One man. One game. One adorable baby dragon.

Two weeks ago, Hector Park cheated death by uploading his mind to the ultra-immersive fantasy RPG game, Archemi. After exposing the rotten heart of an order of dragon knights, he’s now on the run with a young queen dragon who could one day become the most powerful mount in the game.

To get strong enough to face their enemies, they need a quest – a big one. Fortunately, trouble has a way of finding Hector, and it does – in the form of a series of brutally murdered priests, a king in desperate need of a hero, and a beautiful, fiery berserker. The risk? Huge. The payoff? More gold than a dragon’s hoard.

There's only one problem - Archemi is haunted by the ghost of a mad developer bent on making the game his personal playground. And now that the world outside has vanished in a storm of nuclear fire, there's no one left to stop him.

Or at least, that’s what he thinks. Because Hector isn't the kind of man to take this shit lying down.

Got through but just barely

My issues, author has a hard time articulating his characters thoughts without cussing. It’s not that he shouldn’t but their are places in the book cussing is all there is to the dialog. I found it distracting.

Second issue is related to the first, just because his main character was in the military doesn’t mean he should be the stereotypical military man. I’ve been around a lot of military and this main character doesn’t come off as genuine. All of the same troupes for a military man just none of the depth.

Third, this series is turning into a basement dwellers wet dream. The setup for a harem is unmistakable. You know the dragon is going to become a polymorph at level 10. Their is another female that I get the feeling will soon end up in bed with the lead. Which begs the question why are all the female characters so one dimensional? Are they just a poor male author’s interpretation of a woman?

The Good points, the plot has twists and turns. Their is a beginning, a middle, and an end. The main character isn’t OP.

Conclusion, it wasn’t good enough for me to continue to invest more time in the series.

Oh gosh... this was a tad extreme. Baby dragon turns to volatile teen, and it's hilarious as heck! I didn't think Hector and Karalti were going to get through their quests, but I'm happy to be wrong.

Mini-Review: ~ LitRPG

3.5 Stars total for Trial by Fire.

I loved the hyper speed growing pains & experiences shared by Hector & Karalti, little dragon queen. The antics & conversations between them were great. Other than that, I wasn't as engrossed in the plot for this book. When I think about the parts that made up the story, I enjoyed all of them but they were not put together in a way to make the whole story shine. I found myself skimming over the fight scenes, status updates and the game wiki. The parts that were interesting, I read. The rest? Skimmed.

Pros:
- Great main character, Hector (ignoring his ethnic background because that still doesn't make sense to me) and Karalti, the dragon queen.
- Rich VR World
- Fun "detective" style case.

Cons:
- Book needs another round of edits. Grammar & spelling check.
- The use of IRL in narrative part of the story throws me out of the story. It should be used in context of dialogue, text, etc.
- Using pop culture references with nothing to back it up makes no impact on the story. It just makes the reader wonder what that was about and seem a bit pointless.
- The plot holes are getting larger and will detract from the main plot line if they are not addressed in the next book.

Note to Self: Stick with the audio for the series because I will enjoy the books more with audio intake.

Man, I was really loving this series when the sexually perverse insults began to pop up everywhere. Even the banter between the MC and his 2 week old bonded Dragon became about sexual things. That's just not right. Way to ruin such a great story. Definitely WILL NOT be reading anything else from this author.

Series continues to impress

The series continues to impress. I’m lucky enough to of discovered the books just before this one came out, so I read the first two together, and am glad I was able to! Now I just have to wait for the next one...! Luckily the author gives us a good timeline of when to expect his next book.

And on the book itself...great characters, developments as fantastic, and can’t wait to see how the dragon develops as she levels up and matures.

Cool story

This is a really cool story but I find it amusing the author has an editorial type book out called "Fix Your Damn Book" when this has a good few things wrong with it. As did the last. So many things that are explained and then suddenly forgotten, or explained and then explained again differently without apparent reason. Not game updates, new player info or anything. It doesn't overly detract from the story, just a few "hang on a minute?" Type moments. I like the story, it's fun, but it's also odd in that, there's really not an endgame now. I get the bad guy probably wanta to be king of (virtual) universe or whatever, but you'd think even a rushed job would have more failsafes in it, and what sort of qn idiot qould allow for code change to be made in game on the fly? That seems ridiculous if you know any gaming nerds at all. They all want their own private paradise, why on earth would this be any different?

Fantastically Designed and Detailed

Read this series (no, really... read it!) and enter a thoughtfully designed universe with excellently detailed races, cities, magic, politics, and plot. You will also find prodigious humor, snark, come-backs, come-on’s, and bouts of inappropriate lines of questioning. Maybe a bit of sex, too.

Not only is this world one I am most delighted to read about, it is one that would be a pleasure to game in. The races are fresh (!) and believable. Their histories, and interactions interesting and dynamic — and we haven’t even seen them all yet! Not only that, but we’ve barely scratched the surface of all the unmentioned, unseen, undiscovered, and hidden places, people, and things of the world.

As far as the game elements go, the balance is perfect for me. Good layout of stats and skills, and the thoughts behind their selection. The sheet data isn’t spammed or fluffy, but is just what’s needed at the time.

The writing is outstanding and the editing is awesome. There were only a few proper noun and gender issues, but they are negligible compared to the volume of work. And that’s another thing: this is an impressively big book! Talk about value fer yer money, folks! In a venue filled with novella-sized novels books sized like this one stand out like a full course steak dinner next to a really good burger. They’re both good, but hey: when you can get steak or a burger, go for the steak.

Lastly, the characters are awesome. Love them lots. Look at the sample and see how richly a baby dragon can be written in just a few chapters. This author is going places — grab all his books and enjoy the ride.

Highly Recommended!

I really enjoyed the setting up that the first book did. It created a great world and gave room to bring about some unique challenges that set this series apart from other litRPGs. I reviewed the first book and griped about the authors take on the stereotypical military grunt and its use throughout, very minor gripe. The same continues to hold true in this book. I also stated how I liked that the author toned down litRPGs over-tendency to incorporate swearing and pop culture references... That went out the window in this book. Seems that the MC has become much less dignified in this book and has taken on the typical litRPG MC persona. He says inappropriate/stupid things constantly, makes unconventional decisions in certain situations which really don't make sense given the better alternatives that were offered (i.e. home-made sticky bomb over flamethrower), and for some reason carries on with the mentality that this is still a game rather than his new life. It also annoys me a bit that a specific character has "no memories" outside of the game, but still says stuff like "IRL ..." while also understanding a few of the MCs pop culture references. So many inconsistencies appearing in this book. I'll leave the MC harem to other reviewers as they've touched nicely on the interesting take there. I still enjoyed the career path that the MC was taking, but everything else much less so than the first book.

It's decent, but the plot just spun its wheels in the same place for too long for me. I expected an adventure over a few more locations instead of the same city during the entire time.

Also, the dragon crush thing is just weird. I don't mind the other romantic option, but the dragon doesn't sit right.

The story is very predictable, with juvenile protagonist who acts more like a high school child that a harden veteran. The love interest is typical anime character with big boobs. The dragon was the only one that was endearing and you wanted to win in her struggles. I don’t think I will be getting the next book.

Starts out very slow and then like the first book takes a big turn, and not really for the better. Author is obssessed with the female characters body way more than I care to read about in a book. First book was definitely better.

At the close of the previous volume, Hector, now a Dark Lancer Dragon Rider, was given the infant queen dragon Karalti to care for by the Matriarch. Dragon and rider escaped from the city by the hair of their chinny-chin-chin. In a stroke of literary luck, Hector’s path crosses with a knight and mage traveling home to Valachia. They offer Hector and Karalti sanctuary and a quest to assist them. Off they go on a new adventure while distancing themselves from the Assari, or so he thought! One of my few quibbles; i.e., Early on, Hector kills a level twenty-five mage receiving one level-up to nine while his level two dragon got nothing. Very odd, this should have garnered them two to three levels each. The story progresses with the quest in Valachia revolving around the murder of several priests. Hector and Karalti continue to level and grow in many ways. In this volume, Hector and Karalti will discover prophecy, politics, subterfuge, conspiracy, and betrayal. The story develops, gets more complex, and the plot thickens. The influence of Soundbooth Studio on audio production is amazing; the piano music accompanying the reading of Hector’s skills was perfection.

Great sequel

If you liked the previous book, you should like this one too. We get more of the same and more.

Much of the story and setting gets changed in this book, as Hector is in a new location. It kind of feels like much of the previous story gets put on pause while Hector settles into the new area. The new part of the story picks up pretty quickly though, so it's not missed for long.

The dragon is a super cute character. The other main female character (Surrey?) has some good addition and story baggage to explore throughout the book. I enjoyed Hector having some allies and party members he can rely on.

The male narrator is good again and the music and audio additions are even better in this book. I quite like it, it adds some good immersion and battle hype. The female narrator got a few roles this time that gave her different voices to play with, so not all of them are the same, though some are.

One maybe downside, is that there is a short graphic sex scene near the end of the book. Could be a turn off for some people. It doesn't really bother me. Just as long as the series doesn't turn harem.

All in all, I enjoyed the book and will continue with the next one.

Like the first, the production values on the audio book are excellent, I wish more audio books would do this.

A large part of why I enjoy this book and series is Baldwin's likable characters. This book adds in several new ones you can't help but like. While there is a standard MMO story line happening, it's almost in the back ground as Hector and the growing cast is slowly uncovering the history of the making of the game, hidden meta plots happening now, and some of the danger the game is in.

This keeps the narrative interesting since it's not just watching a game plot, but is around the more real aspects of it. There's also the question of what's going on in the real world I'm hoping to get more answers about. Again, this is all a lot like Cataclysm: Viridian Gate Online but just does it better. I think because Viridian Gate feels a lot more like a standard power fantasy and Archemi doesn't.

This second book of the fantasy VRMMORPG/immersive video game is all over the place. It somehow becomes a "who-done-it?" as if Hector, the Dragon or any of the other characters were investigators or have investigating skills in this alternate reality game. But really, where is this story going?? Hector's brother Steve "died" but had been hacking the game before he "died"? So, what happened to that?? What happened to the World Pandemic and the World War going on outside of the game??
I think the author is writing by the seat of the author's pants...without any plot/theme compass, and just writing without ever connecting the dots...
Volume 1 ended with the escape of Hector with the girl-dragon which was interesting and then the story died with this volume 2.
I do not recommend this book 2 or this fantasy VRMMORPG-dystopian-real-world-died-and-just-a-few-escaped-to-a-virtual-world-immersed-in-a-video-game...

Slow to start

I really loved the first book and I loved this one too however there were some editing errors like using words twice back to back or using the wrong words normally that wouldn't be an issue until I saw he released fix your damn book a self help guide to editing. Everyone screws up at times but if your going to preach to others how to edit your stuff better be flawless. The book was good but the first few chapters didn't exactly capture my interest like book 1 did I think it was chapter e and on when it picked up and at first I thought it would be a litrpg take on the old movie se7en and we'll I wasn't right but I wasn't wrong either. I recommend it a good read

WHEN IS THE NEXT INSTALLMENT BECAUSE UGH UGH MOAR NOW!?!?!

Anyways this is basically a Lit!RPG merged with a dragon-bond fantasy book (Pern anyone?) told from an Asian perspective (which I really appreciate).

Amazing pacing of the book with pretty good tempo of highs and lows which always keeps the reader wanting to know what's next! (I marathon'd the books in 1 night * koff * ). There definitely was enough gaming elements to keep me satisfied and enough fantasy/MMORPG to really flesh out the world.

The only slight annoyance I had in this book was the fact that Suri being an amazing Berserker character was always skimpily clad. I have issues against the fantasy armor trope. But otherwise I love this book series!

Blinded

Why can't the main character see true love when it hit him in the face.

He just ignoring it going after some false love.

There so many hints that he truly loves his dragon and yet he refuses to be her mate even after knowing his love for her.

This is a new digital world so why can't he just accept it. He should not be stuck behind some false law since that world died.

If he had to choose between his dragon and the human the choice is clear. He choose the dragon due to his love for her and not being able to be separated from her. He die for her just to save her.

There just so many things that just being ignored.

Very good story though but please don't put lies into it or force the character against his will when it proven they should be together..

Amazing book!!

This series is awesome!!!!!!! I am really loving these books! The characters are cool, funny, and lovable. I can’t wait to see how the relationship between Hector and Karalti develops. I know the author and some other people would think that a romantic relationship between a dragon and a human might be weird, but I find such an idea awesome! It’s not like Karalti is an actual animal because she is sapient and has free will. Need to embrace the fantasy of Archemi. Also I really wish i could find a game that was like this book series or that a game or game series was based off this book series because that would out of this world if it was done right. They did it with the Witcher series after all. Anyways, keep up the awesome work James!!!!

A pretty decent book. I enjoyed the storyline with its twists and turns and most of the characters are interesting and likeable... so is the main protagonist, for the most time - for the rest he acts like a complete macho moron. Seriously, there are lines like "she looked like the embodiment of PMS" and "I could almost see her ovaries sweel" - color me disgusted.
Plus the book has some editing issues, typos, missing words, even confusing two of the characters at one place (I don't usually notice these kinds of things, so when it happens, it means there's a lot of it).
But overall it was interesting to read and it manages to capture (at least for me) the magic of immersing oneself into a complex game such as TES or Baldur's Gate.

Dear God.

Well I'm finished. I don't think I will continue the series. It comes off too "video gamey". I don't know what the person (whose feed I saw and used for a recommendation) liked in this book, but it is not for me.

GameRpgLit Done Very Well

I really enjoyed reading this story. This was a very entertaining action packed story. The world was very unique, and the MC was someone I would consider as a friend. I didn't like him hexing and nuking the real world, but it flows into the storyline nicely. Also, there is no such thing as a 28 year old male motorcycle stunt driver two combat tour military service virgin. Not possible. The magic system and stat system of this story is fantastic. I like the non cliffhanger ending of these books. It will be easy to pick back up for the next parts of this series.

Great sequel!

Hector and Karalti continue their flight from Ilia only to become embroiled in another devious plot in Vlachia Friends are made and lost in the race to find out who is murdering priests. Meanwhile, Hector and Karalti continue to try and avoid capture as they start drawing closer to the assassin only to find out that what they were told may not be true. Some minor editing issues, but none that greatly detract from the story. Look forward to the next book!

Good quality story

One thing I hate er we'll have a pet peeve of is wrong words or mispellings in a book. The first book was ok but this one had a few. That's what stopped me from rating 5 stars and a few points in the story there was too much in the way of history lessons or game mechanivs. However, the characters are solid and the writing is good. I'm enjoying the series and ultimately that is the point. I'm looking forward to book three

Now that our hero is in Valchia, there seems to be an issue with the king not being the chosen one. Our hero suspects the architect is responsible for this, but the offer of asylum helps him decide to go after the most gruesome murderer that ever appeared in a game.

Quite a good number of twists and surprises in this one, and good character development and our MC discovers he's good for something, perhaps even more than good.

Without ruining the story this was an amazing book with a lot of amazing parts with very little in the way of negative. The story has a lot of twists and always managed to throw you off with what's going to happen next. While I enjoy the progression of the story the dragon's lust of her rider is a bit redundant and one of those moments where you're like this again, past that it was an amazing book. I can't wait to start book 3.

So Baldur conquered the world while MC solved a single murder... kind of. Also taking spider climb instead of heal was stupid. No one cares about MC at all and all relationships are superficial. He is being dragged along clueless and without making a single decision. Also the dragon/MC are going in a weird direction.

I had to hide the review behind spoilers because him solving a murder spoils the whole book plot, thats all that happens.

Gotta Love A good Action story. Especially if it’s got Dragons and Dino’s hanging around all the time.

Always enjoy some good action scenes. Especially when you add in a bit of a mystery to the mix. I also enjoyed the progression and crafting aspects. Can’t wait for the next one.

I enjoyed the first book but the 2nd works even better as we get to see all of Hectors relationships change and a bit of good interaction between politics, action and a bit of sexual tension. The story flows along well and the narration by SBT is spot on as usual which makes this a big bonus using multiple narrators.
