Enemy forces have unleashed an EMP over the heartland of America, causing the power grid, transportation, and communications to fail.
Meanwhile, Houston, Texas, has been hit by a monster hurricane.
Amid the devastation, the battle for survival continues.
In the aftermath of the storm, reality sets in for Will Fontenot. Life as he knew it is over. He’s battered and bruised from his previous battles but more determined than ever to escape Houston. There’s no other choice. Houston is a powered keg ready to blow, and it’s only a matter of time before the city falls.
When Will, Cayden, and Isabella are again drawn back into the enemy’s plan for the nation’s final destruction, they’ll have to once again fight for their lives against seemingly insurmountable odds.
Meanwhile, Will’s sister, Savanah, must pull her community together to defeat the trouble lurking in her neighborhood. She’ll be tested in ways she never dreamed possible in her fight to keep her children safe.
First, there were some writing/editing issues (ex. "Which now, with Jason, there were more of.") and when Will is trying to find a bike in the apartment complex, Gus tells him one is in apt 242. A few pages later Will asks again and Gus tells him it is in 350, but that is where they are going to confront the persons who may have murdered Kevin. The US military seems to have been caught off-guard and struggling to respond to this massive attack on the U.S. since there are not many trying to fight back in Houston and they have to rely on civilians to help (in addition to holding a minor hostage). Even though the civilians are willing to fight, the military guys hesitate to give them any weapons. Stephens is maddeningly single-minded and her tunnel vision almost gets everyone killed. Even after Will is coerced to help her with the promise of the return of his son and a trip to his sister's farm, they just drop him off at Isabella's apartment and he doesn't complain? I guess that is OK, though since Will has a tendency to lurch from fight to fight and struggles to keep on target with his own objectives. Isabella is already suffering from infection from an injury on day one, sustains a large leg injury while fighting and says nothing because she wants to get away from the military guys (who have a doctor). These characters have some appealing qualities, but common sense is not one of them.
No Other Choice is the second instalment in the Fall Of Houston series. I really enjoyed reading the first book, No Way Out, but I have to say I enjoyed this one even more. It’s full of tension and action along the way with characters that have real heart and life to them. TL Payne does her usual excellent job with the writing keeping it simple and flowing leaving the reader to enjoy the story. As it’s part of a series you’d definitely benefit from having read book one but you could start here if you really wanted but you’d be missing out on a lot. There are some parts that reference the previous book but they are easy to follow. In short you can by why would you!? This is a great read for all apocalypse fiction fans.
TL Payne rivets readers once again with the second novel in the Fall of Houston series- No Other Choice.
Once again we pick up with Will, Isabella and his son as they navigate the city of Houston post hurricane and EMP. Riddled with devastation they are forced to fight back as they struggle to leave the city.
You must read book one in this series to really understand the hell, trauma and frustration these characters have had as the fight against time. Payne creates action, emotion and unique challenges that will engage you cover to cover. Will and Isabella's slow burn of attraction is a light in an otherwise dim world.
The stars are mostly because I know this author normally is very good, one of the best disaster-story-writers!! However in this book there are so many different inconsistencies and even one paragraph that is speaking about this guy getting injured and in the middle of the paragraph he changes names?? What is that, how do you miss these things?! I've never seen such a editorial gone haywire... It is not just a tiny spelling mistake it's several times over. Sorry darlings...
No Other Choice by T.L. Payne is the second book in the Fall of Houston five book series. I have a hard time reviewing this type of series by each book, so I'm talking about them all as a unit. This series could have benefited from some heavy editing. I think cutting it down to two (or possibly three) books would've been an improvement. A lot of the action in this story gets repetitive. People get into trouble, then fight their way out again and again. I got tired of the main character constantly saying all he wanted to do was protect his boy. I also thought the politics of the situation were a bit simplistic. Communist countries don't cooperate with each other just because they're communist. Unless I was a true blue fan of this genre, I'd skip it.
The author really did a great job with this story! I really appreciate that the book didn't start off constantly replaying what happened in the last book, it just jumps right back into all the action. I am completely attached to the characters and everything happening in the book. I will definitely be reading other books by this author. Took away one star for the foul language.
As usual, I couldn't put this book down. It kept you on the edge of your seat. The characters seemed so real. You keep wanting to turn the page to make sure that everything works out for them. I loved how it seems like this story is going to merge with the group in Evening Shade!
What more can you say? It’s hell Houston! The shooting, the looting, the insurgents attacking the military facility. Will and Isabella have taken a crash course in warfare and all away from it bruised, burned and cut but they’re alive and moving on. Great action in this story! Honestly, I could hardly stop reading wanting to know what was going to happen a next!
When the hurricane beats down and it could try to find some place to hide and get involved with the military and the surgeons tack in them. Be in from Houston I could follow everything that they want through and have replaced that they went in my mind. What a fun read
TL Payne has seriously outdone himself with this series! So much more than just a post-EMP apocalyptic series. The added complications resulting from a physical attack in conjunction with the EMP creates a whole new level of mayhem. I can't recommend this series highly enough. Consider it a must read for the apocalyptic technothriller enthusiast! 5/5!
A continuation of the story where a man tries to get his son and their new companion to safety after a hurricane and an EMP wreaks havoc on Houston, TX. It's fine. Tons of action (shootouts) and not much gore. It reads more like the action scenes in a political thriller more than a survival/post-apocalyptic thriller. I'll keep going with the series.
This series is really good! I love how Payne can make you feel like you’re there going through it all, and boy do Will, Cayden and Isabella go through a lot!! Will sister, Savannah is dealing with trouble but not quite as extreme.
I’m looking forward to book three in this Fall of Houston series!!
TLPayne does it again, another page turning series of books, the fall of Huston. Meet Will, Cayden, and Isobelle caught up in a hurricane, espionage, an EMP, and a near full out war on insurgents.
They go to Isabelle apartment and things grow from there. Still a prisoner in Houston. Meantime his sister and her family face their own problems. Looking forward to book 3.
Much better editing in book 2 along with an exciting, well told tale. Can’t wait to read “No Turning Back! Some of the places with cursing almost seem contrived, like the author doesn’t speak that way either.
Oh, my. Talk about exciting non stop action. I can't imagine going through all the insanity these characters are going through. I can't wait to read the next one in this series. I am so glad I found this series on Kindle Unlimited. Happy ☺reading 📚!
It was an action packed read with bodies being killed by everyone and noting who are the good guys. They still have not left Houston but still trying to get transportation. Loved the book.
This was a fast pace action filled storyline. It had all the elements that we have come to expect from this author. I recommend that if you have not read any books by this author that you get her books and leave your reviews.
This continues with Will and his sons nightmare. They learn not oy is the Hurricane hitting, but China launched a EMP on them. Kim, the head injury person, takes them to her FBI contact. Read their adventure while they deal with the Hurricane.
I am enjoying this series so much! The different take on a dystopian story is great. Emp and a hurricane all on the same day... Makes for a lot of action and drama. A definite recommend!
So much going on in this book and in this series! Who exactly are the bad guys? Would one of our own REALLY be in cahoots with the enemy just to gain power? Who can we trust? This is fast paced and full of what could happen if an EMP is released on our country.
From cover to cover this is another great read! Action filled and several twists will keep you wanting more. I am anxious for book 3 and Highly recommend.
Love this author. The stories are scary but realistic considering the days we are living through. Hurricane and EMP at the same time. Not to mention insurgents.
