Oh, man, the weight on Asirpa’s shoulders just continues to get heavier. And Tsurumi is laying it on thick. It’s hard to judge what is the right answer, who should get the gold, because it is not a black or white situation.
The entire “interrogation” sequence was incredibly chilling. Tsurumi’s quietly unhinged demeanor colors everything with a degree of unpredictability. Super well done with the tension there!!
Satoru Noda has a real talent for messing with your emotions. Just when you think you’ve figured out who to trust or root for, he throws everything into question. We’ve known for a while that there’s so much we don’t fully understand about Asirpa’s father, Wilk. But it’s easy to overlook how little we actually know about Tsurumi too. What’s driving him? What’s his real goal? Up until now, we’ve only had hints, but the new revelations in this volume completely shook my perspective. Honestly, I don’t even know who I’m rooting for anymore.
What keeps this volume engaging is the way it blends heavy, emotional themes with just the right amount of comic relief. I had a good laugh on some moments which gave a nice breather from all that intensity.
With only a few volumes left, Noda is clearly building toward something big, and I can’t wait to see how it all comes together.
EH, PERDONA?!??!?
VAMOOOOOOS
The Seventh Division have Asirpa and Sugimoto is hellbent on getting her back which somehow turns into The Fast and the Furious: Sapporo Drift as they race a beer truck through the streets.
But this leads to a direct confrontation between Lieutenant Tsurumi, Asirpa, and Sofia (with Koito and Tsukishima eavesdropping while Sugimoto tries to find them) and damn, this series gets dark as the truth of what happened finally comes to light and multiple story threads finally connect. Like I said in my review of volume 1: "Gold always seems to be a catalyst for murder."
This comic includes a high octane horse/car chase every bit as good as Raiders of the Lost Ark, an incredible examination of personal and revolutionary politics, nation building and cultural preservation and tactics and beliefs and all that good shit, and finally one of the best sight gags in manga history.
Golden Kamuy is probably the best manga series of all time.
It's defintiely getting towards the end! Lots of revelations in this volume that of course leaves us with another cliffhanger. LT Tsurumi seems to have much more intelligence on Wilks and other major Ainu characters. Can't wait for the next volume. A shame the English translations take much longer when I know the series is already finished in Japan since July!
We finally get a peek behind Tsurumi's mask and it's so worth waiting for. Revelations to long-held mysteries, good action, at least one laugh out loud scene and a secret shared that is changing everything... This was almost a perfect volume except how it means I have to wait for months to read the rest. Argh
