Gigant feels like a re-hash of Gantz, but with much poorer character development.

It's still entertaining, but without some additions soon, I fear it may become boring.

Damn. File this one under “books that would never get published in America.” It’s like if 9/11 and Godzilla were mixed with a wet dream. Not even joking.

4/5 It's so sad that these volumes are over so quickly but I guess it's to be expected with Oku's art. So many excellent panels and 1/4th the book has to be double page panels.

Story-wise it's more of the same. A giant robot is voted in and then 3 more giant god's of destruction. Japan has no choice but to release Chiho to take them on. So much carnage and chaos. Oku can really make you see what hell on earth would be like. He can make you understand just how awful and actual StayPuft Marshmallow Man would be if it was seriously trying to kill everyone.

Chiho and some jets on the cover of volume 4.

Hiroya Oku is back at it again with another absurd manga in the same vein as Gantz and Inuyashiki. And he’s even weirder than ever. Not quite as dark, gory or emotional as his other two major series, but it definitely has the same genre-bending creativity, insane plot and bizarre characters that defy all expected literary tropes.

Gigant is a science-fiction romance featuring a size-shifting pornstar as the hero, her dorky hypersensitive boyfriend that wants to be a professional film director and a whole slew of whacky hijinks from aliens invasions, evil internet entities and Godzilla-style Kaiju battles that end in countless deaths. Trust me, it gets even weirder than it sounds. It’s straight up stupid at many points, but always highly entertaining and fascinatingly weird. Bizzaro fiction enthusiasts will find a lot to love here.

Overall, I just really liked Papico as a protagonist. Hiroya Oku is great at making unconventional protagonists extremely likable and interesting. Inuyashiki features an old dying grandpa that turns into a cyborg superhero. Gantz features a dead teenage boy forced to fight aliens in the afterlife while wearing a dark skinsuit that gives him superhuman abilities.

And now in Gigant, we get a beautiful pornstar with a sad backstory and a surprisingly bright personality that humanizes her rather than treats her like a sexual object. There’s a lot of nudity in almost every chapter, but it never really feels like fanservice. It just feels like a strong woman that’s perfectly comfortable with her body and she’s always fighting on behalf of others. How many other series out there have a kickass pornstar that beats the crap out of giant evil aliens in the nude without a care in the world?

As weird and dumb as this series could be, I had fun reading it and enjoyed experiencing the story of yet another unconventional protagonist by Oku.

Does anyone else think Rei's mother is hotter than Chiho? That shot of her from behind is truly a work of art. The story seems to have disolved into featuring little more than rampaging giants. Tokyo is hit by more and more destructive giant entities, with no end - or originality - for the attacks in sight. At least we see more of Chiho swinging her... assets some more. Of course, I'm referring to punches and kicks. Why? What were you thinking about?

4/10

Plot-wise, this is very much more of the same, but in a way that actually improves the series: This volume focuses on the human part of the equation - the people who want to see the disasters, the people who are affected by them, the government that is almost always wrong and too slow...

There are weaker parts, and I don't really care for how the author writes the main character, Rei, but at least the human part of the plot is, in general, what I would expect on a situation like that.

More of the same here, down to how Chiho eliminates one of the kaiju attacking Tokyo. The way people are reacting to the mass destruction is truly mind-boggling. At one point a character literally makes a comment about how she can’t get groceries if the situation isn’t under control, and the situation is that giant monsters are rampaging across Tokyo.

When not just one, but THREE shinigami come down from the heavens and start smiting Tokyo, it's up to the Japan Self-Defense Force to stop them... but will they be able to?!

Of course they won't. So, they grant Chiho Amnesty in the nick of time to wage war on the strange enemies. It's one adult video actress against three angels of death...!

It always feels like the author is trying to fill space with these, like a student trying to reach a word count on his essay. But at least this one had some exciting action bits. I’m gonna have to continue this at manga cafes, it’s too fast of a read to keep buying.

Overall the series (& artwork) is a 5 star show but this volume acts as a bridge between plot points and does little to add to what has already been established.

Very classic Oku, creating such an unbelievable threat n finding some thin margin for the mcs to prevail. Still a lot of tiddy tho 😐
