The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet When Rosemary Harper joins the crew of the Wayfarer, she isn't expecting much. The ship, which has seen better days, offers her everything she could possibly want: a small, quiet spot to call home for a while, adventure in far-off corners of the galaxy, and distance from her troubled past. But Rosemary gets more than she bargained for with the Wayfarer. The crew is a mishmash of species and personalities, from Sissix, the friendly reptillian pilot, to Kizzy and Jenks, the constantly sparring engineers who keep the ship running. Life on board is chaotic, but more or less peaceful - exactly what Rosemary wants.
A Closed and Common Orbit Lovelace was once merely a ship's artificial intelligence. When she wakes up in a new body, following a total system shut-down and reboot, she has to start over, in a world where her kind are illegal. She's never felt so alone. But she's not alone, not really. Pepper, one of the engineers who risked life and limb to reinstall Lovelace, is determined to help her adjust to her new world. Because Pepper knows a thing or two about starting over.
Record of a Spaceborn Few Centuries after the last humans left Earth, the Exodus Fleet is a living relic, a place many are from but few outsiders have seen. Humanity has finally been accepted into the galactic community, but while this has opened doors for many, those who have not yet left for alien cities fear that their carefully cultivated way of life is under threat.
To Be Taught, If Fortunate Carrying all the trademarks of her other beloved works, including brilliant writing, fantastic world-building and exceptional, diverse characters, Becky's first book outside of the Wayfarers series is sure to capture the imagination.
Ariadne is explorer. As an astronaut on an extrasolar research vessel, she and her fellow crewmates sleep between worlds and wake up each time with different features. Her experience is one of fluid body and stable mind and of a unique perspective on the passage of time. Back on Earth, society changes dramatically from decade to decade, as it always does. Ariadne may awaken to find that support for space exploration back home has waned, or that her country of birth no longer exists, or that a cult has arisen around their cosmic findings, only to dissolve once more by the next waking. But the moods of Earth have little bearing on their mission: to explore, to study, and to send their learnings home.
What is the human condition? What do we strive for? What makes you happy? Becky Chambers attempts to answer this in the third installment of the Wayfarer Series with a look at the Fleet from not only within the Fleet but also from an alien perspective.
I love love love Becky Chambers. I have not read a thing from her that does not make me feel just good. Her characters are sweet, complex, flawed, and perfect. The imagination..... is absurdly amazing. This series of books is about a slew of different characters that appear in each book- the the series is not a series in the traditional sense. I loved getting to know each as each story evolved in its own unique direction. I can't wait to read her next books.
One of the best series of books I have read in a long time. It's a fantasy set in space which I enjoy, but the characters are so compelling I've passed on to people with no interest in that genre and have had similar feedback and eagerness to complete the series.
And after sitting there disappointedly realising you've finished and there will be no more, you find you've been taken on a tour of perspectives you may well have little experience of, but are the better for being made to think about.
It takes a lot for me to give a book 5 Stars, read it 5+ times in 2 years and recommend it to everyone I know. I love this series like a friend. The world building, the characters, the found family, the social and political commentary, all packed into exciting feel good stories that will make your heart swell. Read it and tell me which species you identify with the most!
So I’ve read all of these individually without knowing they were a series….. Do you think the crew from To be taught if fortunate is the human spaceship that the GC discovered and therefore set up the other books???? I just made this connection and omfg what if?????

I really really loved the first book. It’s as if the mass effect crew took endless amounts of side quests and just living their best life. Felt a little bamboozled that the following books follow different people in relation to the wayfarer, but I get it. Still recommend it 👍
Well thought out science and an introduction to new ideas is one of the marks of great science fiction. Ms. Chambers does it well with this entire series.
