Melisande is only 11 years old when she finds her mother, a ballroom dancer, dead at the foot of the stairs in their North Carolina home. Melisande’s memory of what happened that December night is foggy. As time goes by, the gap in her knowledge and the half-remembered images from childhood continue to haunt her. Finally, driven, she returns, years later, to the scene to discover more about who her mother was and to search for new clues to the mystery. What she finds out shocks her and leads to an agonizing, life-altering decision. Also by Sandy "The Friends of Flat Flora," the Erin Markham murder mysteries series, and historical novels “Tangled Threads,” “Bonds of Courage,” “Delia and Kate,” and “The Blue Car.”
Sandy Hill is a former newspaper editor who lives in North Carolina with her husband, also an author. She has drawn on her knowledge of tae kwon do, figure skating, strength training and journalism for some of her novels. Her Bernese Mountain Dog figures in several of her cozy mysteries.
A pleasant read about the central character, Melisande, returning to her childhood town to discover what happened to her mother years earlier. Her mother's unsolved murder has always cast a shadow over her life. Her pursuit to discover the truth is a story about self-revelation and growth as much as unravelling the mystery. A quiet, gentle read rather than suspenseful.
This book was written better than some and worse than others. The story line is pretty predictable, however, there are a few surprises. What the book does do, however, is give you an insight into the generosity of others.

The good news is this book is short and easy to read. Most of the relationships are just on the surface and despite all the thinking and talking I don't feel like I really know any of the characters. I got bored.
So easy to get drawn in. Anyone who has been betrayed will understand this story. I enjoy a book that gets you interested right from the beginning. Grab this one!
