Miranda has blackballed Andy as a journalist, but not as a writer. Andy takes a pen name and becomes a famous writer of children/pre-teen novels that later is made into a movie series
Miranda blacklisted Andy from being a journalist after events in Paris. Leaving NY, Andy still found a way to succeed in writing when 4 years later, she becomes a popular author of fantasy/YA fiction under the pen name Kenzie Mitchell. The MCs of her books are twins going on magical adventures, which she based on Caroline and Cassidy, who she grew close to while working for Miranda. She sent the first two copies of her book to the twins when she first got published, and they ended up being a fan of hers without knowing her real identity. When Andy was offered a movie deal for her book series, she didn't expect it would reunite her with Miranda and the twins for the latter were invited to audition for the movie.
Before going to CA to assist in the casting and production of the film, Andy stumbled upon an eight-year old girl who appeared on her porch one night. The kid wouldn't talk at first, but after some TLC, Andy gains her trust and found her name is Hayden. After learning Hayden's story, who turns out to be an orphan and whose last adoptive parents didn't do a good job of taking care of her—IDK, the kid's background is vague—Andy decides to adopt Hayden and bring her to CA with her.
The premise for this story was good, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. We're left to deal with lots of dubious moments, like Hayden being responsible for inviting Caroline and Cassidy to audition for the movie, with the assistance of Kaydence—Andy's cousin/agent. You see, Kaydence knew the books were based on Caroline and Cassidy and that Andy worked to keep Mitchell's identity hidden from Miranda. Yet Kaydence still appeared surprised when the twins turned up for the audition with Miranda in tow.
Aside from questionable events, Hayden bounces from talking like a kid one moment and then like an adult the next. Andy and Miranda are kind of OOC here too. You got Andy channeling her "Miranda voice" whenever she's on work mode, and honestly, to me it was carried out in poor taste despite being intentional. It wasn't done like in other fics I've read where Andy just puts down her foot to show assertiveness and never raises her voice to deliver an irrefutable message like Miranda. Here, she COPIES Miranda every single time whenever she's talking to others during work, including Miranda's "That's all." It bordered on being pretentious and felt nothing like when others attempted to do this in their fics. It was overdone here.
Moreover, Andy and Miranda didn't broach the subject of the blacklisting when they finally started talking. Their interactions weren't written meaningfully, but somehow the kids perceived they were "in love," and right out of nowhere Miranda's kissing Andy! Ugh.
I couldn't go on with reading after that. Buildup is a huge thing for me, so when it's nonexistent or badly executed, the whole story flunks and unlikely to recover my interest.
