There's more magic and mayhem to be had in the second volume of this fantasy Western series from the team that brought you The Sixth Gun! In a time of great magical upheaval, a group of disparate outsiders were brought together to defeat a creature of apocalyptic power. In the aftermath of their victory over him, the survivors find themselves scattered. But is fate done with them? Will their roads converge again? Shadow Roads #6-10
Cullen grew up in rural North Carolina, but now lives in the St. Louis area with his wife Cindy and his son Jackson. His noir/horror comic (and first collaboration with Brian Hurtt), The Damned, was published in 2007 by Oni Press. The follow-up, The Damned: Prodigal Sons, was released in 2008. In addition to The Sixth Gun, his current projects include Crooked Hills, a middle reader horror prose series from Evileye Books; The Tooth, an original graphic novel from Oni Press; and various work for Marvel and DC. Somewhere along the way, Cullen founded Undaunted Press and edited the critically acclaimed small press horror magazine, Whispers from the Shattered Forum.
All writers must pay their dues, and Cullen has worked various odd jobs, including Alien Autopsy Specialist, Rodeo Clown, Professional Wrestler Manager, and Sasquatch Wrangler.
And, yes, he has fought for his life against mountain lions and he did perform on stage as the World's Youngest Hypnotist. Buy him a drink sometime, and he'll tell you all about it.
Well, it's not The Sixth Gun, not exactly. But it does have some connections. After a somewhat underwhelming first volume, things are starting to pick up here and get a bit more exciting. Great combo of story and art has me really looking forward to volume 3...
Shadow Roads, Cullen Bunn, volume 1 An increasingly deep and expansive universe. Enjoyable series *** Ch1 - “Dead, but not dead. .. Alive, but not alive.” Ch2 - “U.S. Marshal Anton Karloff. There something I can help you all with?” “You’re the one needs helping, LAWMAN. We recognise no authority on these rivers but our own.” Ch3 - “That boy - that power - in the wrong hands …” Ch4 - “.. tomorrow, I will answer all of your questions.” Ch5 - “So’s unless ye got a broadsword or a pair of pistols up yer sleeve - we’re fit to be sorely outmatched.”
Kind of doesn’t justify splitting the team up again after the previous arc and perhaps takes too long to tell us what’s going on even if there is some beautiful art in hat section. The colors are particularly striking there and really throughout this series. I am surprised by the ending. Didn’t realize it wasn’t deliberately short spin-off series like the others. Hopefully we follow up on some of these threads when the original series comes back in a few years.
While not more Sixth Gun, this is probably as close as we're going to get as it's set in the same world. Unfortunately, just as we get some more world building that explains what the knife is, the story ends and it looks like that's it. They could have extended this series on forever and I would have read it.
None of the promise of the first volume pays off, several plot threads are abandoned, and the location jumping just gets silly. No further installments have come, and frankly none are desired. Don't waste your time.
