The Reliance fast-forwards three years after The Redemption finishes (this is book 2 in the series). It starts out with a bang that leads to a chain of events that I never expected to happen. The "old" characters were still great and the new ones were as well--villainous pirates, ladies in distress, etc.

I didn't enjoy this storyline as much as book 1, but it was still fun and entertaining. I didn't like to see how quickly Merrick threw everything away or how fast Charlisse jumped to conclusions. But without those incidents, it wouldn't have been the story it was. Basically, their town is attacked and Merrick believes his wife is dead, so he throws his faith, friends, life etc out the window. Charlisse isn't dead--she's actually captured by an enemy pirate and manages to escape and sets out to find her husband, whom she believes has abandoned her.

Avast, me mateys! What a wild ride this one be! Slap on an eye patch, grab a parrot, and set sail for a grand adventure with Captain Merrick and Charlisse. Book 2 is every bit as enjoyable as book 1.

What attracts me the most to this series? Besides the hunka-hunka Captain Merrick, I suspect it's the theme of honor and integrity carried out by characters that are realistically flawed. Doubt wars with faith, strength with weakness, in both Merrick and Charlisse...and even in the dastardly villain.

Tyndall is a master of character development and rope-dangling scene endings. Once you begin reading, your everyday life will be thrown in the hold until the last page.

A Frank review of M.L. Tyndall's The Reliance: She's Gone and Done It Again.

Christian piracy sails on. Tyndall's second installment to her LEGACY OF THE KING'S PIRATES trilogy, The Reliance, is another swashbuckling page turner. Chapter one of this "historical romance" opens with our hero and heroine lounging on a beach in Porto Bello, Panama--where we'd all love to lounge. Three paragraphs later, still on page one, musket and cannon fire shatter all romance. Our sunbathing lovers are interrupted by pirates sacking the town. That's how fast Tyndall moves. Not fast enough?

Captain Morgan sacks San Lorenzo. Merrick and Charlisse fight their way out of town on Don Deigo's stallion, pistol and musket fire snap close behind. On the road out of town, they find a church full of abandoned orphans. How to save them from advancing pirates? Merrick leaves Charlisse to hide the children in the church, and goes in search of a wagon. As Merrick rides away from the church, the building, where he's just left his wife, explodes. As does his soul. That's page twenty-three, the end of chapter two. Not fast enough?

By page twenty-six we discover that Charlisse is alive, but kidnapped by Captain Kent Carlton, leftover bad-guy from book one, The Redemption. Merrick searches the rubble, then sinks into despair's depths.

If you're wanting a romance novel about dating and what to wear, this ain't it. Well, Charlisse does cross-dress a couple of times, in order to visit a pirate port, and captain her husband's vessel. Yes, chick-lit readers, Charlisse captains the Redemption. She even gives the order to fire a broadside at her rum-swilling soon-to-be-ex-husband's new flagship, the Satisfaction.

In the course of middle chapter soul-wringing, we're tortured by main characters' ships that pass in the night, their honest motivations and terrible pain.

The Reliance has many plot subtleties, but peel these onion layers for yourself, and enjoy. This Tyndall woman can write. If you're able, start with The Redemption, in order to meet living characters in living color.

The Reliance picks up three years after the end of events in The Redemption -- Lady Charlisse is married to her honorable pirate captain, Edmund Merrick, but they have spent precious little of their three years of marriage together. Merrick's drive to rid the Caribbean of vicious pirates has kept them separated. Just when the hope of establishing a family and some stability begins to take root in Charlisse's heart, she and Merrick find themselves caught in the midst of a pirate attack led by Henry Morgan. Their old nemesis, Kent Carlton, kidnaps Charlisse and stages her death, sending their lives into a whirlpool of danger and intrigue.

I love that Tyndall chose to explore Charlisse and Edmund's marriage. All too often you read a novel, fall in love with the characters, and never learn more of their lives after the initial romance. Tyndall takes Edmund and Charlisse through a series of trials during their forced separation that tests not only their commitment to each other but also to their faith. When everything else is stripped away, Edmund and Charlisse learn to rely on God's unwavering faithfulness in the midst of life's storms.

The Reliance has all of the action and adventure that made its predecessor such a fun, engaging read. Tyndall has a wonderful way of expressing faith in her novels -- a relationship with God is a living, breathing presence in the lives of her characters that are believers. She succeeds in making faith a vibrant, real part of her characters' lives without coming across as preachy. One issue with this sequel, however, is that it didn't feel quite as tightly plotted as The Redemption, and at points the timeline of events was somewhat muddied. That aside, I applaud Tyndall for crafting a highly enjoyable tale that delved deeper into the lives of her hero and heroine, strengthening their faith walk as well as their relationship with each other.

Honestly, I haven't read (or been able to read) a book in a day for too long. So when I spend one of my rare free days only reading this, you know it's good.

This is the thrilling and emotional sequel to The Redemption. Charlisse and Merrick experience many more harrowing times, but the ending is so much sweeter as a result.

This book, like the first, does have some themes for more mature readers. I'd say 18+, but that's coming from a Christian who doesn't read explicit or "spicey" content (which there was nothing explicit, and only a little romance in this book). There is a lot of depravity amongst the pirates in these books, as you'd probably expect. However, this - and many other - aspect made me like the book even more, and made it feel that much more real and captivating, as you wait to see how things end up.

If you love excitement, 1600's sea adventures, realism, God, and relatable, well-written characters, then I would highly recommend these books for you.

Five stars!

Swashbuckling Romance at it's finest!

The story of Captain Edmond Merrick and his beautiful wife, Charlisse continues in this second book in the Legacy of the King’s Pirates. They have had their share of problems and separations but as the story opens they are enjoying some beautiful and peaceful time together and are looking forward to the birth of their first child. They are visiting friends in the Caribbean, when the town is attacked by a band of pirates being led by an evil monster from their past. He is set on destroying their lives.

While trying to get Charlisse back to his ship and away from the horrors of the attack, Capt. Merrick leaves her in the safety of a church, only seconds later to witness an explosion that wipes out the church and all of his hopes for a future with his wife.

After witnessing what he thinks is the death of his lovely wife, Merrick turns his back on the God that could have stopped this from happening, and returns to the life of the evil pirate he once was. When Charlisse is taken captive by the man she fears most, her faith in God wavers also, especially when she thinks she has been abandoned by her husband, and the life of her unborn child is threatened. During this ordeal she comes to realize she must rely on God to be her strength and protection.

Aboard ship Charlisse meets a young woman, Lady Isabel Ashton, that has also been taken captive, and because of her, Charlisse has some protection from the lustful captain. When they finally come into port, Charlisse sees Merrick’s ship and hope rises that he will rescue her. With help from an unlikely source, Charlisse and Isabel escape from their captor, only to be find out that Merrick is not with his ship but has taken up with another pirate in search of whom he thinks is the main cause of Charlisse’s death.

Will Merrick see the error of his ways…will he listen to that still small voice that he hears speaking to him, or will he keep drowning his sorrows in rum and forget God? How long will it take for Charlisse to find Merrick and when she does, will her love for him be able to survive what her eyes see and her heart cannot believe? Will they realize their only hope for survival is their full reliance on God to see them through?

WOW! What a wonderfully written book. If you like excitement, romance, and a dashing pirate thrown in, then this series is for you. MaryLu Tyndall is a talented writer, from the first page to the very last word printed, she had my full attention. She beautifully weaves a story that will pull you in so that you can almost feel the wind blowing on your face and smell the sea air. But what I really loved was the way she balanced the vileness of the pirates with the marvelous wonder of an awesome, powerful God. This is definite must read, I promise you won’t be disappointed matey!

Reliance on a Great Faith-filled Read

MaryLu Tyndall's iconic pirate turned hero by God's amazing grace rocks with romance, danger, humor and faith. Best of all her excellent gift with words reminders the reader that God loves each of us and yearns to be our dearest friend throughout life's adventures.

Truly loved everything about Charlisse in this one, she is tough but also so gracious. Her and Merrick suffer a lot of setbacks in this one and as wonderful as Merrick is, he disappointed me. I really thought he would be more humble when he realized what was going on. I'm glad Charlisse forgave him, but I thought he would earn back her trust instead of pouting the way he did. However, just goes to show that even the most worthy heroes have flaws and deserve second chances. Sloane remains my favorite character and it was such a pleasure reading how Charlisse becomes the new captain of The Redemption, how the crew follows her lead despite their grumbling. Her faith, her loyalty, and her heart remain unmatched. No one writes pirate stories like Tyndall and it was a treat seeing more of Charlisse and Merrick's story :)

This book was not an easy read. I cringed to see how a Merrick changed. I would have liked to have seen mention of he and Charlisse honestly discussing what happened while he thought her dead.

I have actually read this series before but after 10 years I couldn't remember the story.

This is the 2nd book in this series and it didn’t disappoint, I had read reviews for this book before reading it and everyone was saying this book was as good or better than the first, they were not wrong, the book had more anticipation, more mystery, more suspense and I couldn’t wait to turn the next page to find how the story would continue. This book had many heart wrenching moments as cried along side Charlissa in her plights.

Charlissa and Merrick are now married and she is pregnant and when she is kidnapped and it looks to Merrick that he lost both her and the baby, as no-one could have survived after the building she was in exploded. Merrick wants revenge and becomes an angry man, mad at god and the world. Charlissa knows Merrick thinks she is dead, her hope is that he will look for her, but when that doesn’t seem to work, she takes matters into her own hands and the first chance she gets, she escapes from her kidnapper and takes Lady Isabel with her. Finding her way back to her husbands ship, she is more than surprised to find his crew both no Merrick. This book takes you on a adventure across the water as Charlissa tries to find her way back to Merrick and how her faith in God doesn’t leave her even when she goes through some pretty hard things. I loved this cute story.

I'm giving this three stars because the writing is strong enough to warrant it, but swashbuckling pirate stories must not be my thing. I wasn't keen on this second kidnapping Charlisse underwent plus other things, but don't let that deter you. If you like this sort of book and would like to try it with a Christian twist, this is the second book; read no more if you want no spoilers (but they are romance as well, so not too much of one here.) The average rating is 4.25 with this making it 1100, so that should put this in perspective for you.

Bent on revenge against Captain Merrick, a pirate fakes the death of Charlisse and takes her prisoner, although he finds he doesn't really want her for anything else other than a companion to his other kidnapped women. There is plenty of mayhem and adventure. Charlisse is a strong woman despite doubts that arise at times. In the meantime, Merrick, who is convinced she's dead, does not handle things well.

This book drove me nuts. The characters had just gotten married and were barely together when they got separated and then stayed separated the entire book. The separation was dragged out way too much and one thing after another kept happening where they made such stupid choices.
I hated Merrick by the end. He was such a jerk there wasn’t anything likeable. If it was real life I’d be telling Charlisse to stay away from him. Charlisse’s loss was kinda explained away by some weird theology. And Sloane coming to Christ didn’t feel too believable.
I loved her series in Brazil and wanted to love this. I still read it quickly but I was mostly annoyed by the characters and just wanted them to be together and I wanted to see them work together and fight pirates together not separate I guess.
I kinda wanna know Isabel’s story but I also hope she doesn’t end up with a rapist so I’m not sure if I’ll read any more .

I struggled a little bit with this book. The book is about pirates, and honestly a romance book about pirates comes with a certain amount of squiggy feelings, purely because of the nature of the situation. I think maybe a struggled with this because it was Christian Fiction? There were a lot of really difficult and compromising situations that the main characters found themselves in, and then because Jesus loves everyone somehow all is forgiven and everything is ok with 0 negative ramifications. I don’t know, I think I wanted a little bit more comeuppance for certain characters. Or perhaps for things to turn out differently than they did. That being said, it was a really well written story with compelling plot and characters!

PIRATES WITH A SPIRITUAL MESSAGE

This is the second book in the series and I can honestly say it is as good as the first if not better. The story has lots of action, and if you like sailing, lots of adventure on the high seas. It has a strong Christian message and explains in detail how to have a personal relationship with God. I still have some trouble believing Pirates might be Christians, because of their behavior of killing others in battles and drinking rum and stealing treasures from others. All in all, it is a good tale if you don't mind the preaching of the gospel here and there.

Thriling and surprising

Talk about equality for women! How about a woman commanding a pirate ship in the 1600,s? A continuation of the characters and story you didn't want to end in the first book, you are thrilled as. Mutinies are stopped. Storms are settled and miracles happen while hearts are changed!

A well written story with interesting characters and plot. However, the pirates life is not for me! I wasn’t able to get past some major piratey-themes in this book that I felt were too heavy handed (pillage, rape, murder) so it wasn’t a very enjoyable read for me.

Oh, just another fantastic MaryLu Tyndall read! Her books are so exciting and deal with Christ in such a realistic way. This book points out that even as Christians, we can fall from our ways but we can always be forgiven when we repent and truly mean it. God is wonderful and will forgive us our transgressions. Amazing.

Captain Edmund Merrick and his wife, Charlisse are quickly separated in this book when the town they are visiting is raided by pirates. Edmund thinks his wife has died in an explosion and is completely devastated. He blames God and turns from Him and starts to turn to his old sinful ways from before he accepted Christ. But God isn't so easily willing to let Edmund turn Him away.

Meanwhile, Charlisse must face that fact that her husband may never find her since he believes her dead. She is in fact imprisoned on a pirate ship along with Lady Isabel Ashton. The two become quick friends in their struggles and make a plan to escape the evil clutches of Captain Carlton. Captain Carlton is infatuated with Isabel and provides her many comforts but he cannot seem to win her affections.

When Charlisse and Isabel are able to escape, they face a reality that life may not be the same as when they were first kidnapped. Charlisse dresses up as a pirate to head into town where she thinks her husband may be. She see's what she thinks is her husband’s deviant new ways and tells herself she no longer needs him. While she is witnessing this in town and bears the heart break, Isabel is once again kidnapped by Captain Carlton. After discovering her friend is missing, Charlisse takes command of her husband’s ship with the help of some of her husband’s loyal friends, who are disappointed to see him turn away from his good ways, and embarks on a mission to rescue her new friend again.

Once Edmund discovers his ship missing, he is determined to find his so-called loyal friends and try to figure out how and why a tiny new pirate could take over his ship. It isn't until he comes upon the ship that he discovers who this new pirate is and why this pirate gives him such a steely look of hatred that makes his stomach do flips. Could it be.......

I'll leave it at that. Very good book!!

An incredible adventure in trusting God.

Captain Edmund Merrick, convinced his pregnant wife, Charlisse, is dead, sails away to drown his sorrows. Having turned his back on God, Edmund reverts to a life of villainy and joins forces with the demented French pirate Collier. When Edmund’s mind clears from its rum-induced haze, will he be able to pull himself up from the depths to which he has sunk?

Believing herself abandoned by her new husband, Charlisse begins to battle her own insecurities, as well as the vengeful pirate Kent who now holds her and the Lady Isabel captive. Will Charlisse lose her love for Edmund as well as the life of her unborn child?

As they battle the tempests that threaten to tear them apart, is there any way Edmund and Charlisse can regain the helm and steer their way back to the haven they both so desperately seek? Or will their love drown in a whirlpool of treachery and deceit?

This is a wonderfully written swashbuckling adventure. At the same time it is an incredibly well written look at how past baggage and methods of dealing with problems can take over again for believers when disaster strikes. The character development is fantastic, not only for the two main characters but also for a fairly large number of secondary ones.

Both Charlisse and Edmund had go-to ways of dealing with problems. As well as thought patterns that had developed before they accepted Christ. When they are torn apart and believe the worst they each revert to their past methods. The battle then becomes one of trying to trust God and believe what they had learned of Him.

I was very annoyed by this book. I didn’t like the time jump at the start and I also didn’t like the inconsistency of how Merrick reacted to Charlisse’s “death”. And then Kent coming back to torment them is so annoying.

The Reliance (Legacy of The King’s Pirates, #2)
By M.L. Tyndall
Published by Barbour

In this second novel in the Legacy of The King’s Pirates trilogy, Charlisse and Merrick are torn apart when a church bombing leads Merrick to believe Charlisee has been killed. Charlisse meanwhile, has been abducted by the menacing Captain Kent Carlton who has also kidnapped the young and beautiful Lady Isabel Ashton.

A tortured and despondent Merrick turns his back on God and reverts to pirating in his quest to revenge Charlisse's death. Joining the cruel Captain Collier, Merrick turns one dark corner after the next as he struggles between the evil trying to overtake him and his shaken faith in a God who allowed his wife to be taken from him.

Strong and courageous Charlisse has her hands full escaping Captain Carlton, commandeering her husbands ship and searching for Merrick in the darkest of places. Yet when Charlisse finally finds Merrick, he is in the arms of another. What ensues is one ferocious battle after another as Charlisse stave's off fearsome pirates, vows to leave her husband and tries to rescue Lady Ashton.

Tyndall’s novels are always fast-paced, riveting and emotionally charged; The Reliance is no exception. Tackling some incredibly difficult but very real scenarios, Tyndall writes with raw honesty and compassion. Overflowing with messages of trust, surrender, hope, faith and forgiveness, I can’t recommend this pirate series more highly.

A swashbuckling tale of pirates, both good and evil. In THE RELIANCE, M.L. Tyndall weaves a masterful tale set in the Caribbean following the lives of Capt. Edmund Merrick and his thought to be dead wife Charlisse. THE RELIANCE picks up where THE REDEMPTION left off. M.L. Tyndall has done a great job capturing both the action and the romance of life on the high seas.

Feeling as if God has turned his back on him, Merrick struggles with the voice of evil inside him, convincing him he must avenge his wife's death. He soon returns to his former life of pirating as a way to gain information regarding the whereabouts of the pirate he holds responsible for taking Charlisse from him. Charlisse on the other hand, is being held captive by both a vile pirate and her thoughts of abandonment. When she hears rumors that Merrick has returned to his former life, she feels as if she has been forgotten by God and her husband.

Action, adventure, and romance, await you in the Legacy of the King's Pirates Series. I have only two regrets. One - The hero and heroine are apart during most of the story. Two - I too am writing a story set around the volatile life and adventures of pirates. Though I wish I had beat Marylu to the punch, I did not allow that to deter me from enjoying her captivating tale.
