In a series of highly erotic and frankly kinky fetishistic illustrations which Moebius had been exorcising from his system, Jodorowski spins the complete tale of Angel Claw, a young woman who undergoes her sexual and spiritual initiation. Already in her name one can sense the impossible marriage of violence and tenderness, of flesh and spirit, of beast and beauty. Moebius' genius is for the first time harnessed to the service of unabashed lust and lasciviousness.
Better known for his surreal films El Topo and The Holy Mountain filmed in the early 1970s, Alejandro Jodorowsky is also an accomplished writer of graphic novels and a psychotherapist. He developed Psychomagic, a combination of psychotherapy and shamanic magic. His fans have included John Lennon and Marilyn Manson.
A very quick read from the master of masturbation (master masturbater? Master Bater?) Jodorowosky... this time offering his hastily scribbled and disappointingly Freudian insights into what he thinks women think about sex, all of which is complemented by unusually sub par drawings by Moebius, but to give Moebius credit he obviously put a lot more effort and time into this what with the date on his signatures ranging between 1992 and 1993. Whereas Jodorowsky wrote this with his shit dick within ten minutes of edging over some Tarot cards. It leaves me wondering if there's some really weird 1990s incels who owned this book so they could jerk off over it whilst feeling like intellectuals.

The simplest way to describe Angel Claw is to call it an anti-plot, stream of consciousness abstraction that uses incest, BDSM, self mutilation and sexual distortion as a path to self exploration.
Yeah, that’s the easiest way to say it...
A young woman begins the story at the funeral for her father and takes a journey (which might only be in her mind) to his empty house and a labyrinth that escalates from invasive to bizarre to transcendent.
It’s definitely NSFW and it probably better understood under the influence of controlled substances, adult beverages or both.
Mystický, sado-masochistický příběh o vykoupení a osvícení (něco jako Příběh O)? Sonda do temného podvědomí pubertální dívky a paralelní svět jejího staršího já, sexuálně zkušené ženy? Oslava a přijetí ženské submisivnosti a exploatace genderových erotických stereotypů?
A rather scenic gutter in which to rest one's mind. The ever prurient Jodorowsky effects Freudian shock & awe with explicit abruptness, straddling the line between unflinching clarity and an altogether abstruse tenor. The art comes without complaint, as expected, with Jean Giraud bringing orificial assistance to the story in classic unearthly fashion. As with many tales of an overtly psychosexual nature, you're left to contemplate its impression with utter duality. Is it a smart, insightful look at the recesses of the id, or something more contrived that becomes lost in itself? The quandary reminds me of how I felt after two things: Watching Nikos Nikolaidis' Singapore Sling, and reading Pierre Louÿs' Pybrac. Regardless of any incongruity, it's worth a read, at the very least for the display of Mœbius at his alien best.
Too abstract that I can't choose whether Jodorowsky was shooting fragmented freudian analysis on a woman's psychosexual journey, or it was merely a fetishistic text whose author is completely honest about its approach. Similar ideas were presented way before in the animated piece Belladonna of Sadness. But at least in that anime you could recognize the message and historical context. It feels like the writer wanted to show us how kinky this book is (or he is? who knows? some might call this the artistic material for incels). Perhaps it was a combination of two sides. Art and pure perversion going hand in hand to convey the fine line between the grotesque/ beauty, pornography/nude, doing a psychoanalysis of female sexaulity/objectifying their body forms in a lacking nuance study of kinks. I think the textual part failed at what it was trying to depict (or perhaps Jodorowsky did it on purpose, making readers question the backbone of this prose). More importantly, the illustration part is not anything more unique or separate, only being a part of the whole thing, regardless of how talented the artist was.
I got this in a humble bundle with a bunch of other Jodorowsky/Moebius stuff and didn't really know what I was going into. The book is a strange erotic tone poem and the artwork is stunning, but the writing is too disjointed and immature to really accomplish anything and honestly drags the book down more than if it had just been the pictures and you tried to guess the plotline yourself. Maybe some of it is because Poetry doesn't always translate smoothly, but the writing is too blunt and immature to match the sensual atmosphere the images seemed to want to convey, and that's a shame because the opening lines were intriguing enough that I was expecting something interesting, but it's just too scattershot and silly to mean anything deep.
If you read The Incal, and felt that you'd really like the somewhat awkward sexy bits expanded to a whole book, then boy are you in luck. Here the same team, Jodorowsky and Moebius, create a surrealist sex odyssey which, for all its transformations and morphing identities, never quite convinces as anything other than two pervy old men working out some issues. Even if you can get past that, and began with the assumption that Moebius draws most things beautifully so his take on beautiful naked people should be worth seeing, then unless you have some very specific kinks you'll probably still get distracted by the ubiquitous flying penis tadpole creatures.
I barely understood any of this and felt the graphic nature of the illustrations were more than necessary to get the point across. Nevertheless, Moebius' art is still stunning, regardless of the subject matter. I will confess I did not know what I was getting myself into with this, and I expect at least a bit of sexual content with these two, so that in itself wasn't the issue.
Just no. This is awful. I have no issue with sexual content, but this puerile, oedipal, misogynistic pile of intellectual masturbation is just flat up crap.
I can see this triggering a lot of people, especially women that have been assaulted by family members.
The art is sublime, ethereal and I found myself wanting to print several just to pin up on my wall. They're that good.
The writing, however is... More like a series of poetry that link with each other to make a disjointed melody of incest, rape, revenge, becoming a woman, lust, desire, hate... It is almost like a drug fuelled ramble of either a madman or a supremely insightful discourse in the usage of words and imagery to evoke emotional responses.
I am currently studying at art school and this very much feels like what the teachers keep pushing us to do, exit our comfort zones and experiment. The whole story is an experiment. (The art is not an experiment, mind you, but the subject of the art could be argued to be so.)
I will be pondering this one for a while. I gave it 3/5 only because it's difficult to rate it 1.5 when the art is just so exquisite and parts of the fragments deserve a 4/5. So halfway is a neutral answer to this fantastical dreamscape.
A psychosexual and transgressive gutter. Perhaps even a trough. It's akin to the Story of O, but as a illustrated novel/poetry. It's an attempt to intellectualize the erotic, an even more risque version of Lost Girls.
This is excellently drawn by Moebius with some stream of consciousness from Jodorowsky who is clearly trying to work out/work through some desires and issues. It's got incest, BDSM, Freudian imagery, sexual liberation, enslavement AND empowerment, and of course it's a spiritual initiation (its JODOROWSKY).
