Imagine if you were there, taking notes, as a small pizza joint became one of the most successful restaurants in the world. The Domino's Story will help you understand and adopt the competitive strategies, workplace culture, and business practices that made the iconic pizza chain the innovative restaurant and e-commerce leader it is today.
As one of the most technologically advanced fast-food chains in the market, Domino's has cemented their reputation for innovation, paved in industry-leading profits. In February 2018, according to Ad Age, Domino's unseated Pizza Hut to become the largest pizza seller worldwide in terms of sales.
Rather than just tampering with a recipe that was working, they decided to think outside of the pizza box by creating digital tools that emphasized convenience and put the customer first. For the first time, the adaptable strategies behind the rise and dominance of Domino's are outlined in these pages.
Through the story of the Domino's, you'll
How to create meaningful innovation without changing the core of the product that people already love. How to recognize and take advantage of unique opportunities to alleviate your customers' pain points. How to grow a company by taking a holistic approach to the business. And, the importance of delivering a quality experience that will keep customers calling for more.
This is yet another book that I read so that perhaps you do not have to. If you're looking for a business book - this won't meet that need. There's nothing to really learn here and lots of other books that would teach what this might be trying to. And, if you're looking for a book about Domino's, this book skims so much that I don't know you've learned much here either. It was clunky - poorly written and not sequenced at all, as far as I could tell. It was reiterative with large chunks of random quotes highlighted in a business-book type fashion but it wasn't a learning call out or even really that relevant to other things going on in those pages. I would like to tell you one thing I liked about this book. And, that's how I'll end my review because I can't seem to find one (which is wildly rare - I usually try to find even the smallest of takeaways and this book was completely barren).
Audible claimed that listening to this book will take around 3 hours. So I was very skeptical whether such a short book can be useful and/or interesting. On the other hand often when I was reading much longer books I thought "it was valuable, but could be 3 times shorter".
Giving a shot was worth it. Short, full of details about running a restaurant and a big chain of restaurants. Lots of insights about the food industry: how trends were evolving over decades. Book also showed how Domino's was from the beginning "delivery-centric" pizza company.
If you like books about business but don't like books full of "great leadership and focusing on the value for the customer" - then you should give it a shot.
The story of Domino’s 🍕 is pretty rad! Especially since the Founder had a really rough childhood, bouncing around from foster homes. Amazing how he then managed to build a multi-billion dollar company from ONE pizzeria.
I have always thought that they had the best fast-pizza in SG compared to Pizza Hut and Canadian Pizza. And they are indeed the #1 pizza company in the world!
Some important takeaways were how they: - were able to find a niche in providing fast and free delivery when no one else was doing it
- reinvested a lot of profits into growth
- were able to recognise and understand the wants and needs of their top customers (students)
- focused on being as efficient and streamlined as possible
- invested a lot in technology such as their tracking system and internal POS when again no one else was doing it
- were able to cut losses and create a whole new pizza from scratch when they were making losses for consecutive years
Covers the basic facts of the company's history and evolution. Not much insightful analysis or detailed discussion of technology decisions/thought process that drove growth.
