A television star and a flight attendant walk into a bar...
Six months after a traumatic event left actress Piper Sheridan confined to her apartment with debilitating panic attacks, she’s determined to start living her life again. Motivated by an upcoming audition, she summons her courage and goes out for a drink, keeping her identity under wraps. It sounds simple enough, but nothing about going out in public is easy for Piper these days. And her hopes of going unnoticed are stymied by the bubbly blonde on the next barstool.
Flight attendant Chloe Carson is only in New York for the night, and she’s only looking for a little casual fun to go with her cocktail. The mysterious woman beside her isn’t fun, exactly…but she’s intriguing. And beautiful. Even without knowing her name, Chloe is drawn to her. When they share an unexpectedly intimate moment, Chloe knows this is a night she’ll never forget.
Can these two strangers turn a chance encounter into something lasting?
Rachel Lacey is an award-winning contemporary romance author and semi-reformed travel junkie. She's been climbed by a monkey on a mountain in Japan, gone scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, and camped out overnight in New York City for a chance to be an extra in a movie. These days, the majority of her adventures take place on the pages of the books she writes. She lives in the mountains of Vermont with her family and a variety of rescue pets.
I’ve had a rough summer, dealing with health issue after health issue, after a year of more health issues. Nothing big and everything is mostly okay but it’s been a lot and I’ve been struggling with keeping up with my reading and reviewing. I’ve read and listened to many new stories I enjoyed, yet going back to something familiar felt really good too. I knew I could count on Rachel Lacey and Come Away With Me was exactly what I needed, the perfect feel-good audiobook.
I loved both MCs when I first read the book and I think I love them even more now that I’ve heard Lori Prince voice them. They’re both very good characters and I also love them together. I relate very much to Piper’s panic attacks (I didn’t write this in my original review but I have my own subway PTSD, or rather, my PTSD gets triggered—or used to get triggered—by the subway), which makes her special to me and at the same time, she’s a TV star on her way to become a Hollywood star, and our lives couldn’t be more different. So I get to at once escape with and relate to a character deeply.
And Chloe… I could fall for Chloe. She’s sweet and kind and fun, always ready for an adventure or a quiet evening with a puzzle. She’s there for the people she loves without being overprotective. And—this I wrote in my first review—her reaction to Piper telling her she loves her is the realest and the most adorable.
Lori Prince brings all the emotions and smiles, the love, the frustrations, and the happiness to life with her usual talent and gusto.
If you’re feeling blue and need warmth in your ears, or if you just want a pretty story and lovely characters, this is the audiobook for you. 4.5⭐️

This is my fourth book by Rachel Lacey and she has become a go-to author for heartwarming books.
In Come Away with Me, Piper is an actress on her way to stardom but a traumatic experience has left her with panic attacks on top of the anxiety she’s always known. She’s about to audition for a part in a Hollywood movie and wants to master her fears before they stop her from reaching her dream. One step towards this goal is to go out to a bar and have a drink. Little did she expect to meet someone then. Chloe is a flight attendant from North Carolina who just wanted to have a drink in a gay bar on her night in New York. An unexpectedly nice evening with a mysterious woman in a black wig leaves her hoping for more.
I fell in love with both MCs immediately. I love Chloe’s laidback attitude and general sweetness. I love how much she cares for her family and the way she takes Piper’s issues in stride, showing support without stifling her. I also love Piper’s strong will, her ambition with just the right amount of ego. And I love them together.
It’s always very nice to have characters for whom communication isn’t taboo. There’s a little conflict but it’s realistic, not forced. Opening oneself to love, making a long-distance relationship work, navigating being in different places – both literally and figuratively, dealing with the expectations of celebrity, none of that is easy. Piper is the one with anxiety but Chloe can be vulnerable too and her reaction to the I-love-you scene is one of the loveliest I have read. And the chemistry! Wow.
I had one issue with this book, but I really can’t fault the author for it. On the contrary, it’s another proof of how well written the characters are. When Piper’s first panic attack is described, my idiot body felt it too. My brain wasn’t having a panic attack but my body was. As strange as that feeling was, it definitely didn’t stop me from enjoying this book and I was very happy to find out that there will be at least one more in this series.
Even though it’s book 3 in the Midnight in Manhattan series, Come Away with Me can be read as a standalone. Dragonfly, where Piper and Chloe first meet, is Josie’s bar from Don't Cry for Me, and the characters from It's in Her Kiss are mentioned in passing, but that’s all. I strongly recommend reading the other books however, if only because they’re really good too.
I received a copy from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is my fourth Rachel Lacey lesfic book, and the third in her Midnight In Manhattan series. You can read them stand alone, the only connection is the bar where our love interests meet, is the same one from Book 1, and the bartender/owner Josie makes a small appearance, chatting to customers. But I really do recommend them all! All available on Kindle Unlimited.
I'm usually a hater of celeb based romance, because other authors utilize it for drama and angst on our protagonists, but Rachel Lacey doesn't do that with these celebs, which I am eternally grateful for. She treats them just like normal people, with normal human fears and vulnerabilities, and their jobs albeit slightly different from the norm, aren't treated that different either. There's no huge ego or dramatics, pushy agents or managers twirling their villainous moustaches in the background.
Piper Sheridan is a Bisexual TV Star on a popular 'Law and Order' type of programme where she plays an assistant district attorney. Chloe Carson is a flight attendant who has just bought her own home in North Carolina where her parents and niece live, and is looking into a new career in interior design. They both happen to meet at the bar in New York one night, Piper struggling with her anxiety disorder, and Chloe being chipper and talkative. Both are immediately drawn to one another, and chat away the night, getting to know each other; letting secrets and vulnerabilities out. Piper is wearing a wig to stop her from being recognized, and doesn't tell Chloe her name, but Chloe gives her phone number. They connect again unexpectedly on a flight, and have a holiday romance that sucks them both in deeply. They decide to continue to try and do long distance and see where this goes, since they both feel strongly for each other.
Piper is trying to quell her anxiety to audition for a big budget box-office film rom-com that could really set off her career apart from TV. She gets the part but that means 3 months long distance for the couple. Chloe starts getting jealous, which was realistic with anyone trying to work at long distance relationships - there's always that sting of realizing someone has a whole life and set of experiences without you, but thankfully it doesn't become a huge issue - they actually talk and communicate like adults!!! I KNOW, AMAZING!!!
I really loved them as a couple, they are very sweet and caring and their honesty was touching. The story is fairly easy breezy, not much angst or drama which I personally preferred. Just a very soothing read of two ladies finding something special in each other and making it work despite their differences.
4.5☆ I love this series and I would love to have a bar like the Dragonfly near by. Touching love story with Piper and Chloe. It's crazy what one incident can do to someone, PTSD is a bitch to overcome. I'm happy Piper could do it with the help of Chloe and their love.
This is third in a romance series that's only loosely connected. You don't need to read them in order.
This was a very lovely romance with two women from very different worlds. Having a successful actress as one of the main characters is an invitation to wish-fulfillment but I didn't get that feeling in this one. Maybe because Piper had so much more going on with her than a successful acting career?
Indeed, Piper is a bit of a mess with panic attacks that have made her a hermit for a while. I liked how this invited the caring side of Chloe without making their interactions all about Piper. This is really well done because you can see how engaged they both are with each other pretty much from the jump. And while they didn't make the UHaul joke, they did kind of live it. I mean, Piper invites Chloe to move into her rental their second meeting and that's fast even if they're only on a weekend vacation in the same place.
And from there the story becomes about how they're going to fit two very different lifestyles together. I actually liked seeing them confront those tough realities. They connected fast, but that left a lot of conflict for them to work out together due to their differing life situations.
I do wish that Lacey had better established
Anyway, this was 4½ stars that I'm rounding up because I just liked both main characters so much. Both individually and together. I liked their care for one another and that they were determined to make it work despite serious obstacles in the way.
A note about Steamy: There are a couple of explicit sex scenes putting this in the low end of my steam tolerance. There's some minor playing around after the intimacy is established, but Lacey mostly skims later events. And I think that was pretty perfect.
Third book in the series and while they can all be read as stand alone I do appreciate the little details you get and understand when reading them in order. So far this is my favourite of the series.
Piper is an actress who struggles with anxiety. She goes out to Dragonfly one night, she in disguise and meets Chloe the flight attendant. Chloe takes everything in stride with her easy going bubbly personality. I instantly liked both characters, for their differences, but also for the their great match.
Rachel Lacey writes these feel good romances that do just that. And I’m happy to report the formulaic dark moment is missing in this book, which makes me incredibly happy.
audiobook re-read: I bumped this up a star, Lori Prince’s narration added even more to the story that I enjoyed, but didn’t love as much as the others in the series.

3.5 stars. I enjoyed this overall. I thought it was a quick and light read, with enjoyable characters whose dynamic I liked seeing play out on page. It didn’t quite get into my gut the way the first two books did though, and I thought that maybe the ended wrapped up a little quick and felt just the tiniest bit rushed? It was certainly an enjoyable read that I would rec, but it didn’t have that extra thing that will make me want to come back and revisit it a lot, I don’t think. It might end up with a higher rating when I listen to it as an audiobook once that finally comes out thought, bc I can already picture Lori Prince’s possible performance for Piper, and I’m deeply excited to experience that.
I’m a sucker for celebrity romance so this is so up my alley. Having said that, the book really centred around the MCs character and not so much on the celebrity status; Piper is portrayed just like your average Jane with flaws. And Chloe was loveable and supportive. These 2 can talk and they communicate a lot with each other; talked about their fears, family and what they both want in their lives. Very little angst and drama.
I really enjoyed this. Chloe and Piper really fit together and the little bit of angst between them was not over the top. It was real. I liked what Cathy said to Chloe near the end, "start living your life for you." And so she did.
Brilliant.

The fourth book I've read by this author. Another one I've rated 5 stars on Goodreads, and third I've put on my 4.75 stars shelf (other one landed on 5 star book). Second book with a panic-attack suffering actress. This time a tv/movie actress instead of stage (Broadway) actress. And, instead of it being a actress/actress relationship, it's a "celeb non-celeb" relationship.
Right, so. A woman in disguise visits a particular bar called Dragonfly in Brooklyn. The same bar seen in the two previous books in this series. She's wearing a black wig and hoping no one recognizes her. She is suffering from PTSD and is trying to "get back to herself". So she's in a bar instead of spending yet another night in her apartment. Her idea is to drink one or two drinks then leave. "Unfortunately", someone sits next to her at the bar. Strikes up a conversation. Oddly she, the as yet unnamed POV character (I forget if she's been named yet in the book, I meant unnamed in this review, though she does make a point of neither giving a fake name nor her real name to the woman who sat next to her and mentioned that she was Chloe).... Right, I need to stop writing sentences inside sentences. Right. So. Oddly the as yet unnamed character finds herself talking with Chloe, then going farther by going on a walk with her - a walk to Brooklyn Bridge Park (a park I've been to, just as I walked across the Brooklyn bridge a few times, and just like I used to work in a building right on the other side of bridge in Manhattan).
Chloe gives her number to the never named mystery woman and returns to her job as a flight attendant. She doesn't really expect to be contacted but helps she is. Also, before they part, Chloe stresses how much she loves spending time in the Cayman islands. Which I mention because the mystery woman, now known as Piper (to the reader and to herself) decides to push herself even further by vacationing in the Cayman's when her shooting schedule has her ending early on a Friday.
She's a semi-famous actress on a hit tv show, by the way. Up for a part in a movie. These factoids being important to the later story.
Chloe and Piper run into each other again on a flight to the Cayman islands. Chloe as flight attendant and Piper as passenger. Piper & Chloe get all friendly and stuff in the Cayman's, and start a relationship. Roughly a year passes. Important angsty type stuff also happens. No one appears to have a pet cat or dog, though a niece has a cute hamster named Oreo.
Good book. I could have lived without the epilogue which almost made me lower this a whole star.
I believe I've now read all of this author's w/w novels except for Hideaway which is 8th in a multiple author series. And one or two short stories. Everything else is m/f.
Piper and Chloe met at a bar called Dragonfly which was the setting for the first book in this series (all of the books in this series can certainly be read as standalone books). Piper, having suffered panic attacks since witnessing a horrific suicide on the subway was just looking to cross an evening out off of the list she made with her therapist. Since she was a celebrity she was incognito. When Chloe, a flight attendant, sat down next to her and struck up a conversation, Piper pushed her comfort zone and chatted with her. The two spent several hours walking through Brooklyn without Chloe knowing Piper’s real identity.
When they happened to meet several weeks later on a flight to the Caymans, they decided to spend the weekend together. What followed was a really sweet journey through the beginning stages of their relationship where they navigated the treacherous waters of long distance love. There wasn’t a lot of angst or unnecessary drama, but instead just a nice story of two normal women falling in love!
Updated review: Lori Prince continues to do an amazing job narrating this series. The emotions she’s able to convey through her performance makes my heart so happy. She held steady with Chloe’s southern accent throughout and even maintained the voices of characters from the other books in the series. Amazing job! I received a copy of the audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed reading Ms. Lacey’s very romantic and very real love story. I appreciated greatly, the fact that both protagonists had to confront multiple obstacles for their relationship to bloom. What I most appreciated was that the obstacles were believable and so were the ways in which they were dealt. If there was any weakness at all, was the feeling that the solution was more evident to the reader than the characters. I also think that the early chapters dealing with how the lovers met was as innovative and as interesting as any introductions to a romance novel I have encountered. I have ordered a few more of Ms. Lacey’s books and look forward to reading them.
EDIT (06/04/25) I did definitely enjoy this more the first time I read it. I think part of that is because I'm currently in a pretty bad reading slump. I did still enjoy it and I won't change my rating since I loved it so much the first time around. I still think the way the ending came to be was a little disappointing.
(02/09/24) Once again, another amazing book by Rachel Lacey.
Normally I'm a fan of slow burn (and this isn't a slow burn) but I still loved it. I loved all the characters, like I always do in her books. The writing is amazing and really easy to get through. I have to say, I didn't love the last ~40 pages as much as the rest but it's still amazing. Can't wait to read even more of her books.
I enjoyed this book and how they handled their long distance relationship. Piper’s anxiety was written very well and you could really feel what she was going through. Chloe had her own personal issue as well and they seem to help each other. The series is very good and I look forward to reading the next book.
Loved this. Appreciated the author’s depiction of PTSD and how difficult it can be to learn to cope with the lasting side effects. Long distance romance is such a crap shoot. Kept me guessing and hoping for their HEA. Wasn’t sure which one would break first.
Pretty great book. Piper is a famous TV star trying to overcome anxiety, and Chloe is a flight attendant looking for something different in her life. I loved the way they met at the bar, with Piper being mysterious about her identity. The progression of their love story was really sweet.
Overall, a good read! Can’t wait to read the next book in the series!
There’s nothing really *wrong* with this book, I just found it not particularly exciting.
I think femme-femme low-angst is great for some people but not me. The saccharine family stuff and the not-dramatic relationship with its cookie-cutter vanilla FTB scenes made for just an okay read.
Chloe is the perfect girlfriend until she gets a personality transplant at the 81% mark and makes things unpleasant for a minute. Piper’s main personality is she has PTSD/anxiety and is hot. Things are resolved in a way that Chloe is the only one who really has to make a big change, and I felt that because Piper is rich and famous, her needs and wants come first in the relationship.
I know this author has a number of successful books, so obviously this type of story sells. I admit I prefer a butch-femme dynamic and a bit more excitement/intrigue.
There is a lot of repetition along the way, for whatever reason the MCs feel the need to summarize their entire relationship until that point with random people (including the bartender who I believe is featured in one of the previous books in this series). There are a lot of showers, meals, family stuff with prerequisite quirky kid-things, etc.
It is the third book in a series, but I didn’t read the previous two and most likely won’t (unless they are free like this one was). I don’t feel like I missed any major plot points. Each book features a different couple and they don’t really overlap much outside of the bar.
If idyllic, comfortable, and low-angst romances are what you like, then I recommend this book.
Memorable quote:
My overall rating: three stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spicy pepper rating: two and a half spicy peppers 🌶️🌶️
FTC DISCLAIMER: I RECEIVED AN E-ARC FROM THE PUBLISHER THROUGH ONE OF A VARIETY OF SOURCES. I VOLUNTARILY OFFER MY HONEST REVIEW OF THE BOOK, THOUGH IT IS NOT EXPECTED OF ME! RECEIPT OF THIS BOOK IN THIS MANNER DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR THE CONTENT OF MY REVIEW!
Having read all of the preceding books in the series made reading this book a no-brainer, but thanks to some changes in my private home life, I was even more eager to read this book than usual. I have to admit, I really enjoyed this story!
I appreciated how strong Piper was after tragedy brushed her, especially in trying to get her life back on track. She was essentially trying to give herself a rebirth, and I totally identified with that! I loved how Chloe entered her life, just when she seemed to need her the most, and how Chloe seemed to shake her up just enough for Piper to want to take the risks she did. I liked Chloe overall, but her martyr complex in regards to her twin got a bit much for me at times, and I really wanted to throttle her! The complex wound up getting in the way of the relationship she built with Piper, and wound up rushing the ending slightly as a result.
All things considered, this was a great installment in the series, and a welcome look through a new lens for me. I'm very glad to have read this book!
While this is the third book in the Midnight in Manhattan series, it can totally be read as a stand alone novel. In fact, other than a couple of scenes in the bar from book one, there is very little carry-over with these characters. However, I would recommend the other books from the series simply because they are great reads. Anyway this story features Piper, an actress that is trying to overcome a recent trauma that she witnessed, and Chloe, a flight attendant that is about to make a major life change. Of course, their lives are both going to change in a very unexpected way after a chance meeting in a bar. Even though this romance features a pairing between a famous actress (or relatively so) and a "normal" person it reads more like two ordinary characters dealing with the complications of life and long-distance romance. To me this made Piper even more likeable because she never came across as a snooty star, banking on her fame rather than on who she was as a person. The overall effect just pulled me into the story from the first paragraph and had me rooting for them to make it as a couple! All in all a very enjoyable romance.
Now that I’ve finished the whole Midnight in Manhattan series, I can’t decide which I love the most. I guess all of them! 5 stars to this book because I love the series too much😄
I usually don’t binge read from the same author because I feel like I would notice a similar story pattern if I read from the same author’s book at once in a short time(I don't know if this sentence makes sense, it’s 2 am and I’m too tired to think in English😂) But Rachel never gives me those feeling, she delivered three unique celebrity romance, and each of them had surprised me. Highly recommend the whole series, and I hope there’s going to be a book 4!
I have read the first 2 books in the series. The first book needed to be read I think in order to truly get the most of the second. In contrast, this book stands very well on its own and I think by far is the best of the bunch. So you could read this book as a 1 off but from the back blurb it appears there is at least 1 more book coming in the series so you may need them all to tie it all together. Again all three are worth your time but again, I think this is the best and rates a 4.4 stars. I await the next.
I read this book in one sitting, that’s how good Come Away with Me, is. Do yourself a favor and snag this book up. Piper and Chloe, there was something so natural about them and their developing relationship. It was easy to get lost in the pages and forget time passing me by as I read.
Piper Sheridan, an actress who is suffering from crippling anxiety after witnessing a horrible moment, starts living her life again. In slow steps from her therapist’s recommendation, she sets small goals for herself because she’s determined to land a career changing moving role. She goes to the Dragonfly bar, identity hidden, and she bumps into flight attendant Chloe Carson. Chloe is kind, funny, and makes it easy for Piper to work through her anxiety. This chance encounter sparks a relationship between the two women.
I loved, loved, loved, the fact that Chloe was supportive of Piper. As someone who deals with anxiety every day, I could relate. Chloe encouraged Piper slowly, but she was there for her in the aftermath as well.
The attraction between the two women sparked from the first meeting and it was fun. The more the saw each other, the more intense it became. Their kisses? *fans self* Ooh boy, those kisses probably had my cheeks all flushed.
Even though distance kept them apart due to their work, they found a way to make their relationship work. I loved the fact that Piper traveled to North Carolina and met the people important to Chloe. I feel like we don’t get that enough in books and this just tickled me.
First of all, i think this is the fastes i ever read a book. I startet yesterday evening and i couldnt put it away, sadly i had to sleep a few hours and also work a short day but than took it again right the moment i came back home. Why? Because its THAT GOOD. Im always a lover of celebrity meets "normal" girl storys, so I had high expectations. In this story we get to know Chloe and Piper, they meet while the actress Piper is fighting agains her demons in a bar in NYC, they hit it of and couldnt stay away from each other. We follow their paths, its very well written, i had the feeling im in the middle of it, both charakters are very likable. What i loved the most about this story, Piper wasnt some Cliché of an actress. I will most definitly grab more books from Rachel Lacey in the future, and even start to check out the other books of her Midnight in Manhattan Serie.
Piper struggles with severe anxiety that has heightened after an unfortunate circumstance. She is trying to get control of her life again. She goes incognito to a bar and ends up having a conversation with Chloe. Chloe is a flight attendant and just happens to be in the bar striking up a conversation with the beautiful stranger, who will not give up her name. After a stroll through Pebble Beach and an awesome kiss, they part ways. Fate is with them again as they meet again on a plane to Cayman Islands. Rachel Lacey is becoming one of my favorite authors, she portrays anxiety well as well as the loss of a loved one. The chemistry is excellent and both characters are relatable. Very little angst. Beautiful descriptions of the views. Greatly enjoyable read.
Piper Sheridan is an actress working on a tv series in NYC. She also has been having panic attacks after an incident at a subway station. While working on her anxiety issues she goes into a bar and meets Chloe Carson. Chloe is a flight attendant based in NC. They meet again a week later when Piper decides to take a weekend in the Cayman Islands. From there a romance is started. They just need to figure out how to do long distance.
This is a low angst romance with likable characters. They can talk and support each other. A nice find on Kindle unlimited. I will look for more stories by the author. (This evidently is a third in a series that all feature the same bar. But easily read as a stand alone.)
This was a great book. Perfect really since I just got home from the smokies. It won’t change your life or make you ponder why we are even on this earth. BUT it is absolutely ever so much fun to read. It’s sappy and romantic and extremely well written. I loved it.
