Vallinayagam Olaganathan Chidambaram Pillai தமிழ்: வ.உ. சிதம்பரப்பிள்ளை (5 September 1872 - 18 November 1936) was an Indian freedom fighter, lawyer, businessman and politician. He founded the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company in 1906 to compete against the monopoly of the British India Steam Navigation Company (BISNC). He launched the first indigenous Indian shipping service between Tuticorin in British India and Colombo in Ceylon. Once a member of the Indian National Congress, he was later charged with sedition by the British government and sentenced to life imprisonment, and his barrister license was revoked. He is known by the epithet Kappalottiya Tamizhan ("Tamil helmsman"). Tuticorin Port Trust, one of India's thirteen major ports, is named after him.

VOC's jail time and the subsequent dissolution of Swadeshi Shipping Co. brought out Bharathi fiery side

“சிதம்பரம், மானம் பெரிது! மானம் பெரிது! ஒருசில ஓட்டைக் காசுகளுக்காக எதிரியிடமே அக்கப்பலை விற்றுவிட்டார்களே, பாவிகள். அதைவிட அதைச் சுக்கல் சுக்கலாக நொறுக்கி வங்காளக் குடாக்கடலில் மிதக்க விட்டாலாவது என் மனம் ஆறுமே! இந்தச் சில காசுகள் போய்விட்டாலா தமிழ்நாடு அழிந்துவிடும்? பேடிகள்!” [மானம் பெரிது, பெரிது மானம்!]

VOC's last interactions, along with "Kullasamiyar", as well as a brief touch on Bharathi's opium abuse opened a new perspective for me:

மாலை சுமார் 3 மணிக்கு அவர்களிருவரும் பேயிரைச்சலிட்டு வார்த்தையாடிக்கொண்டிருப்பதைக் கேட்டு நான் விழித்துக்கொண்டேன். ஒரு சிறு 'அமிருதாஞ்சன்' டப்பாவிலிருந்து ஏதோ ஒரு லேகியத்தை எடுத்து ஆளுக்கு ஒரு எலுமிச்சங்காய் அளவு வாயில் போட்டுக்கொண்டனர். அவர்கள் கொம்மாளம் அதிகமாயிற்று. அறிவின் சிகரமான மாமாவுக்கு இந்த மக்கினிடத்தில் எவ்வாறு பற்று உண்டாயிற்று என்று அதிசயித்தேன். [மாமாவின் மாற்றம்; சாமியாரின் தோற்றம்]

This book was an eye opener for me, perhaps setting stage for reading more detailed biographies of Bharathi as well as understanding his state when he penned down the various memorable verses.

Wonderful read!

A short book about the relation between Bharathiar and V.O.C. Though the book was written on more than 70 years ago, still it's a wonderful and easy read. From that we can know about pre-independent India situations and many freedom fighters.

Into some lesser known sides of Bharathi

Authentic historic account - especially about Surat Congress which resulted in breaking up moderates & extremists in pre-Gandhian era. Also snapshots about Bharathi's later period habits.

No frills writing gives an authentic air and interesting read.
