mommy giggle!

Mami gives hugs and kisses and says Baby's belly is delicious. She makes spaghetti that's yummy and cleans Baby's face and tummy. Then it's off to the park to play hide-and-seek . . . where's Mami? Simple (and silly) pleasures abound in this Baby's-eye celebration of a beloved mami.

I love Leslie Patricelli and her newest additions, Mommy and Daddy, are great! I appreciate that both titles show each parent both playing and doing the work of childcare (Daddy cooks and cleans, gives a bath, makes pancakes; Mommy is shown feeding dinner and cleaning up after, driving to the park). These rhyming books would make great gifts for new parents or fun Mother's or Father's Day reading. Both books have a spread where they show many different mommies/daddies of different skin colors and appearances and both include one same-sex couple in that spread.

Mommy and baby play together, read, draw, and sing together. They go to the park to play hide and seek, and baby sees a lot of other Mommies with other children. But baby's own Mommy is the best Mommy of them all!

This board book is so adorable! I love the simple illustrations and cute characters. The art work is bright and colorful, sure to attract the attention of little readers. Seeing the baby and Mommy playing together is so heart-warming and sweet!

There is one mention of a child having two mommies, that is included in this book. There are mommies of many races and ethnicities.

*Please note that this review covers Leslie Patricelli’s ‘Mommy’ AND ‘Daddy’ board books!

Popular author and illustrator Leslie Patricelli is the creative force behind bestselling board books like Toot (a favourite giggly read with my kids!), Quiet Loud, Hair, Tooth, and numerous other delightful children’s books. In her newest board books, Patricelli turns her attention to Mommy and Daddy (with the help of one-haired Baby, of course!). With a big open-mouthed smile and call of “Mommy, Mommy, Mommy!”, Baby brings readers into happy time with their mommy. In rhyming verses, highlighting everything from kisses, singing, dancing and giggling, to cleaning up spills on “face and tummy”, Mommy is a joyful and sweet exploration of all the amazing, wonderful, loving things that mommies do. Towards the end of the story, Baby and Mommy go and play hide-and-seek, giving readers and Baby a chance to see other children and their mommies, as well as an adorable turn for Baby to finally find their “very best” mommy. In Daddy, the story opens with an introduction to Baby’s dad who is “so big and strong” and whose “legs are so, so long”. In similar fashion to Mommy, Daddy explores the fun, active things that Baby and daddy do together, including cooking, cleaning, spinning, building, and much more. The closing pages also offer a look at other children and their daddies, and a kiss-filled closing on the “just right” daddy for Baby. In all, the Mommy and Daddy board books are delightful, happy romps- as you might expect from Leslie Patricelli’s board books! While arguably more traditional in their representations of “mommy” and “daddy”, the board books do try to include a broader diversity of people and parental representations in respective scenes. Readers who enjoy cozy, rhyming reads, or those who have enjoyed or are currently enjoying any of Leslie Patricelli’s board books starring Baby might especially enjoy the warmth and sweetness of Mommy and Daddy.

I received copies of these titles courtesy of Candlewick Press/Penguin Random House Canada in exchange for honest reviews. All opinions and comments are my own.

Wow! As a mom, I absolutely adore this board book by Leslie Patricelli! It's a delightful and heartwarming tribute to all the hardworking and dedicated moms out there. From the playful illustrations to the humorous text, every page is filled with love and appreciation for all that moms do.

This book is a perfect reminder that even on the toughest days, being a mom is the most rewarding job in the world. The witty and relatable text captures the joys and challenges of motherhood, and will have moms nodding their heads and laughing out loud.

What's more, the book's sturdy board pages make it the perfect addition to any mom's bookshelf. It's compact and lightweight, making it easy to bring along on-the-go, whether it's to the park or to a doctor's appointment. And, the durable pages can withstand the wear and tear that comes with little ones who want to read it over and over again.

Overall, Leslie Patricelli's board book for moms is a must-have for any mother who needs a little reminder of just how important and loved they are. It's a perfect gift for Mother's Day, a baby shower, or just because. So, go ahead and add it to your cart - you won't be disappointed!

Thank you to Candlewick Press and Penguin Random House for my free copy in exchange for an honest review. This is a permanent addition to our families bookshelf.

In this board book, a toddler has fun adventures with Mommy. They give kisses and hugs, dance and sing, drive, visit the park, and see other children with their mommies.

The content of this board book is toddler centric and works well for the age it is intended for and each page only has one simple concept to understand and the art is also set up to not visually overwhelm with to much information. The color and art style work well to give meaning that toddlers can understand. The baby in the story appears only in it's diaper with no gender references. This choice works well as not to make this character either which will help toddlers identify with the child. The mother and child are white cis-gender family, but they meet diverse families at the park.

This book and its Spanish language version are a good addition to any board book library. I would recommend it for purchase by any public library.

We're so proud of you for reading "Mommy"! You learned something beautiful - that mommies (and daddies too!) show love in many special ways every single day. From hugs to help, from playtime to bedtime, love is all around you!
Remember, you can show love back by giving hugs, saying thank you, and helping when you can.
You're becoming such a wonderful reader! Keep up the amazing work, sweetheart!

A heart warming story about a mommy and all the things that mommies do. A nice balance between the everyday taking care of needs and having fun. I’m not a huge fan of the writing. Nice companion to the Daddy book. Just one note: I know the baby is supposed to be gender neutral but what mommy has her baby outside in only a diaper - haha 😆.

This is a perfectly fine and sweet celebration of baby's relationship with Mommy. Focusing on daily activities is definitely less risky that talking about Mommy's qualities, which other "ode to Mama" books try to do.

I didn't care for this one. Although I could relate to the "But why, Mommy? Why?" I don't think I'm a big fan of this author/illustrator. I can't quite put my finger on why.
