Raised in a family spanning generations of witches, Elizabeth Franklin was faced with a to follow the teachings of her mother, or venture into the shadows of dark magic as her grandmother before her. In pursuing the darkness, Elizabeth would ultimately be banished to Hell in her quest for power, as she violated the sacred Witch's code through her own slave's deception. Over 150 years later, a group of teenage gamers partying in the abandoned Franklin Mansion make a grave mistake, inadvertently opening a gateway between the living and the dead. Elizabeth's spirit now set free and bound for vengeance, she returns to her plantation home with hopes to walk amongst the living once again. In the beginning of a dark trilogy, Elizabeth must find balance between the evil lurking inside her and the realization that she may have went too far down a shadowed path.
Couldn’t get past the halfway point in this. It’s so poorly written and just a knockoff of Jumanji meets The Ring.
This book is badly in need of some major editing. There are so many grammar and continuity mistakes. “I’ll be fine” said Dana “No it won’t” said Jenny.
The book constantly jumps around in ways that don’t even make sense. After the first scene it goes to “earlier that day” then a few sentences later “that was four hours ago”. However “earlier that day” is actually the NEXT day. Then it repeatedly switches perspectives with no break in chapters or even paragraphs. You’ll be reading a scene from Dana’s perspective and then she walks out of a room and you’re reading from Rachel’s perspective. Characters are constantly being introduced with no actual introduction as to who they are.
This COULD have been a good story. But it reads like an out of touch 45 year old gamer living in his mothers basement published this with no editing on wattpad.
I started this book a couple of years ago then put it aside and forgot about it until last Friday when I started reading it again in keeping with the Halloween spirit of things. I kept envisioning the story in a movie with today's special effects as I was reading, it would be fantastic.
The story follows a young woman, Victoria Franklin, who is part of a long lineage of witches both good and bad. Her grandmother who is an evil witch is training her in the dark side of witchcraft while her mother is trying to keep her from turning evil. The story starts in modern times with a group of young people playing a virtual reality game in an old abandoned house, the Franklin plantation home. Something goes terribly wrong and all but one young woman end up being murdered during the game. She ends up in a mental health institution where she is contacted by a young writer who is investigating the story. On Hallows Eve the barrier between the living and the dead is at its thinnest and if a portal is opened the dead can cross over into the world of the living. The game was the portal that brought Victoria to the world of the living.
There other spirits came through on that night who are trying to protect the young writer and the only survivor of the game night massacre when they start getting too drawn in by Victoria's pleas for help. The book has a surprise ending that you won't see coming but sets the reader up for the continuation of the story in book 2.
On All Hallow’s Eve, the spirit of Elizabeth Franklin, a powerful witch, is in Hell, literally. However, she has learned that on this eve, the veil between worlds will be at its thinnest and she may be able escape. Devising a plan with the help of her grandmother, Elizabeth is able to crossover using a portal that lands her spirit in her ancestral home. What she finds upon returning puts her into a rage.
Meanwhile, a group of gamers have arrived at an old, abandoned house that they use for gaming. With the help of a gas-powered generator, they power up the game console and excitedly insert an advance copy of a game called Time to Die. They are excited to use VR technology for the first time. After donning the VR helmets, they are amazed by the realistic and convincing graphics of the game. The monsters they have to beat to win are so lifelike, but when they start getting injured by the virtual life forms, they realize that the game’s consequences are very real.
This was a quick, enjoyable read. I loved the idea of what can happen when witches and VR tech cross paths. Beware, Elizabeth is quite brutal as she metes out punishment. There are those who set out to stop her deadly rampage, but her power is difficult to contain. Who will succeed?
I could not put this book down! Even when I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it! The author, Ron George, really brings the characters to life! I felt like I truly knew them and just kept wanting to know more as I kept reading! A great book for young adult to adult. I did not want this book to end, I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book in the trilogy. The anticipation is unreal! Definitely a must read!!
I'd been a reading slump when a friend reccomend this book. I read half it in one night with the one more chapter excuse. The characters are vibrant and the book is well researched and I really didn't see the ending coming. I'm so happy it's part of a trilogy.
This book was ok. Some of the writing was kind of cheesy to me but the historic side of it interesting. I like ghost stories that take place in old houses.
