“Succesful training is teamwork!” - Simone Mueller

Why did I read this book?
Because Simone Mueller captivated me with her “Hunting Together” book last year, and I still have not recovered from it.

What does this book do?
Recall. Rocket recall. That is not an understatement. The book starts off with a short recap of what a recall is, and why it’s an eternal pain for many pet parents. And I get it. Oh my. But if you feel the struggle, do not despair, because this book is here for you. It’s divided into 4 parts which makes it really easy to follow. First you’ll get a solid list of stuff needed to prepare (spoiler: it’s not much, it’s not expensive, and you probably already have most of it) to make sure you’re comfortable before you’re presented with the foundation part of your new, shiny Rocket Recall in part two.
The last two parts are recall game protocols. Part 3 is foundation games, while part 4 is go-pro games for more advanced training. All protocols are simple, easy to follow and most importantly, they are fun. As a super neat bonus, The book comes with a complete set of logging sheets to help you get going. You can either copy them from the book, or download them via the provided link at the back of the book. In short, this book is everything you need if you struggle with recall. If you don’t struggle with recall, it’s still worth a peek though, because the recall games are really good fun. I am familiar with most of them and Akira will testify to them being so very entertaining.

What does this book not do?
Well, anything but recall. You get what is advertised, and I do believe that is enough. It also doesn’t put you through a straining reading exercise, as the book in total is less than 100 pages. So you’re easily just a daily commute away from your new, shiny Rocket Recall!

Where do I get this book?

You can really measure the skill of a trainer when they’re able to distill such complex techniques down into simple steps. Really a master of the craft.

I admit I’m embarrassed at how long it took me to read this one because once I sat down with it, it’s all I wanted to read and I’m sad I’ve finished it. I recommended it to my library to purchase as it’s a nice and simple read for anyone wanting to teach or struggling with recall.

I adore how simple it was to read. Sometimes you just want a step by step breakdown with incremental difficulty increase and problem troubleshooting and that’s what this book is. With little homework and printouts to get you thinking about your dog’s preferences!

I like how it broke down recall into the check-in phase and then the movement stage and why it’s important to proof both. I especially liked the Anchor cue and the tidbits on how to capture your dog’s speed with it to speed them up! I appreciate the inclusion that recalls do tend to be inherently aversive and how we can reduce this.

And all the different ways to reward your dog to match their desires that isn’t boring “insert food from hand into mouth”.

Having gundogs I did like the gundog inspired exercise and am ashamed I’ve been under-using my pouch-retrieve. So much potential with this training toy that has been neglected! It also gave me ideas for what I can use my bolting rabbit training toy for when proofing recalls.

And now I’m thinking I’ll buy the lead walking and food avoidance books by the author, despite not needing them, for the little snippets and tricks no doubt in it and just being a nice read. Plus it’s nice to have a full set.
