At 680 pages, this book features over 3,000 quotations and 250 authors — organized alphabetically with more than 400 subject headings. It is a treasure-trove of wonderful words, sure to challenge, encourage, and inspire.
Housed in a beautiful hardcover, this book will hold together with frequent use. Preachers and writers will want to visit this book for each sermon or article, sure to find a word for the occasion. An index of topics at the back of the book will help you find everything from “affections” to “zeal.” You can also incorporate readings into your family worship, or as an inspiring part of your devotional quiet time.
Memorable, Quotable, and Striking
As I prepared a sermon on 2 Timothy 4, I found great encouragement from the section on Preaching. “Consider your own insufficiency and weakness together wiht the weight of the work. Who is sufficient for these things? Which if you do, you will not dare study without prayer nor yet pray without study, when God allows you time for both. It is a weighty work to bring sinners to Christ.” Thomas Boston, Art of Man-Fishing, page 92.
What I found to be drawn to were the shorter, simple quotes. “Envy is a denial of providence.” Stephen Charnock, Horn, Puritan Remembrancer, 93. Memorable, quotable, and striking.
